The Panzerkampfwagen IV was designed as the Versuchs-Kraftfahrzeug 622 in 1934 and went into production in 1937, and would fit the the short barrel 75 mm gun, and this would stay the same for the Ausf. A to F. It would be a a support tank to be used to handle anti-tank guns and fortifications, it would work alongside the more numerable Panzer III in Panzer Divisions, but would changes it's roll in the later part of the war. The Panzer IV Ausf.A production started in 1937 and ended in June 1938, it was similar to the B.W.I Prototype and production would stop after 35 vehicles had been completed, the Ausf.B went into production 1938 which had several changes to the A, with more frontal armour without a ball mount for the MG-34 machine gun, a new 300hp Maybach HL-120TR engine, transmission, single-piece hatches and commander’s cupola. The Panzer IV Ausf.C production started in 1938 and would end in 1939 with 134 produced. The A and B almost didn't have any external differences and it only had a improved modified engine, engine mounts, new turret ring and armored sleeve mount around the machine gun barrel.

My dad served with the 29th U.S. Infantry Division in WW2, and when the war in Europe ended, his unit was part of the Army of Occupation, stationed in Bremerhaven. As an officer, he was part of the new military government and he lived in the old Naval Barracks in that city. Something he saw which has NEVER been reported in any history books that I know of...was the experimentation, and possible limited deployment of Pxkw IvJ's with a small "shelf" on the rear holding some kind of coal furnace/convertor used to fuel the tank. I have seen several pictures of German buses with this exact same arrangement so I know it was in use...but dad, ( the most honest man I ever knew) told me he was absolutely sure of this also being on tanks which he himself had seen. During the Korean War, he served as a Regimental S2 (intel) officer in the 45th Division...and his work was considered so good he was offered a position of commanding the new Intel school being opened in Japan for the Army, (which he declined to go home to his family.) He served at camp Atterbury and helped with it's closure after the Korean War. Against four or five medium tanks it must expose the sides eventually. Don't let movies like fury fool you.
My favorite Panzer IV H, was the best of the series, originally meant for infantry support, it evolved to take on, Allied tanks the Panzer IV H, was the most numerous German Panzer, of World War 2!

