Yep, I was in Vegas this week for WSOP. I was at a small local casino just off the strip and I could hear a pit boss talking to the cashier... "Yea, we really getting taken at the craps table tonight. Some Asian guy...I don't think he has a players card..." I couldn't hear much, but it's like the casino was plotting against this guy for winning so much. I went by the craps table and sure enough, an Asian guy playing with stacks of purple $500 chips.
"It happened to be my life, I didn't plan it, it just happened." This stuck out to me most from the entire interview. Such a simple statement that so many of us could relate to. The weird part about life is one can plan and plan to their hearts content but at the end of the day sometimes things just fall the way they want and life happens. I would've never imagined being in the position I am.
Both of my parents have worked in Casino's over 40+ years. My dad is now a pit boss. I remember right before my 18th birthday, they both sat me down and made me promise on my life, that I would never set foot in a Casino. That would never gamble, not even the Lotto Max. They shared some stories of people who have lost it all - the same people who were millions in...and just like that - gone. Talk about a person straight up getting a heart attack in the casino after a loss - another about a man who slit his wrist in the bathroom. About another person who basically was there 48 hours straight...They made me promise. I don't even fake bet with my friends. I know it means a lot to them and they are likely saving me from a horrible end.

Just 6 years ago I was managing a long-term recovery home for women with substance use and concurrent disorders. The special kind of brain you talk about is the trauma brain (often birthed during childhood). People who live with false beliefs of themselves. For gamblers its no different, the need to feel good is what everyone wants whether you are someone in active addiction, or not.
It all depends on the person. It's the same with alcohol for example. I can get drunk once in a while and not become an alcoholic, but some other guy will. I play the lottery every now and then, and I don't have a gambling problem.

I don't think he has many regrets. He came here poor. He made millions, lived like a king and eventually became poor again. Nothing loss, but much gained.
Money became meaningless to him, it was coming & going in such huge amounts, gambling like this rewires the brain and you lose touch with what money is for in the grand scheme of things
I don’t think many viewers know what an absolute poker legend this guy is. Unfortunately he was also addicted to dice and some other games that he couldn’t beat and he went broke from those addictions
Just a quick google search and I found out this man is a legend. Anargyros Nicholas Karabourniotis, commonly known as Archie Karas, is a Greek-American gambler, high roller, poker player, and pool shark famous for the largest and longest documented winning streak in

Archie is an absolute legend! This does not even come close to showing who he was. He was not some normal high roller gambler, he's one of the greatest of all time!!!
Be careful in “legendizing” him …..I would consider him more of a cautionary tale. If he rode off into the sunset w/ the casinos money - that would make him a legend ….. he is broke, unhealthy, and bitter at the moment - however, a comeback story … now that would be “legend”!!
That’s how they get them. They are so nice to the regulars etc meanwhile the casino always wins In saying that, I do love LV there is so much to do there If anyone is watching intervention atm they are based in LV and show the people living in the tunnels below the hotels
I once met a guy at a casino who had his picture on the wall holding a giant $30,000 check. I asked him why he looked so un-excited after hitting the jackpot in the picture. He told me that he lost $100,000 to win that $30,000.

This is a very good interview. My dad lost everything when I was teen due to gambling, including a multimillion dollar family business. He lost his marriage. He lost the respect of family and friends. I don't think society realizes the destruction gambling addiction can cause. This is a cautionary tale.
Yeah some people just have that addictive personality and it ruins them. It causes many many suicides each year here in Las Vegas but our news has always played down the amount of suicides in Vegas. Especially ones connected to gambling. The casinos won't allow it because it's bad for business. The casinos do and always have run Las Vegas. Even when the mob ran it, they did it through casinos.
@@allonscanadiens sorry about that,it happens to most. I was lucky and my old man could actually beat Poker and made a decent living. My father was addicted to gambling. Card games. He was playing almost every day. He did'nt care for his family, his children at all. He was never nice to us. Even when we begged him to stop, he wouldn't listen. He lost all of our money. One time, I was in elementary school, I remember it very clearly, he came to my room, took my little piggy bank and smashed it in front of my eyes, took all the (little) money that dropped and left. My mom was devastated. Left quite an impression on me. As I said, he wasn't a nice man, rather cold and cruel and didn't give a single f about us. My mom kinda held it all togehter with her job and hidden savings. Dunno why she didn't leave him earlier. She eventually did later on with my help, though, but quite "late in the game" (pardon the pun). Archie's story and him explaining it made all sense to me. I went "Yep, yep, that's how it is", nodding my head throughout the whole interview. People thinking gambling can't be labeled as an "addiction" and laugh it off as something minor do not have the slightest idea. It can destroy your life and that of others like taking hard drugs. It's no joke.
I've met and seen Archie numerous times. He was always playing high stakes pool. He loved action. There was no quit in him. He played good too! And the thing that stood out to me most about him, he always carried himself and spoke like a true gentleman. Biggest gambler I've ever met. RIP Archie

