That's how i learned to drive a truck, my dad would stop out in the middle of nowwhere and id get behind the wheel. If more cdl holders learned this way from truckers like you, be a lot more respectable drivers around.
You made a memory. I'm 61, and I still remember the first time my Dad let me drive. If he really wants to drive someday, I know you will support him. That's what Dad's do.
I Learned to Drive on a farm in a 3-speed Studebaker pickup truck 3 speed model A Ford dump truck and various tractors pulling hay trailers and manure spreaders. I drove big trucks for 32 years everything from flatbeds and lumber, heavy equipment and gasoline. The best way for your son to learn is with you teaching him In First Class. I'm 82 years old now & still miss driving. Good luck & best wishes.
@gordonoates6998 Same here. 1969 Chevy pickup. 3 in the tree. Tractors were a lot smaller back then. We probably broke a few things over the years, but that s how you learn.
Schmidt that was so cool to see little Bud's eyes light up when he let the clutch out and fed fuel to that cat. I started out in a 53 Ford pickup in the back of my Father's service station and garage.... I was 8 yrs old, lol
Great video. Back in the 70s I started driving with my dad at 14 . By the time I was 16 I would team drive with him in the summer. Still trucking. Love the time I spent with my dad back then . Making memories is what it's all about.
That is pretty cool Kurt, that brings back memories of how I learned to drive a truck. My old man did the same thing. Little Bud will always remember this time with you. Little Bud is on top of the world at this moment behind the wheel of the truck. Maybe you just planted a seed and down the road, he may be the next trucking with Schmidt Star. Thanks for sharing this video.
My Dad taught me to drive a stick on the column at 13yrs old in a shopping lot on a Sunday (stores were closed on Sundays back then!). I did get a CDL much later - age 27? - . Drove with that CDL for a Very short time and found I wished I had a Dad or friend who was in the business to teach me what they didn't teach in the CDL school. Was a thrill to see you and Troy doing what you did. Brought back fabulous memories or 60 years ago. Thank you.
I remember the day i was thrown into the big seat. I was 14, truck was a 76 R model Mack, location was the Nez Perce national forrest in Idaho, a load of logs on a mountain road. I about pooped. Loved every second of that 30 minutes. I sure miss my pop. Thank you !!
Bringing back the memories of me and my grandfather teaching me how to drive a semi truck and my uncle letting me drive his mack cabover back in the 70s great video and Troy was doing great and God bless from GA and stay safe
Schmidt your a very cool dad,I remember those times with dad. He's been gone 50 years know but still get to remember !! Bud will that time with you forever!! All of you Schmidt's stay safe,we will see you next time👌👍🦃🤗
My mom taught me to drive a stick shift in a Buick Opal entirely to many years ago. I had a 25 year career in nursing. 1.5 years ago I got my CDL-A and am loving the career change. No auto restriction but I do drive an automatic. I believe Troy needs to learn all the finer aspects of truckin. He seems to absolutely love it. That smile on his face is priceless. You are doing him a favor by having him with you.
his smile said it all! btw I went to school because I didn’t have a truck to learn on and I turned out ok, Troy would too he’s got your DNA and you to help him along the way
I was a year younger than Troy when my dad did the same to me. It was a 1989 K100 cabover with a 9 speed. Had to look pretty comical with the old man at 6’2” sitting on the doghouse teaching a squatty chubby 13 year old how to drive a K Whopper and float gears. Good on you sir. I’ll never forget that day and I’m sure Troy won’t either.
Hi Kurt & Troy. This vlog made me cry happy tears. My dad drove truck & it just took me back 2 a simpler time. Brought back great memories. Thank you. I loved seeing that grin on little buds face. Great job, kiddo. Your dad is not only a great dad but a great teacher. The apple doesn't fall to far from the tree. You are going 2 have those haters, unfortunately. They don't understand that you are teaching your son what you know. Who better to teach him. He may or may not follow in your footsteps. The trucking industry is in rough shape. I personally want to thank you & all those who get our goods to us daily. It's not an easy task in todays world. I could see Troy being a truck driver. But time will tell. I look forward to your future vlogs this summer. I truly appreciate all you do. I truly love watching your vlogs. I am still behind. 😉👍🏼 Keep on truckin' We'll keep on truckin with Schmid. God's blessings today & always. 🙏I love you guys!!❤
Atta way on the dirtbike. I started in 1969 at age 7. Raced for parts of 35 years, retiring at 50. I’m now 60 and even though I no longer compete, I still enjoy track days and jumping over people half my age. It’s a great hobby that I’ve made life-long friends with.
