@John Wayne I think that this may be true as long as you study the right things. I studied too much of the "theory" stuff and less of the actual "performance" for the CASPer. Most of my answers to the third question were lackluster due to time constraints. Wasn't really experienced in making that decision of "okay I've written enough for this question, time to move on" so I ended up spending too long on the first two. Overall the video's advice is pretty solid. Practicing your answer format and understanding what you plan/want to get down is an additional recommendation I'd make. On the other hand, the whole "boy scout" thing is super easy to adopt.
Ethics: 1. Give both sides of the dilemma 2. Don’t harm your employers 3. Always show empathy 4. * Always respect the law 5. Always try to get help from others Personal: 1. Prepare personal examples -> when you failed, when you could have done something better, when you did something good 2. Don’t blame other people, own up to your mistakes 3. Great video as always! I'm a nursing student on the path to medical school and I'm supposed to take the Casper when I graduate from my 2-year Practical nursing program next summer(2021). But I recently found out that the Casper is only valid for one application cycle. Does that mean I would have to take it again when actually do apply to medical school( maybe for the 2022 0r 2023 cycle)?

An example of a CASPer test question: One member of your student group, Sue, is showing up unprepared and not contributing. She blames this shortcoming on a paper she had to write, but the other members argue that they were responsible for the same paper yet still managed to show up prepared. Two other members begin confronting Sue about the problem. Question 1: You are a member of the study group and have not participated in the interaction so far, but now the group is looking to you. How would you defuse this situation? Answer I do not want to jump to any conclusions. I would ask Sue if everything was okay and if anything was going on outside of class in a non- accusatory manner. Sue could be going through a difficult time that we do not know about. If this was the case then I would ask her if there was anything we could do to help her, offer campus resources that might be beneficial, and consider talking to the professor to explain the situation. If Sue said nothing was going on, but still seemed to be troubled I would talk to her privately to make sure that nothing else was really going on. If there was nothing else going on, and Sue was simply not contributing to the group then I would reestablish expectations with the group. I would collaborate with everyone and find everyone's role in the group and make sure that everyone finds it fair and agrees. By Sue not contributing the group, it affects her grades as well as the entire groups grade. It could further effect other students in the class as not all members are doing equal work.

As with all essay - style tests, there is room for nuance and subjectivity when individuals mark it. My plan was to have something down for each question asked to allow for a more complete answer. But you're right in that this is only my opinion 🤙 I'm sure people can and have done well having left some questions blank

Great video! Do you know if the Canadian CASPER test the same as the U.S. test? I've heard people had to take it twice when applying to schools in the 2 countries so I was mostly wondering if the Astroff Consultants prep is worth it if you're taking the test for just U.S. schools.
Thanks Mako! I'm not an expert when it comes to the different versions of the test, but I have seen forums that suggest that there are in fact differences between the Canadian and American versions. I'm definitely not trying to advertise Astroff by any means😅 but I would highly suggest some sort of practice CASPer test (in a full exam format). If there are any American companies aimed at the US version specifically, then you might be better off going with them. On the other hand though, I feel like the Canadian and American versions are similar enough where the Astroff tests should definitely be able to help you prepare. Hope this helps :)
Hahaa. I just took the typing test and it's about 67wpm but I still consider it slow for me. But I guess I'll be okay. It's probably why I prefer to write messages and replies on a laptop/computer because I can get it out my thoughts/ideas faster.
Re: those 10 traits being evaluated, would you say that they're analyzed with every question and I should try to hit each trait with every answer I give? Or should I just make it a goal to demonstrate each of the traits at one point or another during my CASPer? I guess it wouldn't be unreasonable to assume that some questions will be more appropriate for one trait in particular than the others, huh?
I don't think that each one of the traits can be evaluated properly in each question, but rather the entire test is designed to evaluate those 10 traits. I'd definitely agree with you 🤙

No worries Ikram, I'm glad you liked it! and thanks for the congratulations as well :) Great questions - so firstly, like I was saying before, I just want to be very careful with what I say about my own actual test. BUT, I can say that in my preparation, some sample questions that I found floating around in forums would be like: "Describe a situation in which you disagreed with someone - (next questions) How did you settle the disagreement? - (next question) What could you have done differently to improve the way you handled the disagreement? Then other similar practice questions on - your biggest weakness - your biggest strength - describing a time when you were careless - (etc. etc.) One thing that I would actually do for prep was make up questions based on self-reflection and then answer them. (ex. what do you wish you could change about yourself? etc.) - this will also be important during your interview prep later on :) Now in terms of similar questions... all I can really say is that with enough prep, it'll be impossible for them to make up a question that you haven't come across LOL. I've heard stories, and can definitely see how it could happen, but from the statistical side of things, it's probably fairly unlikely. In any case, I wish you the best of luck with your test! Practice and look for sample answers online :D Google "Sample CASPer questions and answers," and compare what you thought to how other people might have answered it
Within the same question stems - definitely! I tried my best to organize my answers as best as I could though. That way I had some thing unique to say for each specific question. But you definitely get some overlap :)

