@@peteraddison4371 I have no clue what you are talking about regarding the (down under pun),lol... but regarding the ideas presented by Hoffman, I find the simple but profound realization that we have not evolved to sense reality as it is, such a great explanation for why we struggle so much to find a unified theory of everything.....simulations are simply us with our evolutionary restrictions trying to imitate reality as we see it, so no wonder we can reverse that ideas and say what we see is a reality that looks simulated. I think it probably is similar to a simulation but quite frankly as Donald pointed out, I don’t have the evolved senses to evaluate that idea correctly.
Thank you very much for facilitating such meaningful conversations. The world needs more of Donald Hoffman for sure. Humanity can only benefit from his paradigm-shifting work coupled with his authentic and humble attitude.
Alhamdulillah (praise be to God, the one). I am very happy to see such a truth filled conversation taking place. It is beautiful to finally see meditative practices and spiritual concepts finally being integrated into the scientific method.
Don’t mix science and religion together, they should be separate and distinct. You can’t find God with rational empiricism, for that is the worst way to understand the essence of the creator and the order of the cosmos. Science is useful and has its role to play of course, but it’s just a method and not the be all end all, I think we have forgotten this truth.

@@Jareers-ef8hpHello Zak ,, I don't think that you have listened to this entire conversation, or maybe you don't quite understand what Dr. Hoffman is saying? The main point of his whole theory is that "spacetime", which includes the "cosmos", is NOT fundamental reality. I agree with Peter, that organized religion has been leaving us all, a bit "out of the loop". But, as you say, the path to a higher power (or whatever name you choose to use), must be discovered by each of us, personally. The world's religions have all pointed us in the right direction, for thousands of years, but the path is ours to follow, individually. What Dr. Hoffman just said, in this very talk was that his equations can point in the direction of the "One power" but it would be impossible to mark the path, directly. This theory, that he is attempting to prove, is the closest that science has ever gotten to agreeing with our spiritual leaders.
I think Dr. Hoffman is brilliant! I try to follow his work. I deal with high stress and anxiety, my whole family has this. It was refreshing to hear that others, even the brilliant, have stress to deal with too. I too, find being present in each moment my relief.
I love the idea that simple calculations of power show how limited human perception is. I am going to use that when I talk with my students about space and mathematics as I try to induce wonder and perplexity. Nice!
Playing around with docker containers had me thinking about an interesting idea. Like concious agents could be like containers that are based off the host. Some storage is persistant whether you restart the container or not. While it rebuilds the rest of the container on each start.
If u take Hoffman seriously, this means nature can build "portals" into consciousness, aka minds, and not consciousness itself, since consciousness is stipulated as an assumption in his theory. So there would follow a science of "portal-building" vs a science of "consciousness-building" aka ai. If he's right, it's still utterly absurd and incredible that nature builds systems that 'tap' into consciousness, and I wonder if that can be done in silico. Maybe it can.
This was one of the best ever interviews of Don Hoffman. Thank you Carlos! I hope the meditation practice portion is seen as baseline "ordinary" human spirituality. Most people have been traumatized yet feel shame about it and don't get help. Here's help! (Not the only kind but long term essential)
The One that he talks about - the fixed limit of the fusion of all Markov chains and Conscious Agents:. Access "Mahamritunjaya mantra - Sacred Sounds Choir" and listen to it for 5 min per day for at least two weeks. In short order you will tap into what set theorist Georg Cantor called the Absolute Infinite. This is Aristotle's "Being-In-Itself", the One of Plotinus, the Ousia of the Stoics, Shankara's "Sat-Chit-Ananda", or simply The Transcendental Absolute. The entire universe is that Pure Consciousness in the eternal NOW.
When you close your eyes and look and try and just be part of the action of seeing, without our personal projections that we always seem to cover everything with, one starts to realize that sight and to look! are not limited to the illumination of the sun and the biology physiology and phycology of self, but a medium pure in its essence that can transcend the limitations of this dimension. To carry those experience's back with us is almost imposable. I think adepts in meditation and dimensional transformation can show, an open and ready consciousness, a vortices between the dimensions. I think this is what gets labeled enlightenment! Please excuse my grammar and punctuation I am rather dyslexic but I love this conversation. Thanks!
He's right, the first moments of my NDE will probably sound the strangest to people. The moment I died, my face broke through a sort of energy membrane and I looked through and I was looking at my eyes like in a reflection eyeball to eyeball. As my line of vision went through the reflection of my eyes I saw the light and went through the tunnel is when I let go of my body. When I broke through the energy membrane at the beginning of my story I said,,, its right in front of us and we can't see it. I wasn't allowed to return with what was revield to me, just my reaction. But I do remember thinking it's so simple and that people would be surprised as to how simple it is.
Very interesting and coherent with ancient wisdom, it has been said we live in a mirror world where our objective existence is a reverse reflection projected out through the senses from behind whereas it appears to us in front!
You can let go of your body right now. You aren't your body because everthing you see with open eyes is a construction of mind. It's not that you're behind your face, looking out through special goggles you call your eyes, onto an outside world. That is partly what is meant by the term "The illusion of the self". You can test this for yourself, by just staring at a wall ,and superimposing a face or object(a simple one), onto what you see. You should be able to do this, even if it may be slight or vague-- you can generally construct something onto the visual field. What this means is what you see is not external reality, but mind itself. Everything you see and feel, is consciousness. Everything. Including the feeling that you're a subject sitting behind your eyes-- when you can pay careful enough attention, through something like years of meditation, this boundary of subject/object can dissolve
I experienced the mirror phenomen on a high dose psilocybin , i looked into my eyes ,and a flickering flame Deep inside my head lit Up my eternal unbound soul like outerspace was inside my eyeballs