I’m 42 and I learned the same way. Best way to teach them, hat tip sir! Did the same thing with my boys and currently am with my 5 year old granddaughter.
This video bring back a huge memory of mine when i was 14 i got to drive my first truck it was kw T2000 pulling a 53 foot van from Michigan to Illinois and from that day on I had it in my blood to drive Bud will never forget when u did this with him u are an awesome Dad Kurt keep teaching him your self 💯 😊
Kurt thanks for taking us along with Troy's ride in First Class. He has done more than most Americans will ever do. I bet he was beaming from ear to ear. You have a fine young man as a son. Be proud. You both deserve it.
My dad used to give me his rig on the side roads pulling a b train full of lumber in the 80s. I miss him so much 😢 love the memories i have with him, i dont think a day has passed that he didnt cross my mind. I've been Driving big rigs for 27 years now and love every minute of it and now my 5 year old is my co driver sometimes 😂
What a cool video. I remember years ago I left my son drive in a lot in Wisconsin. Your right you learn so much more hands on and not at a school . Thank you for bringing back that memory it made my day
You know you put the fire into Troy for a rig of his own. My first time with my father teaching me was in a 6 cylinder station wagon on a sloped gravel driveway. Needless to say I did not do well. He didn't give up on me and taught me with the company car. I thought it very trusting of my Dad to let me drive the company car. You've shown you have tremendous trust in your son. He many consider being a trucker, but then he may go in an entirely different direction, but the best thing is you showed him this side.
Times have changed. Dirt bikes cost alot these days. Subway is good but ridiculously over priced. Reminds me of the Alan Jackson song "when daddy let me drive" making memories. U guys hang in there. Oh way to go Troy !
You did the exact same thing as my dad did to me when I was 12! he told me to jump up in the seat and taught me the basics and told me to drive across the yard to pick up trailers! Needless to say 4.3 Million Miles later and 34 yrs behind the wheel later, I retired from the industry! Way to go Troy! Keep On Truckin'!😉
I wish I had had someone teach me to drive. Heck, I wish I had started driving years ago. Troy sure looked like he was enjoying himself! Good job dadding Kurt!
Hi Kurt i work for a trucking company. I was 14 and I would travel to the veg market to help unload. It was all done by had those days. No folk life. I was not much into the dark if you get my drift. Any they fill my head of ghost story for weeks one night I was told it's time to learn to driven a truck. And if i wasn't going to i had to get put and walk ten miles home. I learnt to drive a truck. Apart from my wedding and the broth of my daughter. I can't think of a greater feeling then learning to drive a simi truck. Your a great dad letting him learn. Take care stay safe 👍👌
Troy will definitely never forget that moment. I say let him get as much seat time as possible. But teach him the pros and cons of trucking. It doesn't hurt to have many trades as possible in life in case one fails you have one to fall back on.
I remember the first time a friend of mine handed me the wheel and I got to drive a big rig - I’ll never forget it. And once it’s in your system, it never really gets out. Great video Kurt. Stay safe.
Schooling can’t give him the training he will get from you. The little tricks and tips that come from time behind the wheel are much more valuable. Thanks for sharing and bringing us along, keep up the great work!
Driving your first car is something youll never forget. Driving your first truck is same and much more impressive. And if it was your dad teaching you how to youll never forget your dad and youll allways remember this day.
That brought back some wonderful memories of the first time I sat behind the wheel of Dad's 1969 twin stick R model Mack as a teenager. Your Dad skills get two thumbs-up from me.
Yep, that’s how the best drivers learn. I wish I had that available to me when I started 23 years ago . I don’t think school is good for anything besides getting your license, that is it. Once you get in a truck that is when you really learn usually by mistakes unfortunately.
I agree with your assessment of the trucking industry; just wait until the nationwide 65 mph speed limit for trucks is enacted. Do your best to convince the young lad to learn a trade. The country will always need electricians, plumbers and automotive/truck "technicians" (aka mechanics).
