I own a Belgian Auto-5 that was built in 1928 and it's fantastic. It has damn near 100% of it's original finish and it functions flawlessly. Honestly one of my favorites.
@@yvettecorral9932 I've had luck cycling all sorts of ammo through the ol' Auto-5, from cheap-o Walmart birdshot to high brass 00-buck and slugs. The secret is to use white lithium grease on the mag tube/friction ring. Works like a charm.
@yvette corral there are springs that wear out. You only need one or two drops under the brass friction ring for proper operation. If your springs are worn out it will affect your cycling. Since it sounds like this is a new problem make sure it’s lubed properly and also check your rings. You may have switched to lighter loads and the rings may be set up for heavy loads.
Classic guns. I have a Remington 11 that's nearly identical, down to the Cutts compensator. I love it. Unfortunately, the Remingtons don't have the manual magazine cutoff. Apparently, this was Browning's favorite design. The guy who dreamed up the 1911, the Hi-Power, the Winchester 1895, the BAR, etc. Loved his auto shotgun the most!
Fabulous camera work! Photos were well presented , different views made for an excellent video - the best I have seen withthe Auto 5!.. Lovely vintage gun too , cannot be beat.
I have a Light Twelve Auto 5 made in 1924 inherit from my grandfather. His brother brought her from USA where he was living to my grandfather in Portugal in 1965. When I got it, despite not having rust, it was very worn, so I sent it to a gunsmith for restoration. I have other newer and more modern shotguns but Browning's quality remains far superior, that shotgun will outlive me. On a side note I live 30 minutes away from Browning Viana factory...
Being mostly familiar with the 1960s FN Auto 5 magnum 12 that my grandfather left me (was his goose gun), it's interesting to see the differences. I actually was previously not aware that the speed load feature was a later addition.
As someone who doesn't like guns but would like to own a couple just to take them apart and learn the mechanics. This has to be one of those. It's classy and it's fast. It's an amazing piece of (well lost the word) machinery.
1. R u pushing that bolt release button w ur LH thumb while loading the 4 rounds at 0:7 to 5:32? 2. I thought u kant load from the bottom port unless u open the ejector port 1st?
@@blackegret666 sadly not yet, with this whole covid thing going on, we dont have much freedom here in Spain... even open field gun ranges are closed... smh
Yeah. Auto-5s made before the 1950s were made with a single piece lifter that can only be loaded by pressing down the bolt release. The "Speed Load", two piece lifter wasn't offered until late 1953
Awesome demonstration! I noticed that the barrel did a double tap when it slid into battery on one of your slow motion shots and I'm curious if it does that on every shot or were you shooting high powered shells on the low powered setting or if it was because of the weight of the suppressor on the barrel? It's got me wondering!
I am not quite sure on the double tap even though I own multiple of these guns and it licensed copies, however that is not a suppressor but a Cutts Compensator, essentially a muzzle break and adjustable choke system that was extremely popular on guns like this before the advent of removeable chokes. I would assume the double tap is because the barrel uses a recoil spring in the forearm to slow it down reducing recoil and also returning it to battery but that is my best guess.
I just bought a Auto 5 made in 1911. Noticing your thumb-do you have to keep your finger pressed on the button to be able to unlock the loading gate? I know you press it to release the slide, but do you also have to press it to be able to load in the tube?
Yup, the Auto-5 has a single piece lifter that must be depressed when loading in order to allow the lifter to be moved to load the magazine up until 1953 when Val Browning introduced the two piece lifter that allows for auto loading
Hello! I don't know if you are going to reply to this but I recently bought an Auto-5 with a cutts comp on it. My first gun! I was wondering what your friction ring set up is? Thank you!
Congrats on a fine firearm! I recommend to put the friction rings on the tightest setting and work your way down if you have problems. Mine are on the tightest setting and I didn't have to make any changes after, but every gun is different. Happy shooting!
Looks just like my 1959 vintage Light 12, Cutts anx all. ////the big advantage of the Cutts is to reduce muzzle rise and allow faster follow-ups, especially on skeet doubles.
This is the best showcase of an Auto-5, and especially of a non-split lifter variant on the whole of UA-cam. I own two 16 gauge ones, made in 1929 and 1924
Because this gun was made in 1949, four years before the two piece lifter that allows auto loading was invented (1953). Coincidentally, the two piece lifter for the Auto5 was invented by Val Browning, JMB's son.
What type of ammo do you recommend for mine A5 I've had some trouble as of late with cycling loads and this has never happened before mine is a old passdown pre FN but not one of the more expensive ones I was told but I love it all the same. But even after cleaning It was still having issues
Did you lightly oil/grease the outside of the magazine tube? Also, did you check your friction ring set up? It's possible it got put back together and configured for heavier loads.
That is such an awkward loading technique Edit: just bought one and realized why you loaded it like that since the bolt release has to be pressed to unlock the loading gate 💀
I have this exact shotgun, didn't like the big "pickle" on the end, had my gunsmith friend remove it, 20" barrel....WOWZER, what a home defense shotgun!
This shotgun was made a few years (1949) before the two piece lifter was invented (1953). The two piece lifter, coincidentally, was invented by Val Browning, John Browning's son.

Great demo of the old A5. Yes, i like the option of shooting as a single shot gun or repeater even w the magazine full. In this way, u can hold the #8 shot shells in the mgzne and quickly load a one round of #00 buck shot for a wild big boar charging at u. Ahhhg, mebe u should just shoot it w five #9 pellet shells? Make up ur mind slowly and enjoy watching its razor sharp tetanus tusks sharpening themselves. Ur in shock-denial anyway. I like this older version of A5 better than the current Browning one. The older ones have their bbl itself recoil back, just like the modern cannons do. But the newer A5s they call it Kinematic operation, the bbl doesn't retract into the rcvr. Instead, the bolt retracts back. Just the shmall bolt vs. the entire heavier 28" bbl taking taking the recoil, u kan imagine which one will hurt ur shoulder? The gas powered automatic will dirty up ur gun's mech. but who cares if u just own a plastic gun. Don't buy these classic metal guns of old grandpas

Clean ,simple , straightforward and entertaining. Thanks for putting this together. Love it
For anyone who believe the Cutts compensator reduces recoil, keep in mind that if the recoil on this gun was reduced, the gun would not function.
This is my dream gun. Lol. I love those slow motion shots. It cycles perfectly.

Why do you put first round in the chamber? You speed load Brownings....all from the bottom. Only shotguns that you can do that with.