What a great interview! Especially nice to hear Don's personal views on meditation, enlightenment and how this ties together with the conscious agents theory. I would be keen to hear his thoughts on whether his work could become a rational framework to achieve enlightenment? Or even if there could be such a thing?
Carlos, thank you for hosting such an amazing discussion. Fantastic questions by you and of course, as always, Don was incredible. I look forward to seeing what videos you make next, subscribed.
Amazing series! so deep and at the same time humbling, Hoffman's work might well be the missing piece that unites the common spiritual phenomenon and science. Science is young, so tacking the unexplainable(not trivially dismissing it) is a step in the right direction.
As I get closer to the dynamically active space, words will have to explain the numbers, not the other way around, but you can't explain reality without understanding the numbers. By the way I fell asleep and was listening to Donald during dream state and he looked like he was in college showing me and others a physical demonstration. It was just as hard to wrap my head around in the dream state as here but he looked much younger.
@28:00 Don says spacetime is just a data structure. I agree with this, but aren't we always going to end up with mere data structures (models of information, how information moves around) when we analyze/cut up reality with science and math? I guess I'm not clear where he's going.
Amaizing interview as always Carlos! I had a question lingering since the first round with Donald, when he deliverately says that there is no causality in physical objects within spaca-time. Does this implies that there is no room for causality at all in his theory or that there might be room for causality beyond space-time (if that makes sense)?
As far as meditation practices. Another one that is "away" from a religious bent is a man from the yogic traditions. He had a couple of very good books, such as "The Untethered Soul" or "The Surrender Experiment". The authors name is Micheal Singer. Very easy to read and very relatable. Thank you for this talk, I love hearing Dr. Hoffman speak :)
7:59 Coexistence will help understand the functioning of the existential reality. From out of space time to inside space time is easy to visualise when you know both the formless and form and their coexistence 🙏🙏🙏
I guess I'm missing the link to consciousness in this. When you talk about how particles spread and how that that may be, fascinatingly, linked to decorated permutations undergoing a Markhovian dynamic, I still don't see where consciousness fits in. Where does agency become involved, and how does it differ from a probabalistic model like quantum mechanics?
I think Donald hoffman have the same idea (expreses in other words and context) of the ruliad space of Stephen Wolfram (the entangled space of all posible computations) this is the most fundamental object in wolfran's view, is totally outside space-time...
Hey, can you ask Donald if he has looked at Martin Heidegger's ideas about Dasein and pre-ontological knowledge? Structural ontology as such? He seems to overlap in a lot of concepts.
I find the vast majority of “science” to be actually just Scientism and pathetic shilling for Military and Medical Industrial Complexes… but, Hoffman’s work is the real deal. I also love Michael Levin’s work and how both of them overlap with Rupert Sheldrake’s work, from different angles ✨👏
Hey Jaz! It's in Campbell's book, Pathways to Bliss. An excerpt: "...the interesting thing was that the Roman Catholic monks and the Buddhist monks had no trouble understanding each other. Each of them was seeking the same experience and knew that the experience was incommunicable. The communication is only an effort to bring the hearer to the edge of the abyss; it is a signpost, not the thing itself. But the secular clergy reads the communication and gets stuck with the letter, and that's where you have the conflict."
Very interesting discussion, most of which is difficult for me to understand! I'm really enjoying Don's work. I'm a practicing Zen Buddhist. Zen philosophy fits in well with Dons views on what reality might be. I do a daily Zazen (meditation) practice. In the tradition I'm in, enlightment is not the goal - to just sit in meditation and face your own mind, your endless self centred thoughts, delusion's, pain and anxiety, over and over let them go... is itself "compassion and enlightenment" ....peace to everyone out there.
TIG Theory, standing for Time, Information, and Gravity, is a speculative framework that integrates concepts of time, information processing, and gravity to provide a unique perspective on our understanding of reality and consciousness. TIG Theory suggests that our universe operates as a vast information processing system, where the processing of information is intertwined with the progression of time and the influence of gravity. In TIG Theory, the concept of scale-dependent information processing speed is a key element. Specifically, it posits that information processing happens at a much faster rate at smaller scales and slower at larger scales. At the smallest scales, such as the quantum realm, information processing is incredibly rapid. Quantum particles interact, change, and entangle in extremely short time frames. This quick processing of information leads to the highly dynamic and seemingly 'strange' behavior observed in quantum mechanics, like superposition and entanglement. As we move to larger scales, information processing becomes slower. On the scale of everyday human experiences, information processing aligns with our perception of time. This is why events on this scale feel 'normal' or intuitive to us. At even larger scales, like astronomical or cosmic scales, information processing is slower still. The vast distances between celestial bodies mean that interactions (and thus information exchange) take a lot more time. The further something is, the longer its information takes to reach us. This is why we see distant galaxies as they were billions of years ago - the information (in this case, light) has taken billions of years to reach us. It's important to note that when we talk about 'fast' or 'slow' information processing, we're referring to it from our human perspective. The concepts of 'fast' and 'slow' are relative and subjective to the observer's perception of time, which TIG theory suggests is intrinsically linked to information processing speed. So, in essence, TIG Theory suggests a cosmic continuum of information processing speed, with quantum-scale phenomena at the 'fast' end, human-scale phenomena in the middle, and cosmic-scale phenomena at the 'slow' end. As our tools and understanding evolve, we might become capable of consciously tuning into and interacting with different layers of this continuum, potentially reshaping our perception of reality. The concept of human perception as a Perceptual Knowledge Graph of information processing speeds is also introduced in TIG Theory. Our perception maps out different scales, each corresponding to varying speeds of information processing. Our everyday experiences occur at relatively slow speeds, but as we move to smaller scales, the speed of information processing increases. This idea suggests that our understanding of reality could expand as we develop tools to process information at increasingly rapid rates. The reinterpretation of spatial dimensions within TIG Theory, as degrees