As anyone here I’m a fan of flying & aviation. However, the complexity of even being able to afford a new aircraft let alone annual maintenance, repairs, holding/storage, landing fees, fuel, ongoing training & compliance just for a PPL, even a shared aircraft. These days most Australians can’t afford to pay rent let alone other expenses, I know as I alone work full time. Truly a privilege to those that have such an opportunity.
Agree, I have owned both GA and RAA aircraft but I stopped flying back in 2016. ( my first solo was in 1987). It just got too expensive to keep current.
Flying clubs can help a lot, can get access to several nice aircraft for a relatively low monthly dues/hourly rate, but you get more privileges than renting, and more availability. To talk numbers, I'm in a club that cost $1500 equity to join, $70/mo dues, and has 6 aircraft, many are trainers but I typically fly the Mooney M20J for $150/hr (USD), and at 155kt cruise it's a fairly economical aircraft. Can take the aircraft on trips up to 4 days without additional approvals, and there's no per day minimum cost.
That's why I got myself a good pc, Msfs 2020, with some mods, a VR headset, and a decent yoke and joystick, depending on what aircraft I'm flying. Using simracing pedals as rudder for the moment, but saving for proper rudder pedals. Has cost quite some money too, but assembled and upgraded it trough the years so didn't feel it as much. And offcourse, it's not even a tiny fraction of the cost of getting into flying in real life. Combining all of that with nice navigation tools like little navmap, and watching a whole lot of tutorials, sometimes by real pilots, does provide a good degree of realism, a lot of immersion, and a ton of fun! I am looking to get a real flight initiation though, wich you can find for about €200 here in Belgium, and allows you to take over once airborn!
A truly amazing aircraft! I'd love to fly one of those one day! Thanks for everything that you've done for the aviation community Stef! You've inspired me to get a pilot's license of my own and I just booked my first official lesson for Saturday - my 15th birthday! :)

I always wondered what an aircraft sales pitch was like but dont have the money to even joke about getting the opportunity. What a neat plane. Thanks for bringing us along Stef, keep up the great content.
I just took delivery of a G7 SR20. I’m really enjoying the new avionics. I won’t miss the G1000 FMS knob! Menus are more intuitive. The larger screens provide a lot of real estate to display and actually be able to see a lot of info. As a low time older pilot this really helps me keep ahead of the plane. Glad to see you’re doing well!
@StefanDrury 😅 I wish I could afford to rent it... Part 61 school, so everything's a la carte. It's rather expensive to rent so I'll stick with the much more affordable 172S. Most of the people renting the SR20s at my school are people getting trained on it because they're looking to buy one or just get high performance rating. One day...
Dear Stefan subscribing your private group a few minutes ago... I LOVE YOUR WORK... and way of living... from my side getting the PPL and with plans to buy a second hand SR22T G3 Hopping you can post soon a flight with you as PIC again!! 💪💪💪
I really like your aurcraft reviews, as you have done it with the Vision Jet or the G7 from an pilots perspective, looking forward to see more of these.
Great plane. That is certain. Its avionics suite follows the digitization trend that we see in aerospace and automotive industries so operating it should be comfortable.
3:30 I absolutely LOVE that new HSI design which utilizes visual perspective to simulate the compass rose being horizontal, like the airplane. I think it increases situational awareness, maybe not by a lot, but every little increase helps. Disappointed to see it changes to an old-fashioned vertical display during the takeoff roll.
Great demo and review. I love the airport taxi display. I can imagine getting a complex taxi routing and struggling with tge airport chart. Engine wise. Because the SR22 is such a well designed aircraft a more powerful engine might push speeds to the high drag area's so an extra ten knots, 50 kg engine and extra fuel burn for not a lit of gain.
@Stefan, can you please tell me why would you choose this one instead of DA42 as they are similar pricing? DA62 is not valid comparison. I like Cirrus full digital display, CAPS and so on...but in recent months DA42 with twin engine diesel motors.......only thing that Diamond does not have is CAPS but it has 2x more engines so......can you tell me your opinion?
