- I only want to say, if there is a way
Take this cup away from me
For I don't want to taste its poison
Feel it burn me, I have changed
I'm not as sure, as when we started
Then, I was inspired, now, I'm sad and tired
Listen, surely I've exceeded expectations
Tried for three years, seems like thirty
Could you ask as much from any other man?
But if I die, see the saga
Through and do the things you ask of me
Let them hate me, hit me, hurt me, nail me to their tree
I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God
I'd want to know, I'd want to know, my God
Want to see, I'd want to see, my God
Want to see, I'd want to see, my God, why I should die?
Would I be more noticed than I ever was before?
Would the things I've said and done matter any more?
I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord
Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord
Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord
Have to see, I'd have to see, my Lord
If I die what will be my reward?
If I die what will be my reward?
Have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord
I'd have to know, I'd have to know, my Lord
Why should I die? Oh, why should I die?
Can you show me now that I would not be killed in vain?
Show me just a little of your omnipresent brain
Show me there's a reason for you're wanting me to die
You're far to keen and where and how but not so hot on why
Alright, I'll die, just watch me die, see how I die
Then I was inspired, now, I'm sad and tired
After all, I've tried for three years, seems like ninety
Why then am I scared to finish what I started?
What you started, I didn't start it
God, Thy will is hard but you hold every card
I will drink your cup of poison
Nail me to your cross and break me
Bleed me, beat me, kill me
Take me, now, before I change my mind
Incredible! Michael Crawford has one of the most powerful voices I have ever heard. He is just amazing.
Michael Crawford lives rent free in my head
I made a sandwich, ate the sandwich, and passed the sandwich and he was still holding that note
Best homage to Michael EVER. LOL Brilliant!
Yes... it's part of his magic :)
I was in the audience. It was AMAZING!
LOL!!!!
I'm not surprised
The way he holds the note... simply breathtaking!
+omegaxmen ''without his eyeballs popping or his trousers falling down.'' lol he said that in one of his performances
Agreed. You can hear him take a gulping breath right before he hits that note but it has and will always send shivers down my spine whenever I hear it
Enough to curl your toes!!!
I actually prefer a pure , "classical" sound like Michael's in this piece because I think it provides a good contrast to the heavy, "hard rock" orchestration.
As great as his voice is. As clean and concise. It lacks real emotion. Any that he produces sounds completely manufactured. Ian Gillan captured all of that. The quiet, low volume precision. The starving, questioning,, pleading, hurting and accepting emotions are all there. None coerced. None artificial sounding. Great ability doesn’t make a song sound better. Not in the slightest. Ian Gillan might have an easier time sounding like Michael than Michael would trying to sound like Ian. It’s called a rock-opera for a reason. Now, remember, I’m not making any slights on Michael’s amazing vocal ability. I just don’t believe he fits this role as well as others did and would. Or, I’m an idiot.
I love Michael Crawford.. Always have, always will..
No one sings this song like Michael Crawford. It knocks me off
I have always loved Crawford. In my eyes he will always be the best Phantom there ever was and will be. He is an exceptional singer, and I am glad he shares it with the rest of the world.
ME TOO I am so depressed...please reply
His version of Panis Angelicus is really nice too, if you wanted to give it a listen.
Notice toward the end he moves his hands the same way he does in 'Phantom'.
The hard rock high pitched notes aren't here but matters not since his interpretation is remarkable
I love to hear MC sing, he always puts his heart and soul into every song and Gethsemane is no exception, it is breathtaking, so beautiful, thank you Michael x
A great man................a all round entertainer. Theatre legend, Actor and stuntman. This is the best version of Gethsemane. A great guy and living Legend. I even named my daughter Jessica after his on-screen daughter.......love you Micheal, would love to meet him,,,,,,,,,,
David Scarrott I have had the pleasure to have met Michael a few times and he is a truly beautiful and awesome person to talk with.
Michael is The Real Phantom of the opera his powerfull voice is amazing ♥
I can listen to this song all day
He is so brilliant.
When Crawford sings he tells of places he's been. As magical as his voice is, as developed as his technique, I could even watch him perform without sound, his eyes startle me sometimes they betray so much emotion.
+bendabledoll It *is* rather startling how such a gentle man as Michael Crawford seems in real life can be so ferocious onstage!
bendabledoll Best version.
I remember this first being shown and can’t believe I’ve managed to see it again. This was The Royal Variety Performance. Prince Charles and Princess Diana were present. She actually chose Michael Crawford and also chose her favourite song by him, Gethsemane. He was poorly at the time and nearly didn’t make it. Throat issues. But he did and this was the result. He had some time from performing after this to rest his voice. The advice he was given before the performance. 10/10 for this and thanks for posting. 🥇👊🏼
I actually like it better when they just hold the note or just sing it through in a rock tone. I hate the falsetto notes in this song it never fits. This was amazing
That note hold! Goosebumps down to my ankles!
