    During the two years we have been at war in #Ukraine, few changes seem as intense as the turnaround by French President Emmanuel Macron.
    From "no need to humiliate #Russia" and handing out carrots to Moscow to negotiate, the Gallic president is now raising the tone, even saying that he would be willing to send troops to Ukraine.
    The question is, what explains such a U-turn? Why is Macron now saying that France could go so far as to send soldiers to Ukraine itself?

    There needs to be more coverage of how France's recent losses in "French Africa" (assisted by Russia's Wagner mercenary group) clearly appear to be a major source of motivation as to why France is suddenly the first NATO country in over 2 years of fighting to seriously discuss sending troops to fight Russia in Ukraine. Seems like something worth discussing even if politicians aren't openly talking about it

Germany promised $17 Billion but it has yet to actually GIVE that amount in terms of military equipment. The French only gave $3 Billion its true it needs to increase...but every dollar of that $3Billion was a tangible piece of military kit.

    I agree with Macron push for strategic military autonomy. However, although I didn't make up my mind, I noticed some logical inconsistencies: Russia's production is at full capacity (they need more factoriesto build more and there is no indication they even started), their exports all but stopped, they are importing from wherever they can but still they can't have clear breakthrough in Ukraine and full air superiority? Why? They don't want to? At the same time they want to expand and fight NATO? In 10 years Putin is going to be 81 yo. Who knows who he is going to be if he is still around. Doesn't make sense..

Russia is dying anyway..economically and demographically. So why the hell not, right? China is also at its peak - so what better chances are if not now?

  • @JamesKerLindsay
    @JamesKerLindsay 2 місяці тому +133

    I am not usually a hawk, but I think that Macron is taking the right position. The wider implications for international peace and security of allowing Russia to win would be enormous. Allowing a country to win a war of aggression backed by nuclear threats would completely rewrite the rule book of international relations. (And before people start shouting about the West, I agree that it has also violated international law. But nothing on the scale or scope as we are seeing in Ukraine. The US never tried annexing part of Iraq and Afghanistan is still a sovereign state.) The question is not why France is pushing to step in if things get worse, it’s why other Western countries aren’t?
    Oh, and before anyone says that Western intervention would be madness as it would escalate the war into WWIII, why is NATO stepping to into defend Ukraine a dangerous escalation, but Russia’s invasion isn’t!? Let’s not lose sight of the real problem here. Again, we come back to the central point: allowing Russia to win a war of territorial expansion would have profound implications for the rest of the world.

      @@DacianRiderSo are some states in Europe. It's quite important for the 'laggers' in this respect to reconsider current approach and following suit ( at least to some extent).
      As painful as it is to witness Russia's aggression in Ukraine, the facts speak for themselves.
      The US is not willing to heavily commit to Ukraine's war effort. Ukraine is far from being self-sustainable at any level, including in terms of mobilizing manpower-this applies to both ability and willingness.
      Despite enormous resources allocated by the West to Ukraine, they are nowhere close to achieving anything close to victory, and they reject any reality based on straightforward reality on the ground and indisputable facts. They have no plan nor attempt to figure out alternative pathways to the one pursued currently.
      It is by no means beneficial for Ukraine and its future to engage in the delusion that the West is about to commit more resources, or to believe that Macron actually intends to follow through with actions instead of just talking, aimed solely to fulfill his own agenda. Sad, but that's how things are.

      There is no evidence whatsoever that Russia is looking to take over any country.
      In fact when the Soviet Union was dissolved in 1991, Russia was at its weakest and terribly poor economically.
      If Russia was going to become such a threat in future, why wait till Russia recovered economically and militarily , because NATO could have finished Russia off easily in the 1990s?
      Oh wait, if NATO countries would have got Russia finished in the 1990s they could not spread Russian fear that continues till today and with this very channel., if you cannot sell fear then you cannot sell NATO expansion and definitely you CANNOT sell WEAPONS.
      NATO expansion is a lucrative deal for defence contractors, each country is mandated to spend 3% of its GDP, follow the money and you get the truth.