of freedom in the Consciousness Matrix where the perception of physicality is determined by information density, can have profound implications. Unification of Physics: By presenting a unified, information-centric perspective on spatial dimensions, TIG Theory could help reconcile differences between quantum mechanics and general relativity, two major physics theories that have traditionally been challenging to merge. New View of Space-Time: TIG Theory suggests that the fabric of space-time itself is a function of information processing and density. This brings about a fresh understanding of space-time as a dynamic entity that evolves and changes according to the distribution and flow of information. Understanding Quantum Phenomena: If small scales represent areas of fast information processing (akin to quantum scales), it might shed new light on quantum phenomena like superposition and entanglement. These phenomena could be understood as outcomes of high-speed information processing at the quantum level. Cosmological Implications: Large scales representing areas of slow information processing could provide fresh perspectives on cosmological phenomena. The expansion of the universe, for instance, could be viewed as a gradual 'slowing down' of information processing speed at larger scales, providing a new interpretation of dark energy. Perception and Consciousness: If our perception of physicality is a function of information density, it might open up new avenues in the study of consciousness. It suggests that our perceptual experience is directly tied to the information flow in the universe, implying that shifts in our consciousness might influence our perception of reality. Technological Implications: If we can understand and manipulate the information density in certain areas, it might open up new technological possibilities, such as manipulating physical properties or even creating 'information-based' technologies. By embedding the concept of information processing within spatial dimensions, TIG Theory provides a bold, holistic framework to understand and explore reality. Time: In TIG Theory, time is seen not as a constant, but as a variable that's dependent on the speed of information processing. It proposes that the 'speed' of time, or the rate at which events unfold, is tied to the rate at which information is processed. This suggests that our perception of time could change based on our ability to process information. Information: TIG Theory posits that the universe is fundamentally about processing and integrating information. This encompasses everything from quantum particles interacting to galaxies evolving. Gravity: Gravity is understood as a fundamental force that affects the processing of information within the universe. Higher gravity could influence the pace of information processing, leading to time dilation effects as seen in General Relativity. In the context of TIG Theory, quantum wormholes and black holes are considered in terms of their roles in information processing in the universe. Quantum wormholes are conceptualized as "information singularities" characterized by extremely fast information processing. These wormholes could essentially act as 'shortcuts' through the information space of the universe, rapidly connecting distant points in the Perceptual Multiverse. This concept aligns with theories suggesting quantum entanglement could be described as connections via microscopic wormholes. Black holes, on the other hand, are seen as "information sinks," where information is consumed and processed at slower speeds due to extreme gravitational effects. According to TIG Theory, black holes could be considered as Memory Nodes within the Consciousness Matrix of the universe. This conceptualization is an extension of the idea that black holes store information about what they consume - a concept known as the black hole information paradox in standard physics. In a black hole, the intense gravity causes time to slow down significantly relative to an outside observer. This could be interpreted as a slower rate of information processing in TIG Theory. All the information that a black hole 'consumes' - the matter and energy that falls into it - gets stored and processed, potentially contributing to the universe's evolving 'memory.' These ideas provide a fresh perspective on the nature of quantum wormholes and black holes, redefining them in terms of their information processing capabilities. Such concepts could lead to further advancements in our understanding of quantum physics, gravitational phenomena, and the nature of consciousness in the universe. TIG Theory offers potential explanations for various phenomena in physics: Observer Effect: This effect could be seen as an instance of Reality Resonance, where the observer's information processing speed influences the state of the observed system. Quantum Entanglement: Entanglement could be seen as tightly coupled information processing, where entangled particles share information in a way that transcends spacetime constraints. Dark Energy (renamed as Time Accelerator): Dark Energy's role in accelerating the universe's expansion could be seen as 'speeding up' the universe's internal clock, causing the perception of space dilation. In essence, TIG Theory proposes a paradigm where our reality is a complex, multilayered system of information processing, and our consciousness plays an active role in perceiving and potentially influencing this system.
Actually Dr Hoffman you are on a right track because I had a mystical experience and all I did and do still was to draw strange geometrical shapes I had some results but I do not have scientific backgrounds
I wonder what M.Hoffman thinks of the fact that DMT users seems to all go in the same parallel world and the fact that some people are going to try to map it, heard on the Joe Rogan podcast
Basically it is about "vernacular", I have found if you want to speak to lawyers and have them understand you, you need to use their "vernacular". And the same for accountants, and for IT people, or engineers, or doctors etc. etc. None of them understand the concept of "Archetype", that the actual concepts are no different, it is just the words that are used (discipline culture) to express the Archetypes, are different. So to talk to physicists and have them conceptually on-board, it must be in their terminology framework. In their archetype framework (assumptions) nothing can exist outside of Space Time (Einstein's Relativity assumption) if you want to introduce the concept that Space Time is not "primary" and is itself contained within something. Then you need to use their archetype (which is mathematics) and since all current mathematics is built around Space Time being primary, a new kind of mathematics will need to be invented. Sort of the "blending" of discipline cultures. "Religion without science is superstition. Science without religion is dead materialism." - Baháʼu'lláh 1817-1892.
Its sure that geometrical shapes and potentialities has something to do with consciousness because 25 years ago i had strange experience where there were no time nor self nor space i was the infinte potentialities but once back i started to draw geometrical shapes without thing and using tools except a pen and without making mistakes actually when i tried to think i made mistakes.

