  • Unboxing some Mountain Crest Gardens Sempervivum (Hens and Chicks) I ordered on Overstock. Very nice starter selection. I created a rock garden and planted them.
These are succulent-like plants that are winter hardy in growing zones 3 to 8. Even though they look like succulents, these plants are actually part of the stonecrop family.

Looks great. You have some nice varieties and colours there. I have an area selected for a succulent garden. Great drainage and already raised, but I want to see if they can survive my winters. I have so much going on in my problem garden at the moment that I can't find the moment to do something new. Seeing your video has inspired me to get my act together

I have taken on more than I really should have. It is getting hard to keep up with as my work is starting to get busier. It is best to go slow and tackle one thing at a time.

How is your rock garden doing now ? Looks gorgeous! Love semps . They’re my favorite succulent now cuz they can handle the cold and even get more beautiful because of it . I’m having a lot of rot this year cuz of constant rain and heat this summer. Thank you for the video 😊

Rock garden held up well over winter and into the next year. I ended up taking it apart because I wanted to expand the bed. I still have several of the sempervivum - some in containers and some in the ground. I even used some of the small babies that grew to make a little succulent gnome garden, you can see it here: ua-cam.com/video/rmGqWh7Czt8/v-deo.html

Hi Monica, Thank you for your video! I enjoy it a lot. I always wanna have my rock garden on my front yard but still hesitated to do so because there's many of squirrels around my house. T_T Do you have any problems with those animals digging on your garden?

We do have lots of squirrels (I'm in NJ) and chipmunks but they seem to leave the sempervivums alone. They do dig all over my beds and make big holes looking for nuts they buried - very annoying.

@@linglingchen5534 When I planted some fall bulbs I sprinkled some cayenne pepper in the area and they seemed to leave that area alone.