Definitely! but you probably won't have much time afterwards to re-read what you wrote. Take small bullet points of central concepts or important details if you'd like, but the situations aren't particularly hard to remember (each one is about 1-2 minutes long) good luck!
when naming the ethical dilemma should one state it in terms of the context or with general terms? ie. "In this scenario, I have to decide whether I would speak to my manager about the forged letter or choose to not get involved by initiating a serious conversation" vs. "In this scenario, I have to choose between the ethical dilemma of standing up for what is right and keeping the peace"
Great Video, just curious what your CARS score was for getting into McMaster, and if you applied as an Ontario resident. I would love to go there but as an out of province applicants I'm not sure if I'll make th cut.
Thanks Billie, glad you liked it :) I had a 131 in CARS when I applied, but don't use me as an example. The school's average last cycle was around a 129 and even then, a high GPA and CASPer score will make up for a lower CARS mark. I don't know what province you're from, but I've definitely met students in my class so far that applied from out of Ontario. Good luck with applications!
Hello! I just wanted to thank you for your video, it was very helpful. I took my exam on sept 9 and I felt very confident after practicing for 2 weeks. I was lost at first but I really appreciate all the tips you shared! these tips help me find a general way to formulate my answers and how to prepare accordingly. Honestly, the 5 minute time limit was not that bad because I felt that I had enough time to answer at least the first 2 questions and almost half of the last one. Thank you so so much!!!!
@@gillammar1 hello Ammar! I bought the CASPER practice book from Bemo it was $9 on amazon. I looked at their topics and saw similarities and differences with my answers. I practiced all the questions in that book. It was overall a good book because it helped me understand how to get more perspectives on an issue and how to decide what to say. Also, make sure you take the free CASPer test, taking the test made me feel soo prepared for the actual exam. It is the same format so with similar topics orbissues. Practice practice. Oh and one thing i wish i practiced was writing down stories from your own life experiences. For example, they can ask you something like talk about failing after trying so hard or talk about a conflict that occurred between you and someone else how did you resolve it. Honestly writing down some life experiences will help you a lot since you can have them ready when you answer the questions. Do this, so everytime there’s a practice question, write down a situation that was similar to the practice question that occurred in your life. Make sure to review these life experiences before test day. And honestly it is not a stressful test at all. So practice and do your part and you’ll do well! Good luck :)

I don't know what that, "casper test is awaiting" status means, but if you go on their website, they have a chatline available where someone who works with them will answer your questions about stuff like that. One question I have that I did not hear you talking about is the format that you used to write your answer during the official test. I want to use full sentences but I feel like I can save so much time and focus way better when I use point form. What do you suggest? Do you think I would be fine if I use point form, or should I definitely go with complete sentences?

Hello Gianluca. I do have one more question to ask you and it is regarding spelling and grammar errors on the test. Casper mentions on their website that raters are trained to ignore spelling and grammar mistakes. When you did your Casper test, did you have some spelling and grammar mistakes or did you type everything spelled perfectly for each of the 12 sections? Thanks.

Awesome, I’m so glad that you liked it :) McMaster takes your cumulative GPA from all of the courses that you’ve taken in undergrad only. And my GPA was a 3.69, 3.30, 3.63, and 3.92. I took a 5th year as well but it wasn’t included in the calculation because I applied while I was still in school. I got a 3.98 that year. Whatever your situation, you can do it!

I just wanted to know if you could specify which test level from Astroff you took that you found similar to the actual Casper test? I see that Astroff has Simulated Casper test levels 1,2,3,and 4 based on difficulty. Did you take simulated Casper test level #4 that had 8 video based scenarios and 4 word based prompts to prepare for the actual Casper test? Or did you use either level 1,2,or 3 to prepare for the Casper test? Thanks!

Hey Chrystal, that's a great question! To the best of my knowledge, the types of questions on the CASPer test are standardized regardless of your program - at least when I wrote it, it definitely did not feel like a strictly medical school test. The questions themselves focus on the core values that CASper tests for (no medical or other specialty knowledge needed) and the scenarios will be in a variety of different settings: classrooms, supermarkets, your hypothetical friend's house, etc. A medical office or pharmacy could also be fair game. However, if you would like an official answer, CASPer has an "ask a question" chat box when you visit their site - I've used it in the past and they're very good at getting back to you. Hope this helped and good luck with your test :)

For passage-based prompts, do you get like 30 seconds or something to read the prompt or does the 5-minute timer start immediately? Thanks in advance!
From what I can remember, you get to read the prompt first for 1-2 minuets and then it redirects you to the questions where the 5 minute timer starts!

