Im 50 years old and have had one of these since about 1995 or so and I STILL use it lol It's just so simple. And i only put down basic ideas...almost like a sketchpad to save ideas until i decide to move forward to a serious recording or not.
I had (have? didn't check my garage.) a Porta One. It was (sadly) the last tape machine (of any format.) with real honest to God mechanical VU meters! I seriously miss me some analog freakin' meters!
My first multitracking experience, right here. I saved up over the summer and bought this brand new when I was about 17. I still have some of my dad's old album cassettes that I destroyed by recording over them with my horrible layered guitar riffs. lol
One of my guitar-playing buddies back in the day had what I think was a model a few steps up from this one. It was one where you could record 4 tracks simultaneously. Came in handy for recording various drunken jam sessions, anyway! lol....I wonder what happened to some of those tapes.
I'm a 60 year old man and still have one under my bed. I think it still works. my grandchildren were playing with it for last few years but just recently recovered it from them, I'll have to look into that
that's you playing the Oddity Archive theme song that kicks off most videos. Know how I can tell? Because it's instrumentally related to that iconic smash hit, Burial At Elderbush Gulch!
I remember seeing one of these at a flea market, but it was the one with 8 tracks. Guy wanted $150 for, almost bought it but he had no tapes to test it with. I offered him $100 as-is but he wouldn't budge. I kinda regret not buying it now.
I talked a guy down on a portastudio 424 mk II from 100 to 20 bucks. Just needed a new capstan motor and now it works amazingly. I actually prefer it over the ableton software
It's awesome that your machine is in such good shape. I just did a video with the exact same model, but mine makes quite a lot of hiss, & it's not tape hiss, because it's there even when nothing is playing. Maybe it's the some bad components in the preamps? Curious if you might know. Still records pretty well, though! Anyway, great vid. I'd love to hear more of your cassette recordings! 👍
I just opened mine today. I got it in a lot from a friend many moons ago and NEVER touched it. Don't know if I can figure it out since I'm not into recording.
hey! nice video. So the track you refer in bandcamp is recorded on tape in that porta02? I'm asking because im thinking of buying one for 50€ (i guess thats like 40 dollars or something) to do some tape recordings of my songs, what do you think? also is it difficult to get blank DATs today?
Hello. I’ve just bought one of these but the power in my country is 220V; I know I need a step down transformer to convert it to 110V. I’ve got one but the wattage says 50w and the TASCAM is 12w, so the question is can I run it on this transformer? Many thanks in advance!
Congratulations, good sir. You have won the race to become the first commenter and for that, I applaud you. Good show, Jolly good show! *Claps with enthusiasm*

To be honest I like the music, it is really nice and smooth

Lord I miss my old Tascam Portastudio! I had the Porta 05 and it was such a joy. Thank you for this.
I had this same unit. As I remember, it actually did a good job of reproducing the sound I put into it, and had a pretty clean sounding playback.

That was actually rather nice. Remember that crazy 8-track on cassette Tascam came out with? Talk about nuts.
The tune at the end is really good
Burial at Elderbush Gulch! I was just listening to that before watching this! I love that song! You're a really good musician!
I really like the Minn-Knot album on your bandcamp! :)

I have it's granddad in my cupboard. It needs a lot of TLC. It makes that newer one look almost like a shoebox recorder.

Yeah, you should've gone for the $150, those 8 track machines go for a lot of money now.

You weren't half bad ben! Nicely done.

I'd imagine a simple step-down transformer would work. I don't really have any experience with those though.
OddityArchive thank you
Why did you give up music?
that 4-track is definitely not an "oddity", but i guess you're just staying consistent with the name of your show.
Nice nails.
No, really
The Burial At Elderbush Gulch lol.