Then it invaded/colonized Scotland, Ireland, Wells, Northern America, India, Africa, Australia. Over last 70 years, It sharply declined in military and real economy aspects. It is just that France (and the UK) has a nerfed export version to comply with Missile Technology Control Regime guidelines. The French one was developed as a result of a deal with the UAE (Black Shaheen variant, with a range up to 290 km). The UK, meanwhile, nerfed the missiles it sent to Ukraine down to a range of 250 km IIRC.
    And calling the French military an average-sized military, which would make undertaking such an endeavor alone difficult, is more pertinent than calling it an average military. If France has an "average military", then one might ask how many "above average" militaries there are in the world in regard to size, technology, training and experience.

    Seems that one president is speaking about the prestige of Europe without any point saying that 1 is equal with 3. Europe has nothing to link its prestige and security with the outcome from a local conflict. Seems that the year of 2014, February and the 8 years that passed till the Russian intervention in Ukraine was needed more attention from the ones that wanted to mediate. But, since the mediation was done just as a facade for the problem of the will of the Russian speakers from Ukraine after the 2014 coup d`etat from Kyiv, there is no need now to link the failures of diplomacy and the support of the regime in Kyiv with Europe`s prestige. Europe is more than its leaders and always the people are to be kept close, not prestige or ambitions. We also saw the ambitions of Blair and Clinton in Serbia and I don`t think that there`s much good to say about it. And, there is going to be peace after this conflict would be over. And, there is also a need not to adventurously push ahead with the connections between the EU`s prestige and security and the outcome of this conflict. None wants to make it hotter than really is. It seems also that none expected this to happen, but since the intricacies of the events that occurred since 2014 were not of importance for the EU leaders, then it is not fair to speak now about prestige or security as they are not intuitive by far

      As a reminder the US is Nato's leader, with such a leader who can trust Nato???
      Humiliation is always utterly improductive, and the a felt humiliation by the Russians in general and poutin in particular is what triggered this war in the first place.

    French is just salty on Russia's role in taking down France's neo-colonial empire in the Sahel, Africa. Russian troops were far closer to France during the Warsaw Pact era than they are the now in the Ukraine. They aren't a bigger threat "than they have ever before." The French care much more about the far more damaging loss of Niger, Mali etc. to their economy than the "looming threat to Moldova." Getting "tit for tat revenge" has sadly been a chief driver of French foreign policy for centuries. e.g. Haiti (for kicking then out), Britain (for defeating them in the 7 years war), Libya (for proposing a new currency to replace the CFA Franc in N.Africa) etc.

    • @Beremote
      @Beremote 2 місяці тому +14

      It appears you're prematurely assuming France's concerns lie solely with the situation in the Sahel. While indeed concerning for France, the potential fallout from Ukraine's defeat would reverberate globally, plunging Europe and the world into turmoil. Recent events in Ukraine, including forced conscription in the captured teritories and the utilization of thousands as mere canon fodder, signify a dire warning. If Ukraine succumbs, NATO could face a large conscripted force, triggering catastrophic consequences akin to a new world war.
      Intelligence forecasts suggest 2026 as a pivotal year, with China potentially aligning against Western powers. Iran and North Korea might join this coalition, amplifying the threat. The ramifications are grave:
      North Korea's aggression could ignite a full-scale conflict with South Korea.
      China may target Taiwan, Vietnam, and the Philippines, escalating regional tensions.
      Russia, bolstered by captured Ukrainian and Belarusian forces, could set sights on the Baltics, marshaling a force exceeding two million soldiers.
      The timing of Putin's actions may seem puzzling, but demographic shifts in both Russia and China likely spur their assertiveness.
      All the military intelligence is clear keep Ukraine free from the Russians at all cost. France had the wrong intelligence at the beginning even firing the head of the DGSE as Putin was lying to Macron and the French DGSE wasn't able to give Macron what other countries like the US and UK knew.