What difference would it have made if the German arms industry mass-produced and improved the PzIV, rather then waste resources on some of the hair-brained super tanks> I count both the Panther and Tiger as legit tanks, but the rest of the projects were foolhardy. Crank out 25k of these IV's with improved/sloped armour and does Germany win in the East? Or were there just too many Ivans?
Would Germany been better served if instead of the factories given to the Tiger B, the Jagdtiger and even the Jagdpanther Germany had allocated them to the Pzkw IV? Would the extra 2000-2500 more Pzkw IV produced in place of these Titans been useful in 1944 ?
Germany didn't have the sources and the capability to mass produce the Panzer IV. The Panzer IV was also already fever limited with the Ausf H version.
No it was not. As a tank it was better than the Sherman & Cromwell with the 75mm, equal to the Sherman with the 76mm and the T-34/76. It was found only slightly wanting against the T-34/85. Yes it was inferior to the IS series or the SU/ISU models but then the Pzkw V would be available to take them on. I would say 2500 more Pzkw IV in 1944 would have hurt the Russians hard.
@@peterasp1968 Don't know for who this is meant for, but you're only comparing the guns, because the later Panzer IV's Late G H and specially the J had numerous problems with weight and mobility, because all of the new modifications strained the chassis, engine and gearbox. The primitive leaf-spring suspension made it a shaky ride, this affected the crew, but also the accurate aiming of the main gun. The Finnish called it the "Ravistin" ("Shaker"). But that wasn't the only problem, the armour wasn't from great quality on later models, making it crack and break. This was all because of Allied bombings, which halted production and all plates which should have been face-hardened for the Panzer IV were instead made with rolled homogeneous armour plate.
@@PanzerInsight Yes, these are points which I did not consider. But the quality issue of armour- did it not affect all production from 1943 onwards including the Tiger, Panther and their Jagd version? Though being the most numerous AFV it would be most obvious on the Pzkw IV. But the suspension issue would be impossible to resolve mid-war. The Finnish nickname was something new for me.
So, the Panzer crews simply rode on top of their Panzers when not in combat? I need to be sure. I'm writing a novel about Operation Barbarossa and I want it really accurate.
People ignore the potencial of the panzer 4. With some ubgrades it would have become just as good as any other medium tank of the time. Not like it wasn r good. Also it didn t cost half your life savings like a tiger or panther...
The tried to upgraded it and it didn't really work, so they eventually started with the Ausf. J in an attempt to make it lighter and cheaper and to try to make it into a production tank, but it wasn't good enough.
@@PanzerInsight 99.9% sure that's a Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. J (late) or Ausf. L in the foreground, with a Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. E or earlier in the background, based on silhouette.
Europe is more united than ever before, so quite the contrary. Of course there are elements that are opposing unification, but that's part of the process.
A beautiful Tank that was able to destroy most of the Tanks exept JS2 and M26 and even those Tanks could been out of action in close combat when they fought against PZ IVs with the long L48 gun!!Not the best WW2 Tank-That was the Panther but stiil able to defend Germany even trough allied air superiority!!!
Panzer IV was outdated by 1944 and the Panther was a piece of junk that had numerous problems, the best tank of the war was the M26 and after that the Sherman tank.
@@teotselek1536 and historical fact say different, Shermans took many loses not because of weak armor but because they were going against a defending army, and you needed tripple the man power to take a defensive point. And most allied acounts couldn't tell the difference between a Panzer III IV or Tiger so many reports are false. Abd they never used any so called superior German tanks after the war, because in reality they were garbage. The Sherman and M26 were used all over and the M26 proved to be one of the deadliest tanks of the Korean War.
@@thundercheck3691 After the war they didn't exist so many German tanks to been used but they saw service with some armies!! First the captured Panthers saw service with the red army to borders with China until 1970!! Bulgaria used many PzIVs and Panthers also until 1980! Turkish army used some PZ IVs as well and Hispanic army used those PZ IV with the long 48 Barrel and list goes to Syrian Arab army which used those Tank to Golan heights-and they didn't aloud any SuperSherman armed with the 90mm gun to get closer!! That's why Israelis used Centurions to take the hill!Of course there's a myth that the last German tank was destroyed by a Sherman and maybe this happened-but after the capture of the Golan heights!!No as for the American losses I could agree with you if I forget the thing that we are in 1944and the German industry is having serious problems caused by the allied air bombing ant second the majority of their tanks was fighting to the eastern front!!And I am not saying that Sherman was good only for an iron coffin -infact when they upguned it with the long 76mm it became better than the PZIV but it was still far to fight Panther on one to one tank battle!!
@@teotselek1536 i have no idea about the Soviets using these garbage tanks for there army when they had a lot better tanks, but for these other countries, they pretty used them because they didn't had any choice, these were poor countries. In Bulgaria they used, StuGs, Panzers and Jagdpanzers, as a last resort because of economic problems and they were so terrible they eventually all burried them as bunkers. The French also used Panthers after the war and they were terrible, they also used Maybach engines in the ARL project and it almost got the project canceled, because of the breakdowns. People are just so extremely blinded by propaganda from both sides, that these German machines were so superior, but when you look closer it all falls apart.
It was amazing improvements since 1918.😮 How did German develop body, engine, guns, banaculer, interior ergonomics and tactics under Allied servailance? I almost forgot fashioned uniforms.😮😮😮😮😮 (Nazi are bad guys.)
@Gamer Channel 1) the tanks are pz4 and 38T. fits for the hungarian armoured div on the Don in 1942. 2)the soldiers entering the house are not German. no boots or gas mask canisters. and the officer with the mp40 has a leather jacket, fairly common for hungarian officers 3) the helmets are Hungarian M38 (copies of the german) luckily at 30:38 the back of a helmet right in the foreground. there is a horizontal thing, thats a carrying hook oh and watch from 55:05.some nice shots of hungarian uniforms there, note the pockets
@Gamer Channel actually theres another couple of minutes of Hungarian footage. from 31:58 you can see panzer 4s with really clear Hungarian crosses and number plates
the true workhorse of the armor ...but ...then the rains came and the Japanese weren't the only ones that 'woke a sleeping giant'...had to be a rude shock when they came across the T-34...if I'm not mistaken the Sherman was designed to counter the Pz IV...
The Sherman wasn't specifically designed to counter the Panzerkampfwagen IV but it was intended to fight both as infantry support vehicle and counter tanks in it's class (which, in Germany's case, would indeed be the IV). The Sherman's design was however ordered based on the overall performance of the Panzerkampfwagen III and IV in Europe (Poland, low countries & France) so in a matter of speaking, it was the US answer to the IV.

