How does your light shine? Regardless of religious beliefs, I love the philosophy that WE, as human beings, emit light. The light shines brighter depending on how we interact with others, avoiding trappings that dim your light, such as envy, ego, or fear.
A person’s light shines bright when they treat others with respect, compassion, and kindness. Such was the spiritual philosophy that inspired “Shambala,” a song that became the 8th, Top 5 hit record for Three Dog Night in 1973: Three Dog Night were brilliant interpreters. Cory Wells, Danny Hutton, and Chuck Negron had a unique gift for identifying a diamond in the rough, an obscure song that had either flopped, or was completely passed over, and spin it into gold.
The trio did it over and over during their domination of the pop singles chart from ’69 through ’74 outselling almost every artist in those years including the Beatles. A quick recap…Some of the most successful Three Dog Night adaptations were “One” by Harry Nilsson, who wrote the song shortly after he quit his job as a computer operator at a bank: “Mama Told Me Not to Come” by another relative unknown writer at the time named Randy Newman that was revamped into a #1 single in ’70: Of course, They reimagined folk singer Hoyt Aston’s tune “Joy To the World” and took that to #1 in ’71: And after several others, Three Dog Night did it again in ‘73, with an inspired rendition of Daniel Miller’s composition “Shambala.”
For Daniel Moore, the road to writing “Shambala” began during a phone conversation with his brother, Matthew Moore. Matthew called Daniel to tell him about an interesting revelation that was bestowed upon him in a letter sent to him by a spiritual advisor named Dorothy Beg. In the letter, which was a response to a query that Matthew had sent to the mystic, Dorothy wrote about reincarnation and revealed to Matthew who he had been in his past lives. The letter ended with a cryptic passage…”Let your light shine in the halls of Shambala.” After reading the passage to his brother, Matthew asked incredulously, “Shambala? - Розваги

Wise words indeed!
The harmony of the dog night was amazing and addicting. They deserve their recognition
Three Dog Night deserves to be in the Rock 'n Roll HOF!! 18 Top 20 hits (10 Top 10's) in just 5 years gets you in !!
No question! Thanks for watching!
The RnRHoF is a sham.
Do you recognize artists that don't write or play songs/music?
@@theduel007your ridiculous,Elvis didn’t his own songs, should we count him out too?a lot of great artists don’t write their own songs,a lot of songwriters don’t have the vocal talent like three dog night has,
18???!!! I thought they were a one-hit wonder. Name TWO popular song from Three Dog Night that's not Joy to the World. Just 2! Don't name something unknown and boring like Shambala, or whatever that was that this guy just played."One Is the Loneliest Number" is a popular song, so I guess I know 2 songs. So far, they're 2 Dog Night to me. Can you make it 3?
Who's ever heard of Shamballa? It sounds like hippie music. I've never heard it before today. Three Dog Night probably has never heard it.
Three dog night was my first favourite band . When I was 5 my parents took me to see them (1971). We saw them twice more in their heyday. Talk about a time machine! When I hear them now it still gives me those wonderful feelings I had as a child. Truly magical..
You had cool parents.
Three Dog Night plays, you sing. Not only do you sing, you sing loud and proud.
So true!
Sure do. Black Water is one of my favorite sing along songs.
I was leaving the restaurant and somebody played "An Old Fashioned Love Song" on the jukebox... I was singing all the way to the car out loud!
😮😅
@@gregorykiernan7849 and that song has been running through my head since I read your comment. 😂😂 So I have decided to combat it by taking a drive and playing Mama told me not to Come, because I need a little variety.

Three Dog Night's record of salvaging failed songs is nothing short of incredible.
Three dog night deserves to be in the hall of Fame. I loved Shambala, one, Mama told me not to come and others.
The HoF is a joke. When Tupac makes it in before The Moody Blues or Yes, and Jethro Tull still isn't in there, then the selection process is arbitrary and ridiculous.
@@fmmaj9noname332 Yep, just follow the money... It has NOTHING to do with talent or innovative, cultural changing music and production.

