  • The law of Kamma describes how if you perform an action with a good intention in your mind, then, sooner or later you will receive good results.
Richard Jones explains with clarity, this Buddhist doctrine, which is simple to explain in principle but complicated to understand in detail.
This class was recorded live at The London Buddhist Vihara, July 2016.

Thank you for the positive feedback and encouragement Hemingway Hummingbird. As you may know, Richard Jones sadly passed away a year ago. However, I hope you will enjoy exploring the 50+ videos of his classes on this site. There are just a few more Richard Jones dhamma lessons I have not uploaded yet. His last video, about his dhamma journey, if you are interested, is here ...ua-cam.com/video/e2cJKXtJmpU/v-deo.html
Next month, I hope to post an Applied Buddhist Psychology series by Bhante Upananda, one of the monks visiting the London Buddhist Vihara at the moment. With Metta LBV.

Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful talk on Kamma and Vipaka 🙏😊
And a short excerpt from sutta MN19:
_Bhikkhus, whatever a bhikkhu frequently thinks and ponders upon, that will become the inclination of his mind._
    May all beings realize Nibbana

so, do we have people commiting unskilled acts, the consequences of which are simultaneously delivering vipaka to other people?

I know this video is 6 years old but I have a question.
You said wholesome intentions create wholesome outcomes eventually and vice versa. Then why is it that sometimes wholesome intentions create unwholesome outcomes?
Is it based on how egoistic or altruistic an action is?
Let me give an example: A nationalist or a racist wants a good outcome for their group, which seems like a good intention but this often comes at the expense of other groups.
Or vice versa a rich person who gains money by exploiting workers.
In my personal experience I see a lot of people with very good intentions who suffer a lot.

Thanks for an important question Sqweed. I have my views based on my recollections of Richard’s dhamma talks, but I invite any other learned dhamma practitioner here to also respond. In the meantime, I will ask a monk from the London Buddhist Vihara and share the response when I have one.

Racists' racist deed itself isn't good. So it isn't a good intention but a selfish and immoral one.
Well your definition of good intention is weird. Let me give you an example.
Apostacy and blasphemy kills are justified in ☪. Its a good intention (and a good deed) in that society. Do you think its moral and good for majority (i.e 6 billion non believers) ???
      Dude
You have to correct your definition of 'good intention'. 😁

I wonder about stuff like this too. In these cases I wonder is not the intention negated by delusion, hate and/ or ignorance.

I see no list of 10 skillfull actions like the ones you listed in the pali canon text...the 10 wholesome actions are the opposite of the 10 unwholesome...can someone explain this confusion?

    • @LondonBuddhistVideos

Hello Alex - the Saleyyaka Sutta lists ten wholesome and unwholesome conducts: 3 kinds of bodily conduct; 4 kinds of verbal conduct and 3 kinds of mental conduct. para. 7-15. Found here: www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/mn/mn.041.nymo.html
      I hope this is helpful.

Do you really believe that you had a past life. Cause in my view that belief belongs to the mechanics and set up of the body which is your self. When you sleep your not there and thats just sleep, now can you imagine how impossible life after deaths seems?
Also Is there a more in-depth manual for karma so that every time one feels unsure about direction of action, one can recall the steps to clarify those actions? Ie like the five whys.

Hello SZWIFTY MOB. Richard Jones (my dhamma teacher) is not teaching at the moment. However, I will ensure that he is made aware of your comment and I will, if possible, post a reply direct from him as soon as possible.

Szwifty Mob: Do you really believe that you had a past life.
Richard Jones: I do not think it is so much a matter of belief as forming an opinion based upon the facts as we know them.
SM: Cause in my view that belief belongs to the mechanics and set up of the body which is your self. When you sleep your not there and thats just sleep, now can you imagine how impossible life after deaths seems?
RJ: Are you saying that when we are asleep we are not there, which means we must be dead? No. When we sleep we still exist, although there may be no conscious thought process taking place. When the period of sleep comes to an end, the living being is still there. Just because the body dies the mental energy, the thought process continues. Just because an electric light bulb breaks, that does not mean the flow of electricity has stopped.
SM: Also is there a more in-depth manual for karma so that every time one feels unsure about direction of action, one can recall the steps to clarify those actions
RJ: There are plenty of places where the Buddha spells out the likely results of particular actions. However, we can perform so many different actions it is difficult to compile a comprehensive manual which covers every possible action. It is better to remember the general principles which can be applied in all situations. Please remember:
      1. Kamma is generated in the mind, depending on whether our intended action is planned to produce good or bad results.
      2. Wholesome actions will produce wholesome effects. Unwholesome actions will produce unwholesome effects.
      3. Verbal actions are more powerful than thoughts. Bodily actions are more powerful than speech.