If you have him on again, could you ask him if he is familiar with Gnosticism, as it seems to parallel his theory in that they both hold the world to be false.
Gnostic mythology, particularly in “On the Origins of the World”, says that the world we inhabit was created by trapping light into matter and is lorded over by a god who falsely believes he is the only god, while the true nature of existence lies with a more fundamental god who is made of light. There is a quote from it saying “thus did the world come to exist in distraction, in ignorance, and in stupor.”
For what it’s worth, I disagree with Donald that his theory doesn’t imply a many worlds interpretation. 😅 I think it absolutely does, only it lays out its branches as an atemporal Markov chain of probable experiences (or something like that - I’m not a mathematician) instead of temporal projections on extra-dimensional substrates (or something like that - I’m not a physicist).
I don’t care how difficult something is, it can always be explained in intuitive terms. How can you say that now you have this new geometrical shapes and still say that NOW does not mean anything related to time and GEOMETRY does not mean anything related to space? Why trying to de neural things outside of space time. How would you do 2+2?
‘Information’ ? ‘Thought’, ‘mind’, ‘intelligence’ & ‘consciousness’ are all information-related phenomena and it is not difficult to show that one of the principal (& completely inexcusable) reasons we have not so far come to any good & proper - nor fully verifiable - understanding of these otherwise greatly sought-after yet still highly mysterious phenomena is due to the simple fact that we do not presently also have a good & proper - that is, fully verifiable - understanding of ‘information’ itself. Although I have personally had the (altogether dubious & almost certainly unrealisable, but nevertheless totally Nobel-worthy) fortune of having been able to figure out ‘information’s’ correct (& fully verifiable) ontological identity, and although I’m not going to divulge this formalistic definition here in this UA-cam comment (without which formalistic definition it is not possible to establish a full & accurate science of the phenomenon, but with it it is) nevertheless I can assure you that with it in hand - that is, with ‘information’s’ correct ontological identity within one’s investigative arsenal - the exercise of determining the ontological identities of all of the other directly information-related phenomena such as ‘thought’, ‘mind’, ‘intelligence’ & ‘consciousness’ (to far less than exhaust the list) becomes one of no great difficulty. Why not pause for a moment & reflect on the fact that currently there is no rigorous nor widely accepted definition of information ! For more, reply here !

