Always happy for a Ilya video but I think there's an opportunity missed for talking about his impeccable timing in receiving the bar and making the most out of the bounce. There are some cleans where he barely gets any height in the pull and still manages to catch the bounce perfectly. He only needs a few centimeters of ROM for it.
From a purely technical perspective, Tian's bar path off the floor is objectively better than Ilya's. Besides that it's mostly individual differences between the two. Ultimately Ilya lifted more sinclair-wise, though sinclair obviously includes the jerk, and also comparing sinclair between eras doesn't make that much sense. Therefore it's pretty hard to say who's a better cleaner and splitting hairs at that point.
@@chrisgeorge84 that’s interesting. I’m not sure what you consider a better bar path, but Ilya’s goes slightly outward then back in, while Tian’s comes immediately inward. The latter is objectively more efficient from a standpoint of force needed to complete the lift.
@@trtnec outward? Are you talking about the bit where the bar slightly rolls forward as Ilya is dropping his hips to pull off the floor? Cuz once the bar is off the floor there is no forward movement for Ilya. Also tian starts near vertical which I think gives the illusion that his bar is coming in more dramatically
I just wish he had no spine injury and go beast mode like in 2014 given that he had no injuries. You can see that even in the jerks he made he was unstable and shaky in his torso area. Also the fact that he got retroactively popped was so shit and imagine how he felt. Giving everything in his life just to get his medal revoked and it is not like everyone else was clean. This sport can be loved and hated at the same time. For me Ilya is the best period. There will be no one like him again. He was and is something special.
It's hilarious listening to people seriously analysing Ilya's body type and technique while at the same time a video clip in the background is playing of him dancing around and generally arsing about while casually pow cleaning 190! 😁
Fear = everything. Fear within his mindset makes him work harder and that much more better. I feel wishing someone good luck isn’t a mind game with Ilyin because the only person he is competing with is with himself.
@J. Luper the way he utilized the clean to jerk transition is actually better than Ilyin. Overall he was a more complete Olympic lifter than Ilyin ever could be. His 200/236 2008 Olympic performance is still superior than any comp Ilyin ever put together.
@J. Luper I know exactly what you mean WH Seb mentioned in a video about Aramnau snatching up to 190kg in training hall 2029 WWC. it's interesting for anyone else reading this comment. In an interview Klokov recalled that after everyone else took their attempts in the snatch Aramnau was still doing his warm up-and-coming for first attempt at 193kg. And it's hilarious everyone knew they would be fighting for 2nd place. It's too bad Aramnau had some problems "off the field" so to speak which ultimately didn't help his injuries which took him out for so long. Could you imagine Aramnau at 2014 Kazakhstan Almaty? Duking it out with the rest of the 105kg class!!!
@haneefm7020 so long story short andrei was beyond over worked and had tons of injuries that were too diabilating from what I recall. So although ilyia took breaks he was still consistent over the years and was unbeaten until 2019 Worlds
Aramnau was stronger and more talented in reality. He’s the most talented weightlifter I’ve ever seen. His masterpiece at Beijing 08 OG is still the biggest weightlifting performance of the 21st century. Unlike Ilyn he was stronger on the snatch and on the jerk. Not just a clean and jerk specialist with a weaker snatch like Ilyn.
He never lost or doubted he will win until he came back from the ban. Here, I am doubting every set. This made me realise I'm missing way too many lifts in training
Missing way to many lifts through doubt maybe because your attempting to many heavy lifts before you have your head around the weight . It’s beating you mentally and then beating you physically . I know when I was missing to many lifts in training it was because I wasn’t spending enough time building up to those lifts and working for long enough at percentages etc .Olympic lifting is a slow journey . If you were bodybuilding then diet and nutrition is a science but with Olympic lifting the science is in the training and how you get to those successful maximum lifts and how you get there on time for competition day .Olympic weightlifting truly is poetry in motion . Enjoy your lifting 😊
3:20-3:24. :The legs of Ilya ilyn going one way whilst the upper body going the other. Naem Sulmanoglu was even more apparent, is it normal or should a lifter be concerned

Doesn’t need to be stated what is a very obvious contributing factor to his clean. My question is though - if he had been taught under a different school of technique so it looked as smooth as someone like Lu or tian tao, while still possessing the same absolute strength…would he be as strong or stronger/deliver a more efficient clean? Mostly bringing it up as he seemed to be changing his snatch during rio prep to make it a smoother, closer lift versus having greater explosive extension / harder contact.
No lol the Chinese have awful technique. The Bulgarians would dust them, and did, because having a long torso is not conducive to max power in the clean.
If Ilya didn’t had that habit of knocking the bar forward during the first pull a la Ivan Chakarov, you can call Ilya’s clean “perfect”. Otherwise, it’s close to perfect as you can get.
as long as media of our sport (and peoples) will glorify guy like him who get banned for doping, this sport will keep dying and have a bad reputation, BTW he lifted 50kg less after his ban in the clean and jerk
Oh, Seb. Say it ain't so! "Begs the question" is not synonymous with "raises the question." To beg the question is to assume a version of the conclusion of an argument as a premise to the argument.
@@spiritinblack370 cuz he's short he's has less distance to drop in the turn over on the clean and snatch as others who are taller. Plus his arms are shorter too so locking out in either lifts are easier as well. Also we don't know how much PEDs he used could be more could be less

I agree. A clean and jerk is nothing like a heavy squat or deadlift. If there is any doubt in the mind, the lift cannot be executed properly.
Oh fuck yeah, an Ilya video I'm in
Just in time for coffee, lads! 🤙

It’s relatively normal for lifters built like that who will favour almost any change in torso angle over just hinging forwards
Tian tao vs Ilya Ilyin? Who's a better clean technician?
Pulling as aggressively and confidently as Ilya did is also aided pretty substantially by roids
Can I use this cleaner for my house?
