@@__7000rpm 100mm is way too tight for street. I prefer to use 30mm for street because it allows me to capture the environment. I mainly use the tokina 100mm for macro, portait or food& product photography
Had this lens for over a year now on my Sony A7III. I would agree that it's one of the sharpest lenses I've used, on par with the zeiss 55mm, which is extremely sharp. I also would say that the colour fringing is probably the worst part about it, though it can be negated by stopping down. The autofocus I find to be extremely good. I did notice the focus taking a long time especially when focusing on macro, but that's understandable when you see just how much the glass needs to move to get to the closest focusing distances. As for eye autofocus for portraits, it works amazingly well. I don't remember ever taking a photo of a person that was not either perfectly focused, or on occasion slightly mis-focused, but still usable. And as long as you use it for a portrait lens it also has very quick focusing. Thus, I definitely recommend this lens, as not only can it be used for macro, but it's also an incredible portrait lens. Just mind that fringing, it's very prominent on the highest aperture. Hope this helps, Cheers.
The first gen EF mount Tokina 100 macro is the 1 lens that I regret buying. I didn't end up loving macro as much as I thought I would, but the deal-breaker was the AF motor. It was SOOOOOO SLOOOOOOWWWWWW. Add the hunting it would do and it was basically useless. Throw in a lot of color fringing and I just stopped using the lens except for the 1 or 2 macro shots I'd do a year. I eventually sold it for the Canon 85mm 1.8 and that lens has never left my side. I use other lenses to get close enough for any near macro shots I'd want now. It's a shame to see that this lens really isn't much different than the old version. I really wish I either got the 85 or saved for something like the Canon 100 L. Oh well, live and learn I guess.

While I am a Canon user and may have to try the EF version, that bokeh really is beautiful. I will give them that! Just shoot at F5.6 :) Color fringing is easy to get rid of in Photoshop anyway. Just duplicate the image, add a blur filter, and switch the blend mode to color. Invert the mask and paint over just the CA for a more precise edit. But you really don't have to worry too much about that unless you're going to print your images.
f/32 is rare with recent new macro lenses. Before with Sony a-mount macro lenses or Nikon F mount macro lenses the f/32 was common but not any more. The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 has minimum f/22 like most other new macro lenses. With macro photography the depth of field is very narrow even with f/16 or f/22. There is the focus stacking post digital method but for me the f/32 is a better old school choice. Of course at f/32 the diffraction is enormous but the results isn't so bad.
Wow what a wonderful performance! Considering it's price it really makes me wonder if it can beat the Minolta 100 f2.8 macro which I remember ken rockwell once said is the sharpest lens he has ever tested,though many new age macro lenses were not made that time. I wish we could see...some of those glorious Minolta lenses being reviewed by you Chris! I do love it how you always put an extra effort testing all lenses on apsc bodies also... The Sigma Macro 105mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM seems to be a good alternative for those who don't have a mirrorless camera, it's an older lens but it's still very popular.
Thank you for the review. That purple fringing was actually quite nice and looked artistic when you captured ink on paper. Because most black inks have a purple tone on paper when you look close enough. I wish they made this for L-Mount, Panasonic S1. Currently looking for some macro lenses for the system and quite liked the photos of Tokina.
That focus motor's noise is adorably similar to a comedy robot arm sound. I'm not hating on it, though. I'm sure that's not a big deal for those who enjoy using it :-)

Can you please so a review on the cannon 90mm ts-e macro adapted onto your a7r2 ive got one that i use everyday for product and I absolutely love it the glass is way bigger than regular macro lenses because you need that room for tilting and shifting. anyone have any experience with this lens on the A7 RIV? The Tokina 80mm 1.8 on my R IV would cause the camera to reboot regularly. No firmware update for it to fix that. Wondering if this macro lens works perfectly with the R IV. thanks

It has that nice push pull AF/MF clutch too (for the odd distance shot); super sharp lens! I'm guessing this is the same optical design in a different body?
Well Tokina's own website lists the same optical formula, so there's a fair chance it might be. I suppose if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Kind of says something that an optical design that old (2006, I think?) works so well on a 42MP camera, though.
I have the old tokina 100mm macro for ef mount. It’s a great lens but the motor sounds the same as this new one and is just as slow to focus. Tokina needs new focusing motors ASAP. Way too slow for any lens in 2020.
Sony 90mm is one of the sharpest lenses in the world. It has its own image stabilization which works along with cameras giving you a tack sharp image. Comparing Tokina, Tamron Sigma, etc is just meaningless.
Which one is sharper, the Tokina, Sigma 70mm f/2.8 DG Macro Art or Laowa 85mm f/5.6? I’m currently shopping for a macro lens for sony FE for close up product photography. Lens length of any where from 50mm to 100mm should work fine for me and though good AF would be nice I would go for a manual lens if it was sharper. The biggest issue for me is price, I need something around $500. Any suggestions?
When testing the sharpness, why do you only show the center of the test map on the largest aperture, and then show all other apertures in the corners? It is the center that is most interesting. And you should get a better test map. When you say it looks sharp, it doesn't look like it. Compare with the picture on the banknote at the beginning which looked much sharper. Test the map you are using does not have enough resolution. It looks like you printed it with a cheap inkjet printer. There must be those of higher quality. It would make your videos more professional. And above all. When you take the center of the picture, show all the apertures, at least some. Just showing up on the biggest aperture and then going straight to the corners is no good. It is usually the center that is most interesting
If I don't go back to looking at the center, that's for a simple reason - it doesn't get any sharper. And FYI, the test chart is an approx 100mp image printed at very high resolution, on a flat sheet of metal, at great expense - it doesn't get any better than that. You need to remember that I'm zooming in quite far to show you the resolution, there.
@@christopherfrost It really doesn't look that way. I have seen numerous tests where the test map looks much sharper. Same with the pictures in the background, they have low contrast and poor sharpness, at least on full HD TV. The photo you took on the banknote looked much sharper