No one, absolutely NO ONE ELSE sings this song as dynamically moving, as emotionally far-reaching as the incredibly talented Michael Crawford: one of God's true vocal gifts to this world. My soul, mind, and spirit sour whenever he sings anything from the musical genius duo: Andrew Lloyd Webber & Tim Rice. And this version is LIVE!
I agree. Every other singer seems to be thinking "How high can I hit my notes?" or "How much like a heavy metal singer can I sound like?" Crawford seems to be the only one who said "Wait a moment, this is a song about an internal struggle about approaching death - let me SING it like that!"
Exactly! He FEELS that which he sings, every time, and then he sings it like no other ever could. Thanks for sharing that with me, Henry! I've been a Michael Crawford fan forever and so long! ^_^
Been a longtime Crawford fan myself, and yes you're absolutely right about him feeling that which he sings. I recall hearing once that he had a problem crying during the song he sang for "Once Upon a Forest" because he knew it was an old man singing about a young child's possible death.
And I realized shortly after I posted my response that I forgot someone else who did a good job with this song: Colm Wilkinson (famous as Jean Valjean in the original broadway version of Les Miserables). There's a UA-cam video of him performing it, and he does as excellent a job with it as Crawford does, in my personal opinion.
Yes! Colm Wilkinson! The first time I ever heard that magnificent Irish Tenor was in the lead role of Jekyll / Hyde. I fell in love with him right then & there. When people compare those 2 incredible voices: Michael Crawford, and Colm Wilkinson...I groan inwardly. It's a case of apples & oranges. Why can't I love both equally? And, as far as I'm concerned, the greatest female voice of today is Susan Boyle's. No other woman has her vocal range and multiple music moods. And I love the greats: Aretha Franklin to Whitney Houston. But for me...Linda Eder, Charlotte Church, and Aretha Franklin - all equally alongside the "late-bloomer": Susan Boyle.
But again...just my opinion. Those who give me goosebumps and cause my eyes to well with tears...I'm a sucker for a soulful voice - male or female.
Thanks for the back-&-forth here. I appreciate those who appreciate those with ethereal voices: those gifted songsters. Wow!
Karen Bibbo-Lord soar not sour
Stunning performance of this song. Michael is the best no doubt!
Michael is a true artist.... He sings with such a passion. love him!
The best part of the song is the scream and he doesn't do it...
My thoughts too.
I have always admire Michael Crawford multifaceted gifts, singing, acting, entertaining people .
Michael Crawford... a PHENOMENAL singer and a stellar actor. One of my favorite Broadway actors of all time... and I think that from a concert setting, he nails this song, although it is taken out of its rock opera setting. I can't see Crawford doing this anywhere but at a concert because he's an operatic singer, not a rock singer.
More melodic than Ted Neeley, but so suggestive though. Great. Great!
OMG! What an outstanding performance; absolutely breathtaking!!
This makes me cry every time. The voice and emotion cannot be duplicated. Definition of superstar
He is
I like Steve Balsamos version of Gethsemane more. I´ve been wondering why he never made it as a household name, he´s just so good.
Question of taste, I guess :)
(And I like the screaming too!)
Another great Andrew Lloyd Webber song sung beautifully by michael
Love this version Best !
Michael Crawford is the main vocalist I grew up on, and love how he sings all his songs.
fabulous!!!!! a great trained voice. no strain, etc...
I saw Michael perform this at Radio City and he knocked it out of the park. Amazing words, lyrics and voice!
The song is in itself awesome and helped me to understand a lot about the probable feelings that would go through such a persons mind given this outcome.
The song is presented magnificently by Michael Crawford.
my god this is perfect..
This was truly out standing. I just became a fan for life
one of my favorite versions of this song. Tears every single time I hear it.
That one note brings this performance up to the level of Ted and Ian...incredible.
AMAZING!!! all i can say oh and WOW...
I am terrible all I hear is the phantom singing as Jesus
Why so few views? I have seen this many times. One of the best vocal performances I have heard EVER, of any song, by any artist. Michael pours every emotion through his voice. Simply staggeringly beautiful.
+Bonnie Anne Pinard It's a beautiful song but I didn't find anything special about this particular version. The guy doesn't even hit the high note. Seems sore lacking without it.
The guy? Have u seen the Phantom of the Opera? This GUY is a legend!
Bonnie and Rynji - nailed it (no pun intended). Love Michael and yes this GUY is a legend.
Bonnie, original video had more views, but now i can't find it. Guess, already deleted. Fortunately, i had reuploaded this video long time ago.
Crawford has a great voice no doubt, but not great for this song...check out original by Ian Gillian. So great
Michael Crawford is truly a great performer! Love the album!
