Now...who said that Western Civilization is dead??? Close your eyes and feel the depth, breadth, and humanity of this work! I can't help but feel the spirit of lieder throughout this work...which is the soul of Schubert!
In my opinion no other composer express sadness as Shubert does in a way that's impossible not to see the beauty in sadness!! This is an amazing performance!!
@@juliekronson9165 You may want to listen to the interpretation by the two brothers Lucas and Arthur Jussen who I believe were her students...equally sublime!
A wonderful Schubert and great performance. Maria Joao Pires touches me in a special way. I saw her first when younger, playing a Mozart concerto. I knew right away this is someone very special. Thank you for posting and making my day better. Lovely music downloaded from Heavens has a great healing effect on our whole being.
What on earth is with all the dislikes???? This performance is incredible!! Are people jealous Pires is mentoring this guy and not them??? The pure sound they make together is wonderful.
Well, I could very well imagine myself as jealous, if I had trained for becoming a consert pianist but not could fulfill my dream. But what about the audience? Why their stiff faces?
they're under the spell of this beautiful but very sad composition performed by a great artist so fragile with her junior and both have this quality not to make faces and contortions as so many do today; pure sobriety in the playing and attitude.
I have not listened to this piece in a while. This performance takes me back to the early seventies when I became acquainted with it via an old vinyl disc. I have it still in my collection squirreled away in my bedroom closet. It always moves me powerfully and the finale makes my flesh tingle from head to toe. It is one of Schubert’s, most profoundly beautiful and spiritual utterances and a zenith of the four hand literature. I hope, one day to hear a live performance! It brings to mind one of my favorite Platonic quotes, “And so we arrive at the result that the pleasure of the intelligent part of the soul is the pleasantest of the three and he of us in whom this is the ruling principle has the pleasantest life.” Though Schubert’s life was outwardly tragic he evidently frequented worlds and realms which are far beyond the masses.
I love her too. She moves me. I saw her when younger playing brilliantly the Mozart piano concerto no.21, also on YT, from 1985. A very intimate video, all close ups of her and about 6 other musicians.
Absolutely love to play this fantasia...and this performance is beyond beauty.... A little bit quicker than I would play it, but it definitely works, especially the fugue! Goose bumps....and that is a very good sign!
It's a wonderful sound, with every balanced note working to enhance the music. Julien's subtle use of the bass provides a warm foundation for the music and he avoids making any metallic or strident sounds during the quieter passages. It's also great to be able to watch performers without being made seasick by excessive, unnecesary, body movement! Just a lovely reading of this piece. Many thanks.
Well, you should take a look at Jörg Demus and Paul Badura-Skoda, two incredible old men, understanding each other out of long practice, playing with earnest devotion to the music, sadly cut short...
Musical performances are not contests (though many these days seem to make them one). Every performer/performance has something special to say. It's important to keep our ears, minds, and hearts open.
@@messrtwinky Sure enough you don't havevto agree but there's a world of difference in liking or disliking it.It means you either don't like Schubert or these wonderful interpreters in which case you don't have any business visiting .By the way:this can hardly cannany better.
On Schuber's anniversary: bravo! Both thumbs up to the composer and the performers! Keep up the good work, and thank you for sharing this beauty. Warm greetings!
Incredibly spectacular. Together they made me laugh & cry therapeutically like never been. Indebted am I to the piece(Shubert) and Maria & Julien's masterful interpretation.
A most riveting performance of possibly the greatest work written for piano four hands. At the outset I am reminded of Barbarina's cavatina in Mozart's "Figaro", towards the end there is a pre-echo of "Libera me" in Verdi's Requiem, so the range of this piece is phenomenal! Very pleased that they use only one piano to preserve the central intimacy, less pleased that the camerman suddenly focuses on audience members scratching their chins or ears
Many shallow people always thank the performers. I have a lot of respect for Ms. Pires for her superb interpretation of Schubert. However people forget to appreciate the true genius of Franz Schubert. Please study his life and his suffering. Then may be you will begin to understand his god given talent only few humans ever had.

Pires plays the melody beautifully, the first three do-do-do should be played differently and she did it right. The most important is that Pires and her student were connected through the whold piece which is actually not an easy one to play.
A warm and heartfelt Schubert of Pire and Libeer! Very touching and those modulations in the work, just great and beautiful. I think a lot of dislikes are for the strange close ups of the audience. For me, that's too much and too closely filmed!

What an honor it is to play with Pires.
The chemistry between the master and the disciple is great. best playing.

In my opinion no other composer express sadness as Shubert does in a way that's impossible not to see the beauty in sadness!! This is an amazing performance!!
How well put, thank you, you added to my understanding of Schubert and his lovely music. And yes, his sadness is so beautiful, profound.
yes you are right!
Maybe because people make a confusion between sadness and melancholy. Melancholy is the pleasure to be sad.
Shubert - the light sadness (as Chopin sometimes) ... the dark sadness - the russian composers without doubt

One of the best of performances of this Schubert Fantasy.
Most beautiful thing that happened to me all day was listening to this!

In unison, they reveal the beauty of this masterwork. It is really hardly achieved. My deep honour to Maria Pires.

It's the hair, stupid. People these days go to see artists play, not to hear them perform.
Well, I could very well imagine myself as jealous, if I had trained for becoming a consert pianist but not could fulfill my dream.

Rosario Monteiro That's rather harsh, isn't it? I gave them thumbs up, but...not everyone has to agree...how boring the world would be...

To die for! Sublime.

What a beautiful performance of this masterpiece. The first Schubert piano piece that I fell in love with. After 44 years I never tire of it.
I love the audience moving their heads to the music
Can I cry with this?? 🥺🥺🥺
Siete bravissimi.....grazie della bellezza dell'interpretazione ❤❤❤

Very beautiful. A lovely passing of the baton in a way. Supreme delicacy matched with power, but not too blazing as Schubert never deals in absolutes.
The maestro will be 70 later this month but, like a fine wine, she improves with age.