I disagree. We are the good ones. We out number the bad.
If we all typed a song on the internet all over the world, all at the same time, we can evolve the entire planet.
Like a giant fireside Kumbaya moment… Shambala moment. 😊
I love that you recall singing Shambala with your dad! My son is a special needs person, lives with pain from his diasabilities, in his 30s. We have been singing along to Shambala since he was a child. I give him his wooden spoon microphone and he lets his light shine and he brings joy to the world around him. ❤
That blessed me too❤
Wish there was more people just like that of your son.Sunshine generating people are pretty Great!l🎉😊...Blessings!

You get to be his Dad!..and that right there is the best and...special part!🌞
I have 2 sons and have always sang with the radio in the car. One my sons has a hard time staying in tune though. I had him sing with me to songs on the computer and would do so reluctantly. I told him to let it out. He'd say he couldn't sing. I told him then , and still tell him to this day , God loves variety and he wants to hear everyone's voice. So let it out !
Ah, memories. Casey Kasem's American Top 40 once offered up trivia about the oldest songs to hit the countdown.
The oldest lyrics were from "By the rivers of Babylon" by Boney M.
The oldest to hit #1? "Turn, turn, turn" by the Byrds.
Both sets of lyrics came from the bible. Credited to Kings David and Solomon, father and son.
I remember that!
I said the same thing.
I even thought it was maybe Bob Marley’s version of the stone that the builders refuse shall be a head cornerstone.
I knew Rivers of Babylon was an older song.
Three Dog Night holds a special place in my heart even beyond the music. When my youngest son was 10, I won tickets to a TDN concert. I didn't know who to bring with? My wife didn't really want to go. So I brought my youngest son to his first ROCK concert. He has been all in ever since. We have been to 100's on concerts since and currently have tickets to 4 shows in the next couple months. Who know Three Dog Night could change family dynamics in 1 night!!
The chorus melody of My Maria is one of the most beautiful tunes in pop music.
Three Dog Night has always been a favorite, R.I.P. Cory Wells.
Shambala is one of those songs that take me back to a precise moment in time, back in the summer of '73. Up at the lake with my cousins. In my mind I can see the radio plugged into the power pole in the yard.
That's the magic.A 50 year old song you haven't heard in 20 comes on, a you flash right back towhat that song reminds you of. A you know the lyrics.
For me, 10cc’s “I’m not In Love” does the same thing. Every summer my dad would put up our old canvas tent in the backyard for a week or 2 so us kids could “ camp out”. Whenever I hear that song I am transported to that place back in summer of ‘75, camping out with friends watching the fireflies swarm in our backyard. I can even smell the sweet wonderful aroma of the canvas. What a time that was!
The song was used appropriately in an episode of the TV series Lost. It kicked in on the tape deck of an old VW bus as it rolled down a hill.
I grew up in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles. In 1969 I was a Senior in High School and at an after school dance, Three Dog Night made one of their first appearances just as their album debuted. This was nothing new for our school as we had several odd but very interesting visitors during my time at that school. But this was one of the most memorable because the music was so inspiring and fresh sounding. The next day I bought their album and played the grooves off of it.
As soon as you said "enchanted land", i sang "On the road to Shambala". Happiness. All this is is happiness.
Saw TDN in 2001 in 1500-seat casino auditorium. It was one of the best shows I've ever been to. They still had it.
Saw Three Dog Night at Six Flags Great Adventure in NJ in 1976. It was an outdoor venue, and as it was part of an amusement park, half the people there, especially the teens, had no idea who these guys were, and didn’t know what to expect. The other half, including my friends and I were big fans. They put on an awesome show, and as we sang along to all the songs and were up and having a great time, you could feel the rest of the audience, who didn’t know them, start to groove and realize how good they were. By the end of the show everyone was up and singing and dancing along. It was so cool to see and feel the change in the audience. And of course they killed it with Eli’s coming and Joy to the world.
Joy To The World is the 1st song I can recall hearing as a child of about 5 years old
Coolest band ever with the most amazing harmonies, love Three Dog Night !
I'm one of the people that can't resist singing along. My late husband always did, too-we were just a couple of old people cruising in our Jeep and singing along. 😊
Ah! Thanks for sharing!
I hope you are still singing along! Your dear husband would want you to continue enjoying the music the way you both did when you were together. ❤
The best part of cruising!
Three Dog Night is infinitely sing-along-able!! (Is that a thing??) LOL!! 😁🥰
You have to sing along to this song!
No one could turn an aspiring songwriter into a hit machine like Three Dog Night.
No kidding. They did it OVER and OVER!
They did a killer cover of Paul Rodgers and Kossoff's song Woman, originally by Free!
Every song is catchy and memorable.
Simply one of the best groups of all time.
No question!
If it isn't, it damn well should be!!!!! Yet ANOTHER "I don't always listen to this song, but when I do, so do my neighbors!!" song for me!!!!!
EXACTLY!
Love it!
Haha, I love it!
😂
That's great! 👏
I was a teenager when this came out still love singing this in my 60 plus years was glad to hear the bands history.
Put them in the Hall of Fame! Now!
Amen! Love 3DN!
It will never happen. Ahmet Ertegun got an attitude when TDN refused to sign with his label and swore they would never be in HIS R&R HOF.
@@lockedonlaw Unfortunately that's true. However they told Foreigner NEVER too...So!
Never say never!😎
@@ProfessorofRockexactly. I think they're finally being inducted because they're retiring. Maybe this comes at a good time for them: better to go out on top with this kind of honor than to receive it posthumously and not enjoy it.
So happy to see BW Stevenson get some attention. I lived in Austin in the1970s and BW was well loved.
Very cool!
He was a hometown hero to us Dallas youngsters back then. RIP, BW. 🥲
I was there, too! Jerry Jeff Walker, Doug Sahm, Willie Nelson, Armadillo World Headquarters, Hippie Hollow. Legendary time... unfortunately, long gone.
He got screwed by his own label.
BW Stevenson a genius.
My parents adore Three Dog Night, it's one of their "together" bands, and in my youth their songs filled the house on bright weekend days.
Cory Wells was always a close second to Paul Rodgers as a singer to me. Three Dog Night's Captured Live At The Forum showcases Cory very well! Play Try A Little Tenderness from that album, it's great!
Yes. They need to be in the Rock Hall! One of my favorite groups!
Folks around the globe are now singing along.... I've said it on another of your videos. Three Dog Night is perhaps the best sing a long band in history. You just can't help it!
Most of us in the UK don’t know it 😢
@@stephenbrown4211 I honestly figured this was a world wide hit....I can tell you I recently found a song from the UK that I had never heard and now I have it on my playlist constantly..... Perfect by Fairground Attraction, it is wonderful and would have been huge in the states if they'd have released it here. So 80's.