Michael Crawford has been well trained in how to use his voice 👏 3:08
Apparently most of you are not used to hearing a trained. Broadway singer. Stop watching American Idol and other such ilk!
Ben Forster is a West end performer.
*****
A stage actor.
He doesn't even hit the high notes tho like he skips it
That's hysterical, so are you saying if you wanna hit Gethsemane correctly, don't receive the training this guy had.
Gethsemane has a G5, he doesn't hit it, plain and simple.
LOL hah!! so you're saying you wouldn't take MC's talent as your own?
I remember watching this the first time round, having heard him sing Music of The Might and The Phantom of The Opera, this just blew me away. Those of us that grew up watching him as Frank Spencer, who'd have thought he could sing like that - he's just an amazing talent.
I only wish I could watch this without crying!
My absolute favorite version of this song. Michael Crawford respects the music, he doesn’t let his ego lead him. He works with the music, he doesn’t use it as a platform to stand upon. You can hear it in every note. That’s why he will always be the best Phantom ❤️

Whilst he lacks the Rock and roll, high pitched elements of other "Jesus" performers - still vocally great and a long, long way from Frank spencer.......
The most amazing version of this song.
Sing My ANGEL OF MUSIC!
that was first thought after clicking play :D
Crawford is good, I’ll give him that, but where is the blues in his voice? This is a song that is pure rock and roll, it was meant for a voice like Robert Plant. Crawford has the emotion, but damnit, where the hell is the “WHHHHHHHHHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?” cry? Seriously man, John Legend does it better than this guy, and his voice cracked during the performance. All I’m saying is that Gethsemane isn’t a song that’s meant to be sung by the Phantom of the Opera. It’s made for a growling tenor, not a dramatic tenor. I mean, I realize how a song can be sung differently, but literally, Jesus Christ!
Mind-blowing!
Happy 73rd birthday, Michael Crawford!
I felt chills on that long 25 second high note. Magnificent!!!
I was wondering how long he held that note, like the one he did at the end of "Music Of The Night". I've never timed it, but dang, that's a long breath to sustain a high note!
Sorry...NO...I love him as the Phantom...But this is not his song...Only 2 can dp it...and that are Ian Gillan and Ted Neely....Prefere Gillan
I have always admire Michael Crawford multifaceted gifts, singing, acting, entertaining people .
Fantastic Michael Crawford 👏 especially that note for 16 beats...wow.. wow..😲
This brings back such memories for me...my nan loved Michael Crawford, and had a tape of his songs, including this, Phantom, and many others. Whenever I'd go to my nan's unit as a child, she'd put it on. This reminds me so much of her.
Ted Neeley he certainly is not.
pobrejesus1 Thank God for that! Bravo Michael!
I love Michael Crawford (his voice is musical theater and classical awesomeness) but the lack of, high kickass, rock n' roll, Zeppelin-esque vocals makes this rendition feel flat and lacking. Ted fucking Neely is the Jesus this musical needs and deserves.
Also remember, Michael is not a young singer. His vocal style as a mature performer isn't going to be the High G of Ted Neeley.
He did abundantly beautiful for his audience.
it's so weird hearing him sing this song good job Mr. Crawford!!!! :)
Simply breathtaking. One of the greatest performances of any song that I've ever heard. Hard to believe he's Cornelius Hackle from Hello, Dolly. lol.
The Best
has anyone seen him perform this song on that concert with Dale Kristien? the speech he makes after he sings cracks me up every time!
This is pure blasphemy! It's a pity such a great singer took these words on his lips. Jesus said, 'Not my will but yours be done.....' The 'cup' was the suffering in gethsemane - something which we can never fathom. Jesus NEVER shrank from the cross. That was why He came - to bear your sin and mine and die in our place so that we could be reconciled to God. He laid down His life and He took it again. He was victorious over satan, sin and the grave and lives to be the Saviour of all who trust Him.
this isn't presented as fact
Calm down. It’s just an reimagining of the story. It’s not presented as biblical lol
The best! John Legend can’t hold a candle to this. Period.
I do have to admit, John Legend had his own equally bone chilling version, but I’d have Michael Crawford’s version at the top, and then John Legend’s version a close second. 🙂
I agree john legend can not hold a candle to Michael Crawford Performance of Gethsemane john legend was an awful Jesus
He has a beautiful & pure voice. Didn't realize he was "Frank" on Some Mothers do have em... my favorite show when I lived in England in the 70's. Very talented - funny and a great singer!