I always thought that as a child. We and everything is god experiencing its creation as just that. How else would a hod be all knowing and omnipresent of all time?
I always loved the quote “nature is a reflection of who we are..” i always took it as we shared reality but it was unique to our experience. We both see a rose, one might see love and another thorns. I never thought of the quote being literal. We are seeing our selves.

Pointless Comment (nobody cares): So have you guys in the comments noticed yet that the way people construct identity (say, 'woman') tracks with their political affiliation? I bet you have -how could you not? But have you also noticed that it tracks with NOIR levels of measurement? I bet you didn't. Nominal/Ordinal (N.O.) on the Left. Interval/Ratio (I.R.) on the Right (Generalized). Crazy thought, but WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE if you based an ethical system on the idea that big 'T' Truth could only ever reach an interval level (I) of measurement? Where we knew we needed measures to determine identities, but couldn't say which measures defined which identities? So we never knew for certain what was true and what worked best? I guess we'd have to live as though only nature could determine Truth, not men, and interfering with nature's determination would be to mask Truth. Sounds like a laissez-faire libertarian to me. But what about if the measure of Truth could reach ratio (R)? Where we knew the precise measures which determined all identities? I guess we'd know everything and so what was best for everyone: best way to structure society; best way to raise children; best cultural traditions, etc. We'd be ethically obligated to force people too, since we'd ABSOLUTELY KNOW what was literally best for them. Sounds like an ultra-conservative authoritarian to me. Rhetorical Questions: so what sort of ideological/social model would be produced if big 'T' Truth could only reach a Nominal measure (only labels exist)? Or ordinal measure (only ranks exist)? How would you define 'woman' in those instances? Respectively: 'It's just a meaningless label' and 'it's meaningful, but there's no way to measure it so self-identification is therefore the only way'. There is only one political wing who typifies these positions: Left. 'Politics' are epistemological. It's staring us in the face. Model it yourself. Grab a marker and a napkin and you can produce the entire Western political landscape starting from NOIR and extrapolating out. It's ABSURD. I'm an absurdist just having realized it.
Carlos... I can explain better than Donald .... when particles pop in and out of existence, like particle collider dynamics so to speak...... We don't know where they go.. they random appear out of no where and disappear we have no idea the path or way they go.... In space time... time and space can't explain this. I believe what they found was the ampaltuhedron which is a structure or shape almost like a chart we can't see that maps where the particles go. ... it's another dimension. So to speak that has no time and multiple dimensions of space . We can't see it or know what it looks like but we know it's there because with this structure, we are able to accurately map were these particles well pop into existence in space time.