@@TheSlowoldman This American knows "Perfect" by the excellent Fairground Attraction was indeed released here. It peaked at #80. I saw its video on California Music Channel. I rewrote its lyrics as "Furry," combined with a model and stuffed animal photo, giving full credit to the original.
Never been to Spain is my solo road trip song always
Love Shamabala. The harmonies of Three Do Night are so solid. Adam, it’s amazing how your Dad was prepping you for a career out of his passion. Thanks for what you do.
SO THIS IS WHAT THIS SONG IS? Been hearing it all my Life, but never once did a DJ say the name of the band m, nor the song...what a World!
Glad you know now!
The DJ probably always felt the song title and band that did it were self evident.
Same for me. I would always just barely hear it at an amusement park or in a department store. I could never make out the lyrics. I think I finally stumbled across it on UA-cam and learned the title.
I was born in 1973 & i always felt both Shambala and My Maria were super fun songs to be born in the same year as BUT I never knew the same guy wrote both songs! Thanks, Professor, for this new insight!
Being a huge fan of the TV show LOST, the placement of Shambala in that show was legendary.
Which version (of the show, not the song)?
@rmhartman As far as I know there is only one LOST tv show.... 2004-2010
I remember it was in the 1st half of the 3rd season of Lost - the song was used to sentimental effect for the character Hurley's flashback in the episode "Tricia Tanaka Is Dead." Very touching and poignant
Cory deserved so much respect and praise. His voice was great❣️ Your dad was right.
I'm 70 and Cory influenced me more than any other singer. I was in cover bands from age 17 to 27 and played and sang a ton of Three Dog Night songs. I tried to sound like him and even tried to dress like him. I always knew there was something special about him. May he rest in peace.
"Dress like him"? - HA - Pretty cool
Love that Daniel gave BW My Maria to make up for Shambala and became his biggest hit.
I love this band so much and this song. My husband knows if I pass away before him he has to play Shambala!!!! Thank you so much for covering them and giving them especially Corey the attention and accolades they so richly deserve!!!❤️🇨🇦😘
Back in the day, three dog night was one of my favorite bands. I'm so glad you covered them. They definitely deserved way more recognition than they received. There was really no one else like them. I always thought of them as rockin soul.😎
This song takes me back to when I would buy 45 rpm records for 97 cents 😎 and AM radio ❤

