With the Hot Springs Spiritual Experience Uniting Yuppies and Hippies intro thrown in for free. From 7/23/95, Enid, Ok 'Leonardo's Adventure Quest' Fundraiser. Tuning: B1F#2C#3D3A3D4.
Only Michael could choose this tuning and make these chords. Its so far beyond any kind of single instrument sound, you have to wonder how it was ever conceived. One of my favorites by him
+Paul Willett I think it's because he never really considered himself a guitarist. He was a composer by heart. The guitar was merely his way of creative release. I believe it was his ability to disconnect himself from his instrument that ultimately led him to create his soundscape.
I remember reading that Michael wrote many things that could not physically be played on a 6/7/8/10.... stringed guitar. I'm sure that's why the harp guitar became a part of his gig. As mentioned above the guitar was simply a meduim for him.
My soul is rocked....... THank you so much for posting these. Ive heard MH for the first time and I get that feeling of being blasted on all levels; just what I needed! Comes close to a "god" experience where I feel something from beyond. Deep, deep chords and rhythm, spellbound.
Never heard this until just now. May just be my favorite by him, as I believe it has more feeling to it than any other by him (which is saying something!).. Having the priveledge to have known him from his playing around Baltimore & even taken 2 guitar lessons from him (Apr1980), like Chopin this guy left us way too early.. Bittersweet😟🙂
After learning this piece that phrase is definitly the most pronounced and fun to play ! And yes the undertones and overall drone of the song is very unique 👌
The first harmonic note of the song is really powerful... I would like to take the guitar and learn this song, but I play the bass so I can just listen, and of course love the song and who wrote it. Thanks Michael.
I did. and finally, after going to school on the East coast, uh, I moved back there, and I started going to this hot springs ... just north of Calistoga... and the hot pool there, which comes right out of the ground at 120 (F)... ( that's the first minute or so ........ He's talking about Harbin hot springs .... harbin org ... just north of Calistoga Ca)

Try to imagine Hedges going about his daily business, without a guitar in his hands. I can't man. Something would seem very wrong if he was without guitar.
Did Michael inherit the famed Taproot BMW from somebody? I always wondered how he ended up driving a BMW - I wasn't under the impression that he was exceptionally well-to-do financially and it's pretty clear that a BMW was a really quirky fit considering the rest of his image. (Then again, what could be more Michael Hedges than one more facet of complexity?) Anyway, just curious. :)
Michael was a Capricorn, he and I went to High school together, we were guitar buddies. I'm a Capricorn. For all our non-materialistic desires, a nice car is the only way to ride. I drive a Mercedes, you gotta get around man, you may as well enjoy German made engines, great smooth ride, a car like his could hug those Mendocino curvy roads through the Redwoods and drive like butta. Ironic that he skidded off, but that could have been any car on those treacherous roads. I have an AWD, originally priced 70,000 dollar Mercedes SUV. I bought it pre-owned, with 70,000 miles on it, 10 years old, for 10,000 dollars, which is comparable in price for a stock Ford truck with no A/C. But my little baby has all the bells and whistles. The pitch in ads for Mercedes, touts something like: "The best or nothing at all." A BMW 325 is none-too-shabby either. Damn beautiful car. For all the driving we are forced to do, to get from one place to another, me thinks Capricorns just like riding in style, and if people think we got money, well, let 'em think what they want...;) Love you, miss you buddy. Michael had great comedic timing, another Capricorn attribute!
michael hedges will always be the man, but our new michael hedges ( no offence) is erik mongrain i think , just listen to raindigger, pandora's box , equilibrium , eons illusion, airtap . hedges was his niche , like he said. trust me he worth the watch.
Should I give them the Harbin rap? Should I give them a Harbin rap? They might think I'm too wierd. (talking to self ... uncertain of whether to continue,,,) YEAH! I live in California ... Some of you guessed that ... When I was going there for the first time, which was in the junior year of highschool, people were signing my yearbooks and telling me, generally, the message that, California was the place where I belonged. "See ya later, you'll have a great time there, we're sure of it!"
im convinced the movie'' August Rush''was totally Based off his Guitar Style & Approach''good movie''gets a little far fetched though on the ending''like most holly wood movies''
I hate myself for lovin' you and the weakness that it showed You were just a painted face on a trip down Suicide Road. The stage was set, the lights went out all around the old hotel, I hate myself for lovin' you and I'm glad the curtain fell. I hate that foolish game we played and the need that was expressed And the mercy that you showed to me, who ever would have guessed? I went out on Lower Broadway and I felt that place within, That hollow place where martyrs weep and angels play with sin. Heard your songs of freedom and man forever stripped, Acting out his folly while his back is being whipped. Like a slave in orbit, he's beaten 'til he's tame, All for a moment's glory and it's a dirty, rotten shame. There are those who worship loneliness, I'm not one of them, In this age of fiberglass I'm searching for a gem. The crystal ball up on the wall hasn't shown me nothing yet, I've paid the price of solitude, but at last I'm out of debt. Can't recall a useful thing you ever did for me 'Cept pat me on the back one time when I was on my knees. We stared into each other's eyes 'til one of us would break, No use to apologize, what diff'rence would it make? So sing your praise of progress and of the Doom Machine, The naked truth is still taboo whenever it can be seen. Lady Luck, who shines on me, will tell you where I'm at, I hate myself for lovin' you, but I should get over that.
That's the "Dirge" I was looking for. This guy is good, though. I would like to hear him play Dylan's Dirge, since it is nowhere to be found on UA-cam.
I love his work. Every song has these moody, otherworldly sounding melodies that I seem to look for in music and find so little of.
His music just flows somewhere in the ether, trying to shed a little light on our eternal questions and fears.Still miss you man.......
This is definitely one of my favorites by this amazing musician. An awesome work!
Michael Hedges is another great example of a musical genius

I don't know how I've never seen this but that's the coolest MH monologue ever
WOW. Absolutely incredible, as always, but this particular song hits different. I can only imagine what this must have sounded like live.
His songwriting captures so many different moods!
Glory Be! Glory Be!
Wish I could have there to see him play - what a blessing nevertheless to watch the video - thanks!

Truly amazing. I am so grateful to be around in this time. To experience this musician!

He told this story at Park West.....love it.
Miss you, man.
Awaiting to hear his version of Almost Cut my Hair. He always started his tours here at UW Oshkosh, WI due to his old time friend living close by.
5 seconds, And this guy is UNIQUE
the passage at 7:05 ends with such a dagger in the heart, i never heard a chord like it. its a beautiful sad incredible piece of music.

21th century artists have much to learn from Michael's stage speeches. :)
The first harmonic note of the song is really powerful... I would like to take the guitar and learn this song, but I play the bass so I can just listen, and of course love the song and who wrote it. Thanks Michael.

This song is exactly how I feel about the fact that he died young, and that I never got to see him.

@RiouxItsMe yes, great suggestion...thanks!
Does anyone know a video how to get into this tuning?

@ZOMBIELANDakaUSA Hedges was the man.
Apparently only 6/100 of a percent of the people who clicked this video liked it. Michael, I hope you are in a better place.
@infinitesimotel he's amazing you liked him?
What is Michael saying in the beginning? I can't understand it. Is it "Should I give them the harp and rap"? What does it mean?
@RiouxItsMe also check out justin king he has a similiar style as well
it almost has a metal thing goin on in it''

@cr5691 hmmm as i saw justin play with his skills not his heart so i would not say that.