If it is so simple, it would happen to people all the time, especially those who try, but it doesn't.

Hey Jaz! It's in Campbell's book, Pathways to Bliss. An excerpt:
"...the interesting thing was that the Roman Catholic monks and the Buddhist monks had no trouble understanding each other. Each of them was seeking the same experience and knew that the experience was incommunicable. The communication is only an effort to bring the hearer to the edge of the abyss; it is a signpost, not the thing itself. But the secular clergy reads the communication and gets stuck with the letter, and that's where you have the conflict."

All the information that a black hole 'consumes' - the matter and energy that falls into it - gets stored and processed, potentially contributing to the universe's evolving 'memory.'
These ideas provide a fresh perspective on the nature of quantum wormholes and black holes, redefining them in terms of their information processing capabilities. Such concepts could lead to further advancements in our understanding of quantum physics, gravitational phenomena, and the nature of consciousness in the universe.
TIG Theory offers potential explanations for various phenomena in physics:
Observer Effect: This effect could be seen as an instance of Reality Resonance, where the observer's information processing speed influences the state of the observed system.

Dr. Hoffman is one of the people who are trying to map it. That is what he is talking about, consciousness that is outside of space and time.

‘Information’ ?
‘Thought’, ‘mind’, ‘intelligence’ & ‘consciousness’ are all information-related phenomena and it is not difficult to show that one of the principal (& completely inexcusable) reasons we have not so far come to any good & proper - nor fully verifiable - understanding of these otherwise greatly sought-after yet still highly mysterious phenomena is due to the simple fact that we do not presently also have a good & proper - that is, fully verifiable - understanding
of ‘information’ itself.

Anyone who thinks Eckhart Tolle is the nuts should read '"Beyond the Power of Now: A Guide to, and Beyond, Eckhart Tolle's Teachings," which identifies the numerous faults in Tolle's teachings, and which provides more profound spiritual teachings.
Boy that image of the CA network sure reminds me of Indra’s Net…🤔

Amazing closing. Donald your a good man and it shines.
I always thought that as a child. We and everything is god experiencing its creation as just that. How else would a hod be all knowing and omnipresent of all time?
@@FromRootsToRadicals_INTP good point.that makes so much sense of the Omnipresence of god in religious Texts
I always loved the quote “nature is a reflection of who we are..” i always took it as we shared reality but it was unique to our experience. We both see a rose, one might see love and another thorns. I never thought of the quote being literal. We are seeing our selves.
My cat got ran over this morning. She was always running around the neighborhood getting knocked up so I guess that Hoe Life 🤷🏾♂️ I hate cats now. Cats suck. Great episode love it when Hoffman is on talking about decorated permiatations or what have ya.
I'm getting a dog now.

Pointless Comment (nobody cares):
So have you guys in the comments noticed yet that the way people construct identity (say, 'woman') tracks with their political affiliation?