Indeed!
3DN was my personal favorite band in the early 1970s. Everybody loved the Beatles and the Stones. Zeppelin and Jimi were ubiquitous. 3DN was special for me beginning with Joy to the World. Shambala was after their peak with me, but I loved it all the same. Thanks for showcasing this song and Cory Wells background. It gives me a new appreciation
Congratulations on your soon to be reached milestone of 1 million subscribers. Great job professor. Love your work.
Thank you very much!
What I remember most about Three Dog Night is how elaborate their LP artwork was.
Help Adam hit the million subscribers! He's almost there! Best storyteller of our favorite rock music out there! Thanks Adam!
I just subbed!
Been there, done that!!!
Three Dog Night; my first concert in around 1973. I was 13-years old and took the bus to Providence, R.I. from a small town on the coast.
Anyone who remembers the birth of Classic Rock Stations is gonna love this channel🤓
Chuck Negrons voice was amazing...but Corey Wells was my favorite, who also had a great voice.
It was "Mama told me not to come" that made me go out and by their album. That's when i really realized how terrific Three Dog Night were.
Yes, they "definitely" belong in the RRHOF. 👍 😊
Thank you for reminding me of all the great music. I was born in '71 and remembered hearing all these great talents but were too young to appreciate them at the time. I hope it grabs the ears and harts of today's generation. Keep up the great work. ❤
Thanks for listening
I read Chuck Negron's vivid autobiography of his self-destructive drug habits, "Three Dog Nightmare", and it is truly astonishing he didn't go long before Cory Wells. Thanks to all three of them and their backup band for leaving us such excellent music.
So true.
The fact he’s still here is a miracle.
That was no backup band! They were every bit as important to the sound of TDN as the vocalists. Can you think of a more distinctive keyboardist than Jimmy Greenspoon? Allsup on guitar was a quiet genius who defined a lot of their songs that I love. TDN was a band, not 3 guys.
Cory's live performance of Try a Little Tenderness is outstanding, Just as great as Otis Redding's..
Your dad had a really great taste in music group's. He did a great job raising his boy. I am sure his light is shining bright.
I had heard this song when I was about 4 or 5 years old. Then, in 1990, I was walking around our state fair and heard that familiar song. Three Dog Night was playing a free show and I just happened to be there when they were performing. I took a seat on the grass in front of the stage and enjoyed one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. An older man told me about the Stevenson version, so as soon as I could, I went out to look for that version. After that, I made sure to tell everyone I knew about the Stevenson version every time I heard the Three Night Dog version.
How cool!
I didn’t even know there was another version!
I visited the R&R HOF with my dad a few years after it opened, and we both enjoyed seeing all the bands we grew up with honored. Since then, though, the R&R HOF has proven to be a joke, with the long list of incredible rock acts kept out, coupled with some very questionable ones let in. My dad passed away in 2020, but I know he'd be happy to hear you standing up for all the deserving bands not in the HOF. Keep fighting the good fight, Professor!
Will do!
Three Dog Night! OMG, what a wonderful catalog of fabulous music! I'm always ready for their songs, and singing along. 💜💜💜💜💜👍😎