Look at Troy’s grin! ❤️👍 Totally worth the memory your making! Excellent job, Dad❤️❤️❤️ My uncle showed me how to drive when I was 12. I had my CDL at 18. I’m proud of you Kurt, you make us proud to be drivers.
OUTSTANDING. Good on you Kurt-you Sir are a true Father. My Dad also did somewhat the same for me at that wee age-and now in my semi retirement after 30 years in aviation & having earned my CDL in 1994 & kept it-now I find myself teaching others the correct way to drive a semi & achieve their CDL. Disregard Karen's absolute rotten to the core attitude-Troy is a very lucky young man to have a fine role model in you. Very lucky indeed. And he gets to experience a true hood-took me many years to peer over that magnificent appendage of a W900 K-whopper. They truly do have fine road manners.
You just made one of the epic memories he will have, and until he teaches his own son the sentimental feelings you are having will be understood 😊🥰 love this video Kurt, one of many that are now my favorite 😊👍🦮🐕🦺🐕🦺
Nice driving 'Slim'! Great having your father having the confidence and patience to get you started, but you need to start somewhere! Float shifting will come eventually, but until then, grind 'em on occasion until you get the hang of it. My first bike was a Yamaha DT-175 - a 2 stroker and ran like a banshee. Right now, I've got a '17 Kawasaki KLR 650 - a 4 stroker - and it gets the job done. And it's one of the last of the carbureted models, and now they're all EFI.
O-H-I-O Porter greetings 🇺🇸 The times you have with Troy & the training you give him are IRREPLACEABLE! He doesn’t have to become a trucker, but knowing how to drive a big rig can help him in many other areas in life! I started driving my brother’s cabover Marmon at 13 & I fell in love with it. It was my 1st cabover as well. I was driving wreckers & conventionals at 7. I watched dad & my brother drive & it gave me the desire to drive earlier in my childhood. My dad was old school in that he wanted his boys to drive early & that we did! I’ve been a truck lover ever since! He was beaming from ear to ear…I felt the same way back then. What a trip back in time for me!! Do all the buses have the spoilers on the back out there?! It was quite unusual to see but very practical in a way. Does it really help in any way? CDL college…that has an unusual sound to it! I don’t like it at all! You just need some down to earth good hands on training! Good stuff! Keep it coming & don’t forget to show us! Blessings! 🥰😎✌️
The smile on buds face ,,priceless. …I got my cdl after going to community college..3000.00 they took us out on the road day one after 8 weeks class room, then 8 weeks driving the only thing we did in the parking lot was backing and parking…and practicing for to the dot for the license that was 2001. 😊
Gotta love that, A Karen right in the first comment. LOL. Kurt, Troy has the same grin as I did learning how to drive at the age of 12. I loved every minute of it. Go to drive out to my grandparents place, it was about a 30 min drive from our house to theirs. Looks like there is going to be a new driver for the industry :). Safe travels guys :)
Well done Bud, ya gotta start somewhere. Kurt you are 100% correct on the industry, there will always be a need for truck drivers, but not like how you and I grew up knowing it. Bud is still young and has alot of time to figure it out.
Rather forget about worrying about others and what they think it is your life it is your gifting is your time with your boy we love you for showing it. We love you for taking the time to teach your son how to do work and how to drive truck not many fathers do that these days I love you buddy.
My grandfather was long retired from trucking when he taught me how to drive. He did however make me drive with an empty boat trailer for the first two weeks I had my temps. He said that once I learned how to drive with a trailer I could drive anything. He was pretty much correct.
That’s the way I Learned to drive a truck. Dad sat and didn’t say much till I missed a gear then he corrected me. Of course back then we just had 5 speed with a two speed behind it. Far different than th the 5 and 4 a few years later. Great training for him. Hope your insurance guy didn’t watch that. Good job dad. Havagudun and stay safe.
Two WORDS Kurt You the man... Troy your one lucky falla ... Tell show do... Tell them how Show them how let them do it... Can't learn if you don't do..... Top job to you both... There should be more of this in the world... My Dad got me as a eleven year old on his Cat D8 and made me drive it out of the bush that thing had a 14 foot bull blade which was wider than the track out
That was great to see how happy Troy look while driving teach them when young and maybe when they start driving it will be better for like when trucking was a great job GOD BLESS
Awesome Dude. I started the same way .. record it Hero .. at 14 yrs old dad made me climb Jellico Mtn here in Tennessee, I-75 Ky line.. Overloaded Covered Wagon in our 1983 359 Peterbilt , then @ 19 in 94 l' started running team with him... Way To Go Troy.... Heck Yeah Brother,,, Peace ✌️ Love 💚 and 18 Wheelz to ya Bud... Cleveland Tenn waivin a Hand ✋️
Yep my dad and Grandpa taught me. Then i took dads Brand New 1997 W-9 Studio with only 500 miles on it to take my test . Just like first Class except 2 peace windshield .
