You can't go wrong learning the major scale in C up and down the neck first. Then you can play in any key with these basic patterns, five patterns really starting with all the different fingers on the 6th and 5th strings. Every scale is contained within the major scales.
My approach is to start with F - since that will allow me to use the entire fretboard of the classical acoustic guitar from nut to body (including open strings). I started with F major pentatonic, then noticed that with the addition of a couple more notes I was still in key - only to realize that there was F major staring me in the face! Then I started moving the root note on the 6th string to change keys....and then I learnt about the relative minor and so on... EVERYTHING Andrew mentioned in the video hit home for me!!
@@christianhume7618 Cool, haven't worked out what you're saying, but in C major you start with your 3rd finger on the C note 3rd fret 5th string and play the scale using all the open strings as part of the scale. This pattern repeats at the 12th fret, obviously, but no open strings of course. Then between the first open pattern and the 12th fret you have four other patterns which you can link together to form one gigantic pattern covering the entire neck. All the natural notes. Cool stuff. BTW, my first guitar teacher, Derek Traffacanti, was a GIT grad and that's how he taught me. As a beginner it took me a year to get all that under my fingers. Regards
O M G 😯 !!! Thank You 🙏 Thank You 🙏 Thank You !!! Watched the vid a couple times. Practiced the Shape for about 10 minutes (Seeing it as 2 positions was very helpful for my thinking/visualizing it on the fretboard) Then I recorded a 5 minute backing track just using the voice recorder on my iPhone (playing a progression of C A F G over and over) Playing that recording back and exploring the Pattern you taught over it was so EASY !!! Dude - I'm finally soloing and not sounding completely clueless 😱 Again - THANK YOU 🙏 I'm getting your Handouts E-book ASAP.
It's a very good video but the "pattern" is just a subset of the C major pentatonic scale. I know the major and minor pentatonic scales in all 5 positions. The pattern is just a portion of position 1 and position 2 of the major pentatonic scale. I am working on learning all the notes by number in the major pentatonic. Then I'll know which notes in the pattern (or scale) are the root (1), or the 4th or 5th notes which would sound good over the 4th or 5th chord respectively. It is still worthwhile to learn the major scale and the numeric note within the scale. It seems trendy right now in guitar youtube land to put out videos and teach solos without stressing scales or even saying scales are bad. But, I think all the great guitarists know their scales and then compose a solo with a subset of the scale.
Man, what blew my mind was that I looked at the shape and immediately said to myself, wait... thats the key of A, which I've been fiddling around with for a couple of weeks now. Then when your backing track kicked in it clicked that it only matters what root note you "highlight". Since I've already memorized the A pentatonic through the 12 frets, I now am starting to understand the related scales. I'm not kidding, this video made it all click in my head. For what it's worth, thank you!
I think mine is a somewhat primitive attitude when it comes to soloing - after a lifetime of self taught guitar. I am aware of scales and progressions. However when I solo it's sort of instinctive. I complained once to another player ''I don't know what I'm doing - even though it's working.'' He said ''You do know. But more subconsciously than you realize.'' I played along with you more or less straight away - not boasting here but still trying to be more aware of what I'm doing as, although I played along fine, I still just did it rather than thought about it and part of me doesn't like that. :) I sort of sing along in my head and come up with something.
At first it looked like this shape was based on Am Pentatonic but you say it is in C (I suppose you mean Cmaj) and it looks like it is based on the 'C' position based on the 3rd fret 'C' on the A-string. Is that correct?
Hi what i don't get is Andrew is starting in C right? But he moves everything down 2 frets right? But then he says B flat? I don't comprehend that? Wouldn't it be B ?
Like the way all AW's noodling sounds, would love to hear original compositions! Hope someone can help me with a problem I have. I see tablature and holding a guitar to be inverted, know I have to flip over the tablature in my mind. Haven't figured that out, all suggestions appreciated. BEST AND PEACE
A friend of mine says my composting is coming along really nice. I said, don't you mean composing - and he said no.......the composting pile is where my stuff belongs....... :(
Hi Andrew, I just found this video and your site...is the Guitar Handouts Vol 5 book still available? If so, how do I obtain one (donate to your site??) Thank you
Hola buen dia soy de Buenos Aires Argentina quisiera saber de ser posible como consigo un libro de estudio como el que esta publicando en este video gracias
My main problem with soloing is the notes don't flow...at all. They sound choppy, if that makes sense. Even when sliding up the fretboard, you can hear every fret. My bends are okay though.
Love your stuff with one critique; the guitar neck superimposed on your video when you are playing should be reversed so that the neck of your guitar matched the neck of the picture superimposed....its confusing to follow
The way the diagrams are shown in the video is the proper orientation that has been in place for over 50 years, and used in every book, website and magazine related to guitar. The orientation in this video is the correct way of displaying the guitar neck. I did not make this up, it is the global standard in use world-wide.
When i first started seeing his stuff. I thought it abit " over my head" and boring...not true. If you listen to him you will find out he knows what he is doing and talking about..great guitar player AND Teacher!
You can't solo if u copy everyone else to much...it's ok to use and learn from others but in the end it's your own style u got to make do with...ya it's true what he said too much knowledge can be a curse and work against solo playing...

I ordered a mug from your site and I didn’t get my guitar handout?
I learned a lot from your video
Thanks for your time! Learning to hear it is key.
You're very welcome!

I think that you are one of the best teachers in guitars on UA-cam! Thank you!
Thank you, This video has your videos have helped me immensely with my understanding of the fret board. Never stop putting out content thanks.

Great lesson Andrew. Thank you.
I really like it. It reminds me a lot of the moveable scales Social Distortion uses. "Prison Bound" has the feel of this scale a bit. Thanks !
Strikes me as being more about developing a simpler way of going about the process than any particular pattern or scale. That’s very helpful.

You are fantastic. And Canadian to top it off. Love how you teach
Excellent explanation Andrew! Thanks for this video!
Glad it was helpful!
I noticed that you didn't touch the 6th string even though that was on the diagram. I find that confusing.

yup same goes with me. my fingers automatically dance on the fretboard. i didnt remember what I'm doing.
thank you for the advice I like your approach to learning

I want to order your ebook

Hi what i don't get is Andrew is starting in C right? But he moves everything down 2 frets right? But then he says B flat? I don't comprehend that? Wouldn't it be B ?
"C" down to "B" is a natural half-step distance. When you travel from "C" down a whole-step (2-frets) the note you're on is "Bb."
Link to buy/download the book? I don't see it under the books section in your store.

What years did you attend GIT?
1991 - 1992
OMG yes!! They make it terribly complicated. Must be like a barrier to entry. 😩
will this get posted out to Australia
Bloody Brilliant!

Definitely has nothing to do with my lack of practice, or not knowing where to go next musically! Most certainly not!
Been watching for a long time, but I can say this video was directly about me. Great advice. Great teaching👍
Great to hear!
Thank You Sir!
I like this guy!

Why guitarist can’t play a solo....pulls out a 500 page book. 😂
Yes, seems like poor UA-cam salesmanship to advertise the book before even telling us one useful thing. It reminds me of Dianetics.
I like what you do but am afraid too quick to grasp properly for a novice cheers Harry
I purchase one of your tee and never got my e-book 🤷🏽
Is he looking at me or you?
Nope.

This is the exact same thing that everyone teaches, memorize a pattern and move it around the neck. This doesn't tell me why I can't solo,,sorry.
Why don't you teach the notes in the shape
Your too quick, yourcnot very clear man
I’m 55 metal head get out of the groove make something different.