Somewhere around 1974 , my mom took us 4 kids for a road trip vacation. We didn’t have very many as mom was raising 4 kids on her own. We drove from Michigan to Canada and found an out of the we ended up at a motel in the middle of no their shoulders and just having a great time. Love Three Dog Night, the soundtrack of my childhood. :D
Shambala is featured in the Buck Rogers episode Cosmic Whiz Kid guest starring Gary Coleman. Buck Rogers, played by Gil Gerard, plays Shambala and mentions Three Dog Night in the dialogue. The episode aired Nov 15, 1979.
The most successful pop/rock band that never wrote a lyric or a note. "Out In The Country", is my fave 3DN song. We had just moved from a one-horse town, La Grange TX, to Dallas. Every time I heard it then and hear it now, it takes me back to my country roots.
I remember hearing this song in a gasoline commercial in the early 2000’s and it took me forever to figure out the name of the song.
Have loved it ever since.

I know. That was a surprise for me.
The bands I loved the most all had great harmonies. Three Dog Night, Crosby Stills & Nash (& Young), The Doobie Brothers, the Mamas & Papas, Beach Boys, Oak Ridge Boys, BW Stevens, Pink Floyd, Eagles, and so many other great bands. I was born in 1955 and grew up during some of the most exciting times in music. My son, now in his mid 30s, grew up hearing all kinds of music and has introduced me to some different genres too. Life wouldn't be the same without music.
I remember in grade-school performing a play/presentation dressed as frogs dancing and lip singing to Joy To The World-Jeremiah Was A Bullfrog with mock guitars in green tights... Great memories!!
Both my oldest brother and sister were fans of Three dog night. I loved the memories with them and music❤❤❤ Road to Shambala!
Thanks for sharing Cherrie!
We’re all on that road!
Omg!!! I have always loved Three Dog Night! Thank you so much for doing such a fantastic job telling the stories of these timeless classics! And, I love the BW story too! My Maria is one of my favorite songs as well, and now I can certainly hear the Shambala influence of Three Dog Night! Started crying when you started mentioning your dad, and made me think about my mom who passed in 21. You just know they, as well as Cory Wells continue to shine their light.❤🥹
I was absolutely gutted when I heard the news of Cory's death on the radio. He is possibly my favorite male singer ever and could sing soul, rock, pop, or country, putting everything into it emotionally. There is just something in his voice that I loved from the very first time I heard it.
I got to see TDN about 20 years ago and they were amazing. " Eli's coming" blew me away and the entire concert was a joyous blast! I met them briefly after the concert and they were lovely.
One thing that rarely is noted is that TDN"s Mike Allsup is not only a very good guitarist, but has a deep bass singing voice!
Shambala is an earworm song for me.
Like your father I too loved Three Dog Night, I was able to see them in concert three times, a awesome time it was! I am so proud of your fathers love of music and that he passed the love down to you...Rock On!!!

Three Dog Night takes the message from a spiritual advisor and turns it into a hit song. I usually receive a VAGUE prediction (usually from fortune cookies) like, "A pleasant surprise is awaiting you." When my car passes inspection, I'm left wondering if that was it. I guess it helps to have a creative mind and musical talent! I remember singing along with this on the radio as a kid, although I got the words wrong.

