  • What appoggio singer feels for the first time?

    When I first truly started to "grasp" support was when one day I had the bright idea that holding your breath super low (without not singing) completely with the diaphragm (absolutely no throat tension/involvement) should in theory be the same concept of support. When an every day person holds their breath, they tighten at the throat to keep back the breath. After awhile of singing while maintaining this "held" position, I really started to find a consistent support. A teaching tool to consider?

    When i first felt what appoggio is like, I was shocked, because I couldn't recognize my own voice. It was weird, it is a very physical stance, it's like the diaphragm is like a valve and it on a whole with your torso makes up a musical instrument whose play is controlled solely by the valve, it is so bloody exhausting.

      Alvin the Chipmunk I had the exact same experience!! It was so bizarre. I have been singing as a soprano my whole life but my “Appoggio zone “ seems to be way lower than I thought.

    this has been a fantastic resource, i have found an openess and after a couple of minutes find that i am wiping sweat from my brow, yet my voice doesnt feel overworked like it used to. I cant wait to expand this into my whole range.

    Why appoggio should be strenuous?
    depends on type of appoggio. Strenuous it is only if one accelerates the proccess(and almost everybody does). It's the law of accoustics and our singing machine coordination. The bigger the sound the more strenth one needs to support it without forsing the throat musles and vocal chords.
    Pre warm-ups are good way to prepare appoggio muscules...

    this change is happening in my technique right now. before i thought that i had somewhat of a right appoggio. but last week it happened that I really could realize, what my teacher told me: to take more time to breath in.
    now its even harder work, but now not only with the stomach- its the back, the pelvis, the stomach (and even the legs, to feel that grounding ;) ) uff!
    hard work. but it feels so good.
    and the sound is much more operatic.
    :)

    @ilmessicano77 Real action is strenthing the diaphragm to ballance air compression, but it feels like pushing down. One has to learn diaphragmical breathing(Natural to newborn babies) and after controlling it like in inhaling. Old masters point out to drinking the sound, which is the same. if you skipped stage number 1, go back to it:).

    @124235346 Good question, but I think I answered that one in my first video(Art of appoggio step by step step 1).
    One can learn the dynamic opposition by singing in the appoggio zone, different vowels, like "EE" and "Ah".
    if you want to keep them ballanced, you need to change, consciously, diaphragmical tension(opposition)
    Understanding this, keeps you working on higher then natural zone notes, by supporting and not placing them

    But it is also true that, no matter how strong you are physically it does not much help during singing, because it feels like its some interior muscles that are really working, like it is in a pit of the stomach or something. Even if you have six pack it would not help you much, its something on deeper level as i feel it. and i dont know why but i feel supporting tension little lower than where diaphragm is.

    @124235346 Those who say that diaphragm cannot be controlled consciously, don't know that control.
    I'd advise you to listen to all previous steps even if you are an advanced student
    1. Natural Resonance zone
    2.Slow development of that zone through support etc...

    Maestro,
    Some teachers said that we have to cough-off after every phrase in order to get rid of the old breath left in the lungs((not exactly a cough but a discrete way to get off the air..), and that it would help to keep the breathing lower in the body and consequently would help the breath support and mainly sing without to force the larynx at all, in fact some use to say that Caruso talked about that in his book about technique. What do you think about that?

  • @TenelliVoiceGuru
    @TenelliVoiceGuru  13 років тому

    @124235346 In warm ups we go up to high A, in sustained note it's a G(passaggio zone) in songs we sing up to F or G tops :)

    Maestro Tenelli, you brought my attention to the appogio technique and i can say, it is the way of singing that just feels right. The voice is balanced and free. What i would like to bring to you is: when im doing metallica vocals, i can jump between distorted voice and clear (exactly one octave higher) by means of appoggio, with no movement of the throat. same with the technique most teachers call 'mixed voice' (exact corespondance in pitch, change in color). Do you have any thoughts on this?