We seriously need these at Dover today asap all armour welcome, No need to apply.

Deutsche Technik die Zeiten sind vorbei
What difference would it have made if the German arms industry mass-produced and improved the PzIV, rather then waste resources on some of the hair-brained super tanks> I count both the Panther and Tiger as legit tanks, but the rest of the projects were foolhardy. Crank out 25k of these IV's with improved/sloped armour and does Germany win in the East? Or were there just too many Ivans?
Wouldn't have done anything. No need for extra tanks when you don't have the men to crew them.
Ну, может быть, упирались бы дольше...
Думаю, зря Гудериана повернули на юг..

немецкий армия воевал два фронта американцам и ссср. и сила нехватало.я читаю всех немецких армию героем.мне очень нравится их формой и техники.
Would Germany been better served if instead of the factories given to the Tiger B, the Jagdtiger and even the Jagdpanther Germany had allocated them to the Pzkw IV? Would the extra 2000-2500 more Pzkw IV produced in place of these Titans been useful in 1944 ?
Panzer IV was outdated and already overweight with the Ausf H. It was pretty much useless in 1944.
Panzer lV Ausf.H: good
Panzer lV Ausf.J:Poor(because of downfall of german third Empire..)
What are the 2 tanks at 22:05? The guns are too long and too short to be any kind of gun ive seen. Congrats on 10k subs btw c:
Looks like a pz iii with a 5cm main gun and in the background a late pz iii n with a short 75mm gun used as a close support tank
Thank you 👍 and the front one is a Panzer III, the back one looks like a Panzer IV but it's hard to tell for sure.
@@PanzerInsight 99.9% sure that's a Panzerkampfwagen III Ausf. J (late) or Ausf. L in the foreground, with a Panzerkampfwagen IV Ausf. E or earlier in the background, based on silhouette.
Die lange Kanone hätte von Anfang an mit 7.5 cm als Waffe sein müssen.
ww1 and ww2 destroyed all of Europe forever .
3/21/20 - Europeans still divided
@Big Bill O'Reilly Billy talk to someone in person today
Europe is more united than ever before, so quite the contrary. Of course there are elements that are opposing unification, but that's part of the process.
My warthunder vehicle
Hmm delicius
A beautiful Tank that was able to destroy most of the Tanks exept JS2 and M26 and even those Tanks could been out of action in close combat when they fought against PZ IVs with the long L48 gun!!Not the best WW2 Tank-That was the Panther but stiil able to defend Germany even trough allied air superiority!!!
Panzer IV was outdated by 1944 and the Panther was a piece of junk that had numerous problems, the best tank of the war was the M26 and after that the Sherman tank.
Well the allies who fought the war they disagree with you but on the other hand what do they know? They just fought this God damn war.....

@ 19:34 doing decorations ?
Christmas.
It was amazing improvements since 1918.😮 How did German develop body, engine, guns, banaculer, interior ergonomics and tactics under Allied servailance? I almost forgot fashioned uniforms.😮😮😮😮😮 (Nazi are bad guys.)
They pretty much had outdated tanks in the beginning and labeled them as tractors.
They did it in Russia.
those are definitely Hungarians between 30:00 and 31:00
@Gamer Channel 1) the tanks are pz4 and 38T. fits for the hungarian armoured div on the Don in 1942.
2)the soldiers entering the house are not German. no boots or gas mask canisters. and the officer with the mp40 has a leather jacket, fairly common for hungarian officers
3) the helmets are Hungarian M38 (copies of the german) luckily at 30:38 the back of a helmet right in the foreground. there is a horizontal thing, thats a carrying hook
oh and watch from 55:05.some nice shots of hungarian uniforms there, note the pockets
@Gamer Channel actually theres another couple of minutes of Hungarian footage. from 31:58 you can see panzer 4s with really clear Hungarian crosses and number plates
They are indeed Hungarian soldiers, goodeye.
Why does such good footage of history always have to be ruined with music.

Good times....
the true workhorse of the armor ...but ...then the rains came and the Japanese weren't the only ones that 'woke a sleeping giant'...had to be a rude shock when they came across the T-34...if I'm not mistaken the Sherman was designed to counter the Pz IV...