OVER THE MOON IS MICHAEL CRAWFORD….!!!!
one t of the best getsemane sobngs ever song betty i did it again :)
Saw him at Royal Albert Hall some years ago. Amazing!! Think I counted 42 seconds on that long note that night. Got his autograph next day at a book signing where he signed my programme. Great man, great singer. So happy I actually got to meet him in person.
beautiful
Now I need a Ramin Karimloo version
I am terrible all I hear is the phantom singing as Jesus
While this version was beautiful and appropriate for a concert setting, Jesus Christ Superstar is a *rock* opera. It's important to suit the genre of the show. This version lacked a lot of emotion and grunginess. I mean, in this song, Jesus is having doubts about not only himself and his fate, but even God's power and omnipresence.
I wouldn't sing Phantom of the Opera like a pop star. JCS shouldn't be sung from a Classic Broadway standpoint. It misses so much of the message, character, and "oomph", despite its beauty.
Check Ben Forster's version if you want more rock.
Yes! He made a great Jesus. Not my favorite, but no doubt, a wonderful interpretation. TheMsiaddict
How about Hugh Panaro? We are talking about Jesuses turn Phantoms now. Isn't it weird?
ForeverMusicAlways Wrong. This like any other can bee performed in a different manner. Not all can appreciate diversity.
This was a newly arranged version for The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber tour that Michael initially starred in. But it became so well known that it is the basis of most professional versions of Jesus Christ Superstar these days.
There's no denying that this is a truly great performance, however, I am still disappointed with the lack of the note
Me too, but I think it opens up the song to a new interpretation. Ted Neely's Jesus is just straight confused and POed and needs to be convinced he's doing the right thing which is fun.Crawford's Jesus has more or less excepted his fate is just straight terrified, and needs to be given some motivation.
Surely you mean "accepted" not excepted?
……met Mr Crawford several times’, in my capacity of President of his Fan Club, in my State. Lovely man, perfect gentleman, & very funny to be in conversation with. His singing, imho, is superb. This song is very difficult to sing, & he nailed it! Thank you for your fabulous career, kind Sir………
Great singer
E oído muchas versiones, pero como la de CAMILO SESTO ninguna!!!👏
When I first saw this performance, I did not like it at all. But now I realized how great Michael Crawford was. He made the song his. I now love it!
For all those commenting he wasn't singing it as a rock song- so what? Songs can be sung many ways and this version is beautiful.
MAGNIFICENT !!!! DEC 24/2020
His voice IS the 1980's to me, and his performance of this song is definitive in a music theater sense.
I've seen probably 50 people perform this, live and on video. He's the only one who nails the dramatic change from "Far too keen on where and how, but not so hot on why" to "Alright, I'll die." The entire arch of the song (and show, IMHO) depends on nailing that shift in Jesus' psyche. It happens in a moment but we need to see it in their body, their energy, their voice. Almost every time I've seen this the actor misses it, which is disappointing direction. Michael nails it here.
@@williampacholski8398 Michael does indeed, but have you seen Glenn Carter perform it? Carter also nails the transition. /watch?v=Itz-wqxjlak&ab_channel=Gethsemane-IOnlyWantToSay
wow! didn't know that he could sing that well!!! I loved him as a comedian in "some mothers do ave em" but I'm not laughing now...... great perfomance!!!
WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW. goosebumps. I love you Michael have no idea how your singing touches me. 💞💞💞💞💞
I remember watching at time if broadcast and this is a truly magnificent and emotional performance
Damn....I can't find the words...thank you
Lindsay, why , whyyyyyyyyuhhhhh?
MICHAEL CRAWFORD, THE BEST OF THE WORLD !!!!!! THE MUST BEAUTIFUL "PHANTOM OF THE OPERA"............
Noooo...
The best version right here folks.... until I master it of course.
When a real singer does a rock song...
Fucking hell..OMG...WTF...x 1000000000...Bloody hell...Michael Crawford...wow wow wow...
This performance gives me the chills!
It's really incongruous to me to see this sung by someone wearing a tux. lol
Michael is an incredible performer but this really doesn't work for me. It seems to take him ages to warm up into the character, which I wouldn't expect of a performer of his calibre. He's missing consonants, it sounds lazy and without effort. Like listening to Frank Spencer. Urgh.
When he gets into it he's great, but his version just doesn't do it for me. Sorry. x
Nothing beats this ❤❤❤
Goosebumps...
Simply stunning......pure perfection
Michael has a glorious voice. He was truly blest, and we are also blest that we can listen to such a talented man.
Crawford is a fine singer, but his style is NOT good for Rock Opera. Ohh, he is so awful doing this song. Awful, which is sad to say about such a good entertainer.
he can't sing THIS song
I don't see why but thank you none the less good sir.
Mike England completely agree.
+hugodogobob yes he can!
Mark D Oh... it's you again.....the person
with no taste.
Nice voice and decent interpretation... however, this song is all about the "high pitch". It was written an composed that way. The "cry" is needed. period.