I woke from a dream and had Shambala in my head. I was happy all day. 😊 Yes, Three Dog Night needs to be in the R&RHOF!
Love "Shambala"-It's clearly one of Three Dog Night's greatest songs.
Thank you for shining a light on the passing of Cory Wells, I agree the media whiffed on giving the coverage of his death when we lost a great member of one of the biggest and best bands of the 70s. This was a great feel good sing a long song by a feel good band. Can you cover my favorite song by them " Never been to Spain " Im sure I'm not alone in the love for 3DN version. Fantastic episode professor, ton of information

Never Been to Spain is also my favorite song by them! I don’t know why, but it captures a specific magic.
It was nice to here about dads prospective on rock music if makes you feel good go with it sing along loud who cares what others think or feel As we said in the 70 s let it all hang out! Enjoy your experience! Thanks Adam
Hearing virtually ANYTHING from TDN always puts me in many different places in 1970’s Los Angeles, reliving some of the best memories of my youth. Although it gets a little tough to remember all the lyrics these days, it’s impossible not to find yourself belting out those hook lines at full concert levels! Yeah, these guys always had our toes tapping, our fingers snapping and heads rockin’,……..all involuntarily. Yes, it is a downright crime that such a huge part of our musical history isn’t in the R&RHOF. Which is why I personally give the “Hall” about as much attention as I do most award shows. The way I see it, every song is a hit….to someone. Music should just be enjoyed, appreciated and celebrated. Not put into competitions. Thanks, Professor. You started my day off right,…….again.
I have always loved "Shambala" so glad to hear the details of how it came to be. Thanks again, Music Professor for yet again filling in the blanks for us around another beloved song.

Cory was the greatest singer, Shambala was the greatest song. I was so sure when I started hearing it on the radio that it would be their last hit because they'd been on top for so long. I was wrong. Cory sang all my favorite songs. It sucked when they lost Chuck, but they still put on an amazing show. Losing Cory is just too much. Now I'm on the road to Shambala, and I'll see you all when we get there!
One of my favorite songs ever! Reminds me of listening to it on 13Q AM in Pittsburgh
I didn’t know Donna Summer sang backup on “Shambala.” Joe Schermie was TDN’s original bass player. Great presentation!
Thanks!
Three Dog Night is one of my favorite groups of all time. I saw them on tour with America about a year before Cody's death & he still sounded amazing
When about in 2nd Grade of an 8 Grade School..."Jeremiah Was a Bullfrog" as the opening line of 'Joy to the World' somehow launching us through the gossamer veil of childhood and into the realm of GROWN-UP ROCK-N-ROLL forever.
Whole class of students choroeographed a dance to win the 'School Talent Show' with 'Shambala' and all the parents of our Farm Community were coerced into purchasing 'Three Dog Night' Albums and Singles as all of our FIRST SONGS from the 'BiG City - Murphey's Five and Dime' for the first time.
DON'T BELIEVE IN THE CRED OF THE ROCK-N-ROLL HALL OF FAME...HOW DARE THOSE PEOPLE. GREAT BAND!!!
I put Three Dog Night and Steve Miller Band in the same category of having the most songs you can sing along to.
Even though TDN didn’t write their songs, they sure knew how to pick songs written by A-list songwriters (Axton, Newman, Nyro…), then re-arrange them to fit their style.
Absolutely adore Three Dog Night. Have all of their biggest hits on my playlist.
My Maria always makes me think of what was probably the happiest period in my life. Really miss those young, carefree days.
RIP Cory. The same happened with the Monkees. The most health conscious, Davy, died first.
TDN is highly underrated and it’s just criminal.
I've been listening to 3 Dog Night since WAY back when they were still only Two and a half Dog Night.
Ha ha!
I was with them when they were 3 Dog Day!