What great memories to make with your boy and something he will always remember and hold dear is those memories with dad and driving First Class. My experience is a little backwards from troy and yours. It was I that took my dad for his first ride in a rig and also let him drive his first rig.Memorues we both hold dear to.Hopefully I can share the same with my son.Awesome video, and thanks for letting us be a part of it! Keep the rubber side down, drop a gear and hammer down!
Nice Kurt Yup I learned truck driving after school at 9 years of age driving Dad's trucks to the Fuel pumps in the yard and checking oil etc. Got my Chauffers' license at 18 with Dad's teaching. Rolled that into my CDL when the Gov. changed the rules. 60 years later I still hold my CDL. Your right The Gov. is tanking the trucking industry in favor of a handful of Mega Carriers. Tom
Keep teaching Kurt. That's the only way he will learn it right. Schools are a joke. If it wasn't for good Dad's 1/2 the guys out there wouldn't be truckers.❤
Hi Kurt & Lil Bud I did the same thing with my kids. You will never forget it. If lil bud can driver the ford he sure can drive that Kenworth. Keep up the good work .
Hey Kurt and Bud, good to see you showing your boy the beginnings of truck driving. I just finished trucking school, now I'm waiting to go to the DMV for my driving and inspection tests 😢 can't believe i had to pay 2 grand to be certified to do what I've done for 26 years already. It's a total scam, when shifting gears its mandatory you double clutch or it's an automatic fail. I stopped driving 8 years ago to operate heavy machinery then I decided to go back to trucking studied and passed all 7 tests in one day for all the endorsements thinking I had my license in hand only to discover I had to go to school. I learned how to drive trucks at a very young age here in the streets and freeways in southern California. Wish you and all your loved one's the best, God bless.
When I got my combo license I stop at the DMV got the booklet sat in my truck about an hour going overs the regs went in took the test passed got the paperwork for my boss to sign , went back to DMV the next day received my combo license. I did have to retest when the new systen class A,B, or C . Alot different now days.
I went to a driving school because if i wanted to drive a truck that was the only way i could learn. My father had already retired and sold his truck by the time i was old enough. 33 years ago when i got my CDL I heard how bad the drivers were that were coming out of the schools. Every time I heard that i just shook my head because thedrivers that came out of the school I went to weren't like that. I think it completely depends on the school you go to and whether or not it is supported by a big company or not. The one i went to wasn't it was a Community College. I paid my tuition out of my own pocket. Never had any complaints about my driving and no accidents in the 13 years i drove
Love you have your kids names on the cab. I live next to a small super market and now and again, the guy delivering the groceries has his kids PAINTED on the side of his truck. I'll try and get a picture next time I see him. Love the smile on Troys face! :)
Back in the day it was considered part of growing up to be taught to drive , big truck or otherwise. You go guy's, I believe someone taught young will be a better driver than any store bought stunt driver.
Kirk it is cool showing your son how to drive all types of vehicles including a semi. My dad did the same back in the 80's except the semi he didn't have his own truck.
Does that kid have any idea how cool and lucky he is that he has the opportunity to learn how to correctly drive a real!!! A REAL!! semi truck!! Man awesome!!! And yes by him yz125!!!! Or yz250!!! And get yourself a 450!!!!
I think it is Awesome. I learned to drive in a very rough Pasture, with about 200 head of cows to dodge :) Troy did good for his first time and you can see he was very happy getting to drive the truck like his Dad!
Kurt, If things get a little tight, I am sure you would be able to make a monster movie and make a killing. lol. The movie, "The thing that ate Mapleton".
Have a 1975 Kawasaki f5 for sale needs carb kit put in it. Have title for it and all lights are on it. Does not have battery in to know what lights work. Would be street legal. Super nice, all original. I’m just south of Topeka if you are interested in looking at it.
