I feel like some one needs to create a phone app that gives an overhead distance meter. Then one could walk to a point near the camera, and if they tapped on the distance shown on the app's lidar distance feed back they could lock a distance range to give higher priority to. That way if a hand came forward out of the defined focus zone it will remain focused on the face. Likely-wise they could expand on this idea and let one prioritize up to say 5 focus zone points in the lidar's scan area.and it would evaluate those distances from 1 to 5 and focus on the highest priority zone that had something in it first moving down the priority list if nothing is found.. This could also be useful from a focus pulling perspective because then one could set up two zones and simply shift their focus priority. Anyhow Lidar has a lot more powerful potential than PD movie's are making use of with this unit, and that doesn't require any type of face tracking algorithm to achieve. It would be sweet if someone like PD movie eventually decide to take advantage of.
An absolutely working tool - when you understand the logic of its operation and use it correctly. There are no ergonomic problems that they cause, such as awkward removal of wooden elements. I've been working with it for several months for a couple of frames, now the tracking and on-screen joke on the monitor does not raise any questions in the video. @@Ansonandco, Yes, it's not difficult. Control tool. You can see from me that it performs well in challenging environments for other types of lidar. This includes macro mode and overlapping frames. We have plenty of tools on the fp camera to control the operation of this lidar. The speed of starting and moving from camera to camera or changing lenses is a unique achievement. I find it easy to work with him. The only negative for me is that it refused to work in the cold, at temperatures below -15 degrees Celsius. Thank you! Very informative video-sets my expectations and no problem keeping manual focus where needed. Grateful for the continuing Sigma FP content. This camera so underrated.
I met factory guys recently on NAB show , they told me to set the infinity focus on wheel and wait for the auto focus will get you the function to focus on the object like face instead of hand in the center.
It changes it to back focus. It will focus on the second layer of subjects in the frame. I was not able to get it to focus on my face while my hands were in frame
This is what I've been using! It's not perfect, but it's good enough for 98% of what I'd possibly use it for. It wasn't worth the additional cost and hassle to get a more robust unit and I feel like LIDAR autofocus being in it's infancy at the moment, in a year or two when something better comes along - it will be easier to justify upgrading. I also like that it comes with multiple batteries and chargers for those batteries. Seems like a given for something like this, but you'd be surprised how many companies nickle and dime you on that kind of stuff.
But yeah, as noted in the comments below, the batteries are fidgety and hard to remove. I find this to be preferrable to ones that fall out too easy though. :)
I do agree that lidar is in its infancy. I feel like PDmovie is open to exploring updates and how to make it better. I saw in my notes that they are trying to figure out how to deal with more complex shots and that excited me
Great review! Have you used this LiDAR motor with 7Artisans Spectrum lens? I'm curious in a course of a sufficient torque for this stiff lenses. Also they have two different motors. One is marked as MINI and has less torque. I've figured out this is the best option for me but I'm worried about the torque.
According to PDMOVIE, there is a follow focus mode that can be locked onto the background, which can solve the problem of hand gestures interfering with the subject when taking selfies.
Priority focusing on thirds and ignoring the subject in the foreground is ensured by the installation location of the lidar unit and works well in scenes at short distances where it is needed. focusing in thirds at a long distance with objects in the foreground is very easy to implement in manual mode due to the large depth of field that appears on any lens as the focusing distance increases.
@@Ansonandco, This is not a point of view, but an almost everyday practice!) A very convenient lidar, I began to use it often in product photography with lenses without autofocus.
The only way I use this is with my 10mm and 15mm. Well calibrated, it gets amazing results. I feel its easier to peek focus on tighter lenses even though ive got great results with my Sirui 35mm anamorphic too.
I had the one without LIDAR. I ended up returning it because the battery solutions were not only bad, but the batteries themselves were difficult to remove from the system. I wish they would re-design then power supply system.
I am trying to figure out a way to rig the FP with this that mounts the live air 3 to the right side of the camera, close to the grip, reducing the overall size of the package as much as possible. My goal is to downsize the gimbal necessary as much as possible, and hopefully use something like the crane M2S while still running vintage or anamorphic lenses.
@@jeremymote238 there is a cage from a new company that has a bunch of 1/4 20s on the front right side of the cage, that would be a good option. And then use a threaded 15mm rod to screw into the cage to mount the live air 3 smart. The brand is XLCS designs

Hey there, random question but do you know if they sigma FP has some sort of IR cut or OLPF? I just tested some cheap Neewer ND filters, 4x5.65, even stacked two of them 3 and 4 stop for a total of 7 stops of ND and my blacks came out just fine.

May have to do a follow up, but I did set it up to replicate one of the scenes from a recent short film and it did not perform as well. It suffers from focusing on the closest object in the frame

Do you have any videos how to setup??
There should be a link in the description directly to PDmovies set up process. That is what I used to set up
I would like more than 5 profiles, and would like to make it harder to switch to autofocus when using it as manual focus control
It does seem a little finicky to switch between AF/MF
Just buy a second one and leave one channel empty.
This will give 9 lenses in memory and stable operation at short distances in manual mode.
this thing is awesome, one just has to do the calibration right :) works even on my small converted Sony RX0 with old cinema lenses :D

Are you able to “pause” the autofocus very easily? So in essence, center frame, grab focus, turn off, recompose?