    It's difficult to say without hearing what you do, but those sensations are common

    Thank you so much Mr. Tenelli..
    How can we use appogio technique for contemporary singing styles such as belting?
    I' have been working for two month on appogio breathing and it has been beneficial so far, although I know there's a long way to before I can use it properly..

    It truly is insanely physical... There have been times after long periods of singing I can barely eat from all the soreness in the abdominals. I have however started to somewhat find a way around having too much tightness, though. I have found that if I more imagine the downward support being pulled outward as opposed to pushed outward, I can do it without tightening way too much. Do you think there is much merit to this? I attribute it to the fact that muscles pull/shorten instead of push.

    Thank you again.
    Pardon me in advance, if I'm slow in becoming aware of your response, as UA-cam apparently doesn't provide notification.
    What I don't understand is Why appoggio should be strenuous? It seems to me, one is simply blowing out air, and if strenuous, this suggests one's muscular system wasn't in tone to begin with. In another word, shouldn't there be a preliminary step in toning muscles prior to spending months of even reaching the strenuous awareness?

    Out of all these comments over many lessons on appoggio, no one has actually said what the word appoggio means. And Franco you will know! Appoggiare in Italian is the verb 'to lean', and therefore appoggio is the noun from the verb, so the very word itself gives you the basic technique. It is not a register and so many of you are over complicating the whole thing about pulling muscles, shortening muscles.

    I am feeling all these things he described now for the first time. It is very confusing. Maestro, is it normal for the thoracic cavity, sometimes even the entire torso to shake or tremble at first?

  • @zuraiashvili8106
    @zuraiashvili8106 11 років тому

    I understand what your student is talking about Maestro, i can barely sing for more than 30 mintues now(i can sing for more but i am losing tension in diaphragm and throat gets invovlved), my lower chest and epigastric area feels exhausted. especially high notes are hard. If i try to exclude throat and take all the pressure with the diaphragm, it feels so heavy. Even my back hurts a little, as if i was lifting some heavy weights.

  • @ilmessicano77
    @ilmessicano77 12 років тому

    Mr. Tenelli, when you say to push down on the diaphram when singing high notes, do you mean to push the diaphram with the abdomen muscles or to inhale air?

    @TenelliVoiceGuru Oh ok ty. Franco, another common doubt people have is if they are doing the force in the right way. When experimenting, I can feel tired in the stomach area for so much force, but its useless. I feel like im tensing my abs for nothing, it just creates more tension... I know this is fairly complicated and unknown, but, is really the force similar to going to the bathroom like caruso said?

    So If we're speaking in registers, is Appoggio essentially just Chest voice that is supported exclusively through the diaphragm?

  • @SingLikeLions
    @SingLikeLions 11 років тому

    Maestro tenelli,
    Would you describe this pushing down as if you were going to the bathroom? Or moving a bowel?

  • @SingLikeLions
    @SingLikeLions 11 років тому

    When I do this, I always feel like I am associating this downwards motion like in grunting as if one were to feel this when going to the bathroom. I sometimes feel as if I am providing too much downwards pressure too soon, but still can't find the right ratio. What advice would you have for a young tenor in disassociating this sensation from the throat???

  • @TenelliVoiceGuru

    remember that low abdomenals are supporting muscles, diaphragm is just a great ballancer:if you pushh down too much you will end up singing like constipated person:)
    See someone who can shoe you this live, or come to my studio in Montreal:)

    Maestro Tenelli,
    I've watched all your videos, and I would greatly appreciate if you could reveal to me the technique used by this singer.
    /watch?v=V9FLok3CWnw
    It's Ben Saunders - Use Somebody
    Could you please tell me the technique used by this singer to connect his voice? Is this appoggio? When he sings F#, his voice does not sound the same as the opera singers, but it does not sound like a "placement" voice, there is no change in timbre.
    Gracie,
    Andrea