If remember right , it says Schmidt family trucking on the side of the first class. I starting driving truck when i was 16, just started my 53 th year driving, in April
That's how i learned to drive a truck, my dad would stop out in the middle of nowwhere and id get behind the wheel. If more cdl holders learned this way from truckers like you, be a lot more respectable drivers around.

AGREE I FOLLOW HIM TOO HE IS A WONDERFUL DAD GREAT MAN !

The wonderful father/son things you CAN do in Iowa!. Miss living in that state. Born and raised in Spencer.

Teach-em young. Everything they learn is a bonus because you never know what way the world will turn for him.
I think that is so cool you let Troy drive first class, you are a great dad!!!
I started driving 7 years ago I'm 26 and started out with a 1986 Peterbilt 8v71 Detroit 10 speed hauling bark mulch all around the east coast
That brought back some wonderful memories of the first time I sat behind the wheel of Dad's 1969 twin stick R model Mack as a teenager. Your Dad skills get two thumbs-up from me.

My dad taught me before I was of age to drive a truck. Awesome job Troy 🤠
Buy Troy a little fixer upper (25k pre emission) and add him to the family bizz :) 2 Maroon and Grey trucks would look great rolling together
Well there you go Kurt I thought this day may come like father like son❤
Awesome Dude. I started the same way .. record it Hero .. at 14 yrs old dad made me climb Jellico Mtn here in Tennessee, I-75 Ky line.. Overloaded Covered Wagon in our 1983 359 Peterbilt , then @ 19 in 94 l' started running team with him... Way To Go Troy.... Heck Yeah Brother,,, Peace ✌️ Love 💚 and 18 Wheelz to ya Bud... Cleveland Tenn waivin a Hand ✋️
Always like seeing all those old buildings and stores in town that is so cool.
Yep my dad and Grandpa taught me. Then i took dads Brand New 1997 W-9 Studio with only 500 miles on it to take my test
. Just like first Class except 2 peace windshield .
Loved Troy getting a little taste of driving "First Class".
Nice Kurt
Yup I learned truck driving after school at 9 years of age driving Dad's trucks to the Fuel pumps in the yard and checking oil etc.
What a smile u put on troys face😊 awesome dad
Hi Kurt & Lil Bud
I did the same thing with my kids. You will never forget it. If lil bud can driver the ford he sure can drive that Kenworth. Keep up the good work .
Awesome Kurt and good job little bud. That is priceless time with your old man.
Best moments on the channel. His smile said everything. Congrats Bud..
I learned to drive trk in a 54 KW with a 250 Cummings with a 4&5 back in late 70"s
Great job. I can’t wait till I can teach mine to drive our big truck
Learned on my own as a kid… now being 64, retired mechanic/ Cdl , not as easy as it looks, back then…
Kirk it is cool showing your son how to drive all types of vehicles including a semi. My dad did the same back in the 80's except the semi he didn't have his own truck.
Nice what a great opportunity for that young man you couldn't have wipe that smile off his face nice job
You couldn't pry that smile off his face with a crowbar! Great Job Troy! Great job dad!
Does that kid have any idea how cool and lucky he is that he has the opportunity to learn how to correctly drive a real!!! A REAL!! semi truck!! Man awesome!!! And yes by him yz125!!!! Or yz250!!! And get yourself a 450!!!!
I remember those days my daddy taught me to drive 1964 B61 Mack 2 Stick
I think it is Awesome. I learned to drive in a very rough Pasture, with about 200 head of cows to dodge :) Troy did good for his first time and you can see he was very happy getting to drive the truck like his Dad!
Great video. I hung my keys up last December. The industry is going to hell. I'm old school 27 years. It would be nice if it could be great again.
I couldn’t agree more….but I’m 55 and have to keep at it a while longer…..started driving when I was 20
Kurt, If things get a little tight, I am sure you would be able to make a monster movie and make a killing. lol. The movie, "The thing that ate Mapleton".
My first dirt bike was a Sears mo-ped, lol. Good job Bud! Kurt, you`re the man!
How lucky is he to get to drive a big truck at his age! I’m 56 and haven’t been able to drive one yet, or even ride in a big truck. I’m so jealous!
Wow the boy did good. You are an awesome dad for letting hi. Drive first class.just a awesome dad .From a new subscriber
I thought this was GREAT!! Good job Troy!