Definitely! but you probably won't have much time afterwards to re-read what you wrote. Take small bullet points of central concepts or important details if you'd like, but the situations aren't particularly hard to remember (each one is about 1-2 minutes long)

when naming the ethical dilemma should one state it in terms of the context or with general terms? ie. "In this scenario, I have to decide whether I would speak to my manager about the forged letter or choose to not get involved by initiating a serious conversation" vs. "In this scenario, I have to choose between the ethical dilemma of standing up for what is right and keeping the peace"
Personally I think it's a matter of personal preference :) However, when I wrote, I chose to be specific when naming the dilemma.
Great Video, just curious what your CARS score was for getting into McMaster, and if you applied as an Ontario resident. I would love to go there but as an out of province applicants I'm not sure if I'll make th cut.

I had a 131 in CARS when I applied, but don't use me as an example. The school's average last cycle was around a 129 and even then, a high GPA and CASPer score will make up for a lower CARS mark. I don't know what province you're from, but I've definitely met students in my class so far that applied from out of Ontario.

Hello! I just wanted to thank you for your video, it was very helpful. I took my exam on sept 9 and I felt very confident after practicing for 2 weeks. I was lost at first but I really appreciate all the tips you shared! these tips help me find a general way to formulate my answers and how to prepare accordingly. Honestly, the 5 minute time limit was not that bad because I felt that I had enough time to answer at least the first 2 questions and almost half of the last one. Thank you so so much!!!!

@@gillammar1 hello Ammar! I bought the CASPER practice book from Bemo it was $9 on amazon. I looked at their topics and saw similarities and differences with my answers. I practiced all the questions in that book. It was overall a good book because it helped me understand how to get more perspectives on an issue and how to decide what to say. Also, make sure you take the free CASPer test, taking the test made me feel soo prepared for the actual exam. It is the same format so with similar topics orbissues. Practice practice. Oh and one thing i wish i practiced was writing down stories from your own life experiences. For example, they can ask you something like talk about failing after trying so hard or talk about a conflict that occurred between you and someone else how did you resolve it. Honestly writing down some life experiences will help you a lot since you can have them ready when you answer the questions. Do this, so everytime there’s a practice question, write down a situation that was similar to the practice question that occurred in your life. Make sure to review these life experiences before test day. And honestly it is not a stressful test at all. So practice and do your part and you’ll do well! Good luck :)

@@jenniesuen4991 As far as I know, CASPer will never let you know whether or not you got a good score on the test. They just submit your results to the programs that you applied to.
I don't know what that, "casper test is awaiting" status means, but if you go on their website, they have a chatline available where someone who works with them will answer your questions about stuff like that. They'll definitely be able to help you 🤙

This was very informative! Thank you so much for putting the effort. One question I have that I did not hear you talking about is the format that you used to write your answer during the official test. I want to use full sentences but I feel like I can save so much time and focus way better when I use point form. What do you suggest? Do you think I would be fine if I use point form, or should I definitely go with complete sentences?
No problem buddy, glad it helped :D In my opinion, the format you use doesn't matter. I chose to go with full sentences, but a few of my friends used point form and did find as well. Whichever way you practice with though, be sure to use the same method on the actual test.

Hello Gianluca. I do have one more question to ask you and it is regarding spelling and grammar errors on the test. Casper mentions on their website that raters are trained to ignore spelling and grammar mistakes. When you did your Casper test, did you have some spelling and grammar mistakes or did you type everything spelled perfectly for each of the 12 sections? Thanks.

Awesome, I’m so glad that you liked it :) McMaster takes your cumulative GPA from all of the courses that you’ve taken in undergrad only. And my GPA was a 3.69, 3.30, 3.63, and 3.92. I took a 5th year as well but it wasn’t included in the calculation because I applied while I was still in school. I got a 3.98 that year.

Thank you for this informative video! Gianluca, In the last section of your video you mentioned that you used full lenght practice exams from Astroff to prepare for the Casper test. I just wanted to know if you could specify which test level from Astroff you took that you found similar to the actual Casper test? I see that Astroff has Simulated Casper test levels 1,2,3,and 4 based on difficulty. Did you take simulated Casper test level #4 that had 8 video based scenarios and 4 word based prompts to prepare for the actual Casper test? Or did you use either level 1,2,or 3 to prepare for the Casper test? Thanks!

Or did you only use Astroff levels 2 and 3 practice tests to study for the actual Casper test?
As I’m going to take the Casper test to enter a master teaching programme, does it mean that I would get more scenarios at a school rather than a hospital? Thanks!
Hey Chrystal, that's a great question! To the best of my knowledge, the types of questions on the CASPer test are standardized regardless of your program - at least when I wrote it, it definitely did not feel like a strictly medical school test. The questions themselves focus on the core values that CASper tests for (no medical or other specialty knowledge needed) and the scenarios will be in a variety of different settings: classrooms, supermarkets, your hypothetical friend's house, etc. A medical office or pharmacy could also be fair game.
However, if you would like an official answer, CASPer has an "ask a question" chat box when you visit their site - I've used it in the past and they're very good at getting back to you.
