  • The new Atari Jaguar Emulator known as BigPEmu can do some truly stunning things with old Jaguar games. One game that can really show an improvement using this emulator is Tempest 2000. With 3X speed set for the CPU, this thing can make this classic shooter look ultra smooth... but how does it compare to The Sega Saturn and Playstation versions?
    Let's take a look.
Download BigPEmu today and play some Atari Jaguar games!

The Jag version could have been a lot faster and higher resolution. One thing on the Jag version is it is processing all the music and sound on the DSP, whereas the Saturn and PS version are just streaming the music. Also the Jag version does most of the effects with the Blitter when it could have been sped up drastically if done on the RISC GPU and Object Processor. On top of that to save cost (make more money) Atari wanted this keeping to a 2MB cart, whereas the Saturn and PS did not have any memory limitations. Would have been awesome to see a Jag CD version of this game.

Now we need a Saturn emulator with an overclock function. I think every gen 5 and 6 system has an emulator that supports overclocking BUT the Saturn now.

I would add that the Saturn version has noticeable colour banding in the polygon fills and the Playstation version has terrible looking score and lives graphics. For me an accelerated Jaguar (Emulator) would be the preferred option. It also has the original tracker module soundtrack, which is very dear to my heart, not that the CD soundtrack isn't excellent :)

The Jaguar version has sick gradient cycle shading over the Saturn and PC ports(of the time). It definitely looked better even at 25fps

Oh wow I didn't know this emulator was the same one as the Atari Jaguar games for the Atari 50 The Anniversary Celebration which I bought and enjoy before finding out about this emulator. Thanks for sharing info and emulator. :)

AFAIK the original PlayStation version was the only one of the three to support rotary controls in a way that was actually acquirable at its release.
Jaguar had rotary controls but the controller was never made and even getting a modded controller to work requires a special code.
The PlayStation version accepts a mouse as a rotary controller and it works 100% the way you would expect, though I think it tracks backwards?
The Saturn version crashes to the CD Player if you have a mouse plugged in (at least in emulation it does).

I used to know people who worked at High Voltage Software, so I do know the main programmer for Tempest 2000. I still remember when I tried to buy it on the Jag, the software store normally got 50 or more copies of a game but they only got 3 copies of Jag version of Tempest 2000, and this was near Chicago in a big mall. BTW he was with me when I tried to buy the Jag version of the game. I just wish I could remember the cheat for the Jag version of T2K.

I couldn't get a hold of a Jaguar to play Tempest 2000 so I had to make do with playing the unlocked version on the PSX, which was still a decent game in spite of the muted colors & audio.
Many years ago on my PC I used a special T2K emulator from the Llamasoft forums that plays T2K at the same type of speed and smoothness we can now get with BigPEmu, so I'm going to try that now.
BTW, the Saturn version is more faithful to the Jag version while having better framerates...pity that the Melt-O-Vision effects are so terrible.

    • @quantumleaper
      @quantumleaper Рік тому +1

The T2K emulator was my favorite emulator at least until Atari 50 was released. Also, I believe the programmer for the Jag and Saturn versions had more time to work on the Saturn version of the game.

So...I got my Jaguar in 1994 along with Tempest 2000 (and other games). I don't know what it is but the Saturn port doesn't look right...or maybe it's the sound of the shots. It just feels off and I bet the PSX version does as well (I haven't made it that far yet).
Edit* Yep, something feels wonky on the PSX version as well. I still haven't pinpointed it yet. I love the colors on it however as they do pop-off the screen.

yeah there is a noticeable difference for sure. I now prefer to play Tempest 2000 on the BigP Emulator or on the Atari 50 collection. Both of those are actually the same emulator and they are very very accurate. Love that game. Its one of my all time favorites.

Although I never player the playstation version, the Saturn version always bugged me because the voice samples were tied to the blaster/sound effects volume and not the music volume in the jaguar version. So you had to choose between lowered voice samples or lowered music.

It's not the first time I heard it pronounced like that, and it's always someone with an American accent, trying to pronounce it like a Brit. However, that's not the correct pronunciation because it's pronounced "Jag-wahr" in American accent, and "Jag-you-are" in British accent.