FYI, Stefan, DeltaHawk's new certified engine was flight tested on two testbeds: A Velocity V-Twin. A Cirrus SR-20. The company plans to have the 200hp version of their 4-cylinder 2-stroke jetfuel ready by the end of this year, then the 235hp model next year, and already said the 6-cylinder model is in development. Considering the answer you got from Stuart when you asked him, I wouldn't be surprised if we see a G8 a few years from now running one of those new 6-cylinders they're working on right now. You might actually see your unicorn. ;)
For anything really exciting, I feel like experimental is the way to go. One of the most amazing planes I've flown in recently was a Lancair IV-P Propjet, the one I flew in was doing 290kt at FL280. A friend of mine just finished building one that will do more like 330kt.
Great video! Yep, if I had the money, this would be my aircraft. There’s quite a lot of naysayers around my field, regarding Cirrus SR22’s and I don’t understand why.
So, in other words, nothing has changed fundamentally. It is kind of becoming a decades-old Cessna approach to engineering-update colours, add a couple of bells and whistles and a pink ribbon, call it a new G, and bump up the price a bit. As you correctly pointed out, it is still the same old engine tech, and there is still no retractable option. DA50RG is a much more versatile and stylish aircraft of comparable performance.
As pilots we love the evolution of improvements in technology. From the four bladed prop to the engine FADEC management system as well as the flight parameters corrections. Now, if we could only manage our ability to make as much money as our desires propel us! I for one as investing in Tesla and Palantir. I may not live long enough to buy my dream airplane, however, my descendants can!
Really good video, thanks to both of you. You asked him early on about the comms equipment and he said they were integrated in the Garmin display. I wonder what happens if there is a failure in Garmin equipment, power or something else. Do you lose all ability to communicate - maybe defer to cell phones?
Everything is redundant on the plane. Two ADAHRS (3 if you count the remote-mounted standby attitude module), two batteries, two alternators, two displays, two touchscreen controllers, etc.
Not sure how I feel about that fuel selector enclosure deal. Is it relying on a Reed switch / sensor to indicate the panel is open and go from auto to manual and back? Or is there redundancy and an override of some sort? I get that we’re moving towards more simplicity but to be honest if someone can’t track fuel balance in ga they probably shouldn’t be flying a low wing.
Thank you for your content Stephan, glad you're better (healthier) now, I'm a follower of your account from South America (Barranquilla, Colombia). I've seen you've done short flights over ocean. Would you fly this over the Caribbean, like from Panama (PTY) to Miami, FL? Meaning would you feel safe with only one engine? Thank you. Jorge
Is there anyway to tune a vor on the fly or does it need to be added to the flight plan and selected. Say for a missed approach, would you want the vor preloaded to be able to intercept?
Apologies but commenting before ive watched the full video in case i watch and forget! Engine a huge question for me as well. Why could they not use the same engine as the DA50? Step in rigjt direction - SAF?? - AND so much easier for RTW!!!
Hey Stef, I've recently followed you're most recent tutorial on how to record in the cockpit and the audio. Although have released that because I am a student pilot currently at YSBK, I want to record the entire lesson, (typically around 1h) on a GoPro Hero 8. Although the GoPro is limited to 4gb videos. Is these any way to continuously record using an external hard drive or something similar? I've also realized that the headset audio randomly spikes in volume in random places, and is needed to be manually adjusted to -30db in Premiere Pro later on. Any advise on what I might be doing wrong would be greatly appreciated.
So here is my question. Im looking to get my license and buying a cr22 but what do I do with the plane when I land in different cities do I have to pre arrange a parking spot or do I just land and park it … remember im really really new to this I haven’t even did a discovery flight yet im just forward thinking
Hey Stefan, Does Stuart have an FAA license? how is he able to fly an "N" registered aircraft in Australia? asking since id be interested to head down that path too
1:45 Many years ago, Lexus modified it's motor vehicle engine for use in a piston single airplane, and had it certified by the FAA. Then the project vanished from the Earth. Too bad because that engine checks all your boxes except for jet-A1. Probably it could have been further modified to utilize that fuel too.
The fuel selector system seems pretty odd. If the cover sensor malfunctions you could be pulling from both but seeing a handle that suggests Left or Right only. Odd choice to to have a Both position.
The left touchscreen controller acts as the backup instrument display when you put the system into reversionary mode (if you lose the MFD or PFD for example).

An engine burning JetA would be a huge benefit to a Cirrus owner. Cessna failed with it. They make trainers. The extra cost didn't make much sense unless you had a flight school at high altitude with wealthy students. I truly think it makes more sense for the Cirrus market. These customers are already expecting to spend high 6 figure and 7 figure sums for their aircraft. Lower fuel burn and higher range could be huge
