The part about feeling unworthy of trauma because of being told „You were a baby in hiding who was survived and did not starve in a Ghetto” was harrowingly sad. I was so happy to hear she found her Community and whoever organized that conference did something extremely important.
I loved hearing this story and still think these stories are so important for the kids of our current world to hear. History has a way of repeating itself when we forget what has happened. Thank you so much for sharing yourself.
Thank you so much, Bertie, for sharing your survival story with us. It is indeed a story of survival. Your parents were very wise to do everything they did to keep you all alive. Blessings to you and your family.
Bertie told this story so well. She’s a special person that touches people with her story. It’s so important to hear this truthful account of what was done to the Jews in her native Dutch country.
You are a wise, loving and beautiful soul and person, thank you with all my heart for telling your story and giving some sentences you will never know how helpful they are to me. I wish I could embrace you.
I agree with everything you said. Of her sentences, I will try to remember ... As time goes on, a hole will remain, but try not to fall into it. (paraphrased)
@ So you were impressed by the same sentence! I even wrote it down: “The hole never goes away but with time you stop falling in.” These words are such a comfort for me in a bit hurtful time of my life, and I am happy we share our delight! I wish you a wonderful New Year, all the best! ♥️
Thank our Bertie for sharing your story💜 and that you found a community of other hidden children. I can only imagine the trauma you experienced of separation from your mother, leading to difficulty in making deep human connections. Bless you for your insights and thoughtful interview.
An excellent program that holds your interest throughout. This woman has a fantastic capacity to tell her story in a complete way which is spellbinding. OIne iof the best Holocaust remembranc shows I have ever seen. Thanks to her for telling her story so completely for the world to know. Sincerely, Dr. R. Wistuba, Director, The Fraenkel and Pinkus Collections , NYC. USA
Thank you for sharing your family's story. Im glad you found other survivors who had hidden. I remember the societal attitudes you mention, in South Africa and New Zealand
I listen to many of these survivor stories . Thank you ! Many survivors have written about their experiences . One I read was by Meip Geis who helped hide the Frank family . Anne Remembered is the name of it , I think .
Sad they had to stay in their country . Too bad her parents didnt escape so that they could raise their child. She seems amazingly upbeat for such a childhood, being passed around so so much though. Blessings to her.
None of the resistance activities of the Dutch surprise me. I’m Dutch American, and all of my relatives came to the US between 1890-1910, so no one that I’m related to was involved in any of this. But over the years I’ve had the chance to talk to many elderly Dutch people who came to the US after WW2, and all of them have stories about them or their relatives being involved in the Dutch resistance. They HATED the Germans and were willing to do almost anything to resist them. I have always been interested in WW2 and have taken the opportunity to question people about what it was like to be in Holland during the war. At times these people haven’t even told their own children these stories, and their adult kids have told me later that they have never heard anything about that before. I think they came to the US and wanted to leave the trauma of the war behind them. There are a lot of stories out there that really need to be told.
How can you tell? First, I am not, in any way, comparing my experience to that of the Jews. My experience is simply another's ability to know one's religion even if there is no outside indication thereof. In 1964, my father was transferred to Huntsville, AL (USA.) At that time in the South, there wasn't only racism against blacks and Jews, but Catholics and "Yankees" as well. If you weren't "Southern," you were a "Yankee." My family had a double whammy, we were Yankees and Catholics. And then my mother became heavily involved in the civil rights movement. Not popular. When I was in elementary school, I found I knew, without asking, who the Catholics were, even if I saw them for a minute in a hallway. There was a difference about them, even the Southern Catholics. I never figured out how I knew, I just knew. So, yes, I can see others knowing a person's religion, even if one doesn't know the person. I *never* heard my parents disparage another race or religion.
WTF ?!?! ... RUDE !!!! Why in the world would you take the time to listen to this beautiful woman's story and then say something like that? Sheesh ... kids nowdays 😡👺
