I met him in 1988 at a in-store signing. He was there with Joe Lynn Turner. I had a copy of Alcatrazz's "No Parole from Rock and Roll" that I had him sign and he must have talked to me for 5 minutes about that album (much to the chagrin of the people in line behind me!). He was a totally cool guy.

Yngwie did the same thing Hendrix and VanHalen did. He changed the way we play. The difference with Yngwie however is that most guys never put in the work it takes to get even close. His style is not easy and that is why so many guys cut him down. They simply can't do it.

I've always thought Yngwie was such a unique musician- I was introduced to him when I was maybe 15-16. Got to see him perform once because my dad was a fan too. His virtuoso captivated and had a huge impact on me, and made me much more interested in classical music. I also became a lot more discerning and critical with my musical taste and actually payed attention to what I heard and let myself hear after listening to him. Thanks for your contribution to music Mr. Malmsteen. People only knock him because their egos feel threatened.

I reckon he comes off as an ahole, cause hes not a super wordsmith, just like, hmm I dunno, 90% of us men/people in general. Unlike superstars who can afford it, he doesn't have some legal dude, nor mentor whispering in his ear every 20 seconds to dictate what to say,.. not sure if it's a good thing that he doesn't, but he's not worldwide universal famous, so it doesn't (need to) apply: that isn't the norm for niche rock musicians, as he is..
imo he is just a regular dude living a life of extravagance, due to his loyal following, thus cameras are on him more than the the average folk.. the cameras just capture him being real.

Ahhh... a big fat shame for this lazy interviewer from Rock Scene, the same old copy/paste questions as in all his other interviews the last 35 years. His musical family, his roots, the paganini story we’ve heard it a thousand times. You had the opportunity to interview Yngwie Malmsteen and came up with this same old shit, unbelievable!! Come up with some new questions to this guitar player :-\
Do your homework and do some research!!

I think Shawn Lane could have played circles around YJM. Not just in speed, but also in musical unpredictability.

Powers of ten was a great album but I wouldn't even try to compare them. Sometimes being too unpredictable is just as bad as playing endless runs in the phrygian mode.

@@FuelAirSparkTime True true. It's just that when I listen to YJM, I can anticipate the direction he's going in. I could never play as beautifully clean and fast as he can. But I kinda know where he's going. Now when I hear Shawn play, I get the shakes of surprise, joy, and envy because he really was in touch with the angels, and he probably never even knew it himself. Or maybe he did and is now eating rice with the angels 😇.
