An air filter modification set from Hitchcocks Motorcycles. Frees up rear tool box from air filter and solves the problem of the perishing rubber connector hose.
The small secondary tube that leads into the filter box is the cranckcase ventilation tube. The gases that pass over the piston rings are collected from the cranckcase and fed to the carburetor so that the engine can re-burn them.
I did not wish to revert back to the old perishing rubber hose system so the only hope for the choking-engine was good + substantial air flow, and that could only be achieved with K&N. I now have a K&N with the carb rejetted by the Jets provided by Hitchcocksmotorcycles + genuine replica Goldstar (Goldie). and oh dear, my LTG 535 now roars like a lion and leaps forward like a leopard. Thanks for your patience :)
Sushil K Pingua. Hey man.. i had the old filter box.. now when i changed to the toolbox one. It chokes above 70.. i mean.. i have to wait otherwise it will act like its low on fuel
I did it slightly different. I blocked off the intake from the toolbox filter, i then made a new base for the box from perforated metal and also a plate from the same metal to fit inside the box. Next the centre bolt had more threads cut onto it and a long spring fitted to hold the top plate down onto air fillter gauze which was sandwiched between the 2 bits of perforated metal. That's about it fasten back onto the carb with the rubber tube and Robert is your fathers brother. Dave
Very nice shiny glossy RED Enfield :) I also had the same trouble with my 2002 model RE LTG 535, every year there used be a run to get the rubber-connector-hose replaced, I was fed up with the seemingly foolish set-up of the air-filter in the tool-box by RE. 6months back I replaced the air-filter set-up to retro style as in this video. Thereafter I noticed lack in acceleration and the engine seemed to choke at speeds over 70KMPH. ...contd...
I did this with my 06 AVL electra when I changed the side covers to the early tool boxes,I ran the crank case breather into a reducer and then into the air cleaner, there was also another 12mm hose that I cut short and put a breather on then placed it under the petrol tank,it has been like this for a year now and runs perfect every day.
I then researched and found that there should be a space of minimum 4litres of air between the air-filter and the carburettor, all major motorcycle manufacturers from Yamaha, Honda to Suzuki and even RE provides them; for 250cc and above. I then replaced the stock retro air-filter thrice, checked the electricals, ignition coil to magnet+coil.... contd...
Has anyone used this sort of filter on an EFI engine? Not so much for performance, but to get the tool box back. Australian roads aren't Indian roads, and the air filters can be a little more relaxed.
hi sushil i am thinking to install k&air filter in my bullet its an old model 350cc so which one should i apply and what all alteration will i need to do, i am also planning to install wild bore free flow silencers please reply soon...
I too just replaced the stock filter system with the Hitchcock filter setup, but I was wondering what the small secondary tube that leads into the filter box is. Any idea? And did you reconnect it even though it will now draw unfiltered air? Thanks
Hi again, After re watching the video I realised why Hitchcocks supply the sticker, It covers the bloody awfull quality of the air box they sent you!!! It is covered in dents and waves made even more obvious by the chrome plating. For what they charge i'm sure they can do better than that, or do they blame Indian workmanship? Ride Safe, Dave UK

I did this with mine. Nice conversion!!

Hi Again. If my description is a bit complicated type in, Royal Enfield air box mods, to see the vid I made of the conversion. Cheers Dave
Did you see any changes how the engine run?

does the filter attach at the carby only or is there any other anchor points?
hi i have this box but cant figure out the assembly
what will hold the box in place , just the jubilee clips or something else?????
Did you have to oil the cotton element first?
Good