There is a crucial part you guys are missing that makes this story interesting. Greeks are known for 2 things when they come to the US: Owning a restaurant, and gambling. My grandfather owned 2 restaurants in New York after immigrating, he gambled both away. Its hard to explain but its a weird phenomenon with Greeks. Its almost just apart of our culture at this point.
My grandfather came to the NY in '65, was a taxi driver, both Greece and here. And a gambler ... I went thru his ill kept belongings and papers after he died (broke of course). He briefly owned a parking garage in Manhattan, then lost it, gambling earnings and losses. Had that property stayed in the family, it would have been life changing. Both my father and I never took up games, nothing beyond computer solitaire.
This guys a Las Vegas legend . I would hear about him but was never sure he really existed.I’ve heard stories about him for 40 years but never heard him talk until now .
My dad is a gambling addict and an alcoholic. He lives two states away and I don't see him or talk to him much. When he said gambling and family don't mix I felt that.
This was oddly interesting. He didn’t have a lot of story to tell but is humbleness and awareness of what truly matters in life is refreshing. I hope he find joy and a sense of accomplishment before it’s all over.
As a former blackjack dealer at a huge casino, this dude is 100% spot on about the casino world. Hes the real deal. He takes accountability for his gambling and that's important. Seems like a good dude. I honestly recommend no one start gambling. You cannot beat the long term statistics of casino games. The movies about beating casinos is mostly fiction, only rare cases. Stay away
I’ve been gambling since the age of 15 in Greek poker houses. Now 39 I’ve literally lost 90% of every dollar I made since 15. I work very hard and could not stop gambling knowing most likely I was going to loose. Birthdays Christmas holidays in general were horrible because of the money I lost. I’ve made a lot of money since age 15 and I’ve lost over 1.5 million dollars. My life would be pimping money wise if I never gambled. It’s the one thing I wish I could change and take back. Do not gamble at all because if you go once or twice and win, your mind will play tricks on you to think you can always run to casino and make money if you need a little extra. You could loose $1,500 $2,000 and chase it and end up loosing $8,500. You will forever chase the little money you lost and it’s going to cost you everything. These casinos would not be so big and nice with the latest technologies if people was winning. I pray my son never gets into gambling.

There is so much more to Achries story, for anyone who thinks he’s full of it, HES THE ABSOLUTE REAL DEAL. Did you guys know the 25,000 dollar chip was created because of Archie? At one point he had every 5,000 dollar chip that the horseshoe had in his box. They had to create a 25,000 dollar chip because of him. This man is an absolute LEGEND in the gambling world. Chip Reese? Any of the old time big poker players? Archie beat them all.
Archie is simply telling it like it is. The money he won at some point didn't make him a hero, and losing it didn't make him a bum. Deep down he's the same person he's always been. It's just that gambling takes over your life. You know it's bad for you, but you just can't stop. I'm an addicted gambler as well, so I know what he's saying.

Archie is a great man. He seems broken down (his spirit), but he's a good man. You can just tell that. I loved this video. Archie might not have graduated high school, but he learned lessons that no school can ever teach you.
Given what he said in this interview about his health problems, I suppose that we shouldn't be surprised. But that doesn't make it any less sad. The gambling world has lost a true giant. RIP Archie.
My dad is a gambler, Gambling is the worst vice of them all. Drugs and alcohol you will die or destroy yourself completely and most people can tell they can see you coming. With a gambler, you might never know what's going on until it's too late. When a gambler starts to borrow from the wrong people your whole family is in danger.
This guy is a legend !!!! The casinos used to call him and ask if they could please get some of their chips back so that other people could play !!!!!!!!!

I worked at a casino and I've seen it first hand. We learned in gambling awareness through work that gambling addicts have the highest rate of suicide of any addiction. People who work in casinos are addicted to the job because you are making money based on tips and that will depend on how much your customer is winning. Please do more gambling interviews. This topic needs more awareness.
Yup and they don't tell you what a bartender must tell their clients. Casinos don't tell you to tell them to stop. They don't tell you to stop serving them. There is no MADD getting gambling laws changed. It's sad.
@@Poochiepoochie54321 Well, in both your example and mine, the Law does not permit serving someone an excess amount of alcohol. But my point was that Casinos are NOT legally required to take the same precautions for Gambling.
Just as most of these comments say, Archie is in fact a great man. Just as you see him in this video, he is the same person today. Only he is now much thinner LOL. My job requires that I see him every day (well 5 days a week). It’s true that he has an aneurysm & he has had several operations. To the point where today, he would not be able to hold a conversation like this interview. Although he has made a great achievement in life, he is not proud of it. Because it changed nothing for him, but took him from Point A to Point B, and back to Point A again. He has nothing tangible to show for his achievements, only wisdom, advice, and self-taught lessons. I have learned from him that money means nothing if you cant make it work for you, pay it forward, or discipline yourself to maintain it. I am happy to see that in this interview alone, he has touched other people with just a few words and phrases he has said. So I hope tomorrow, while reading back these comments to him, he can see that he is worth more than what he feels of himself today. And that these comments can show him that he did not Win or Lose in vein.

Thank you for doing an interview regarding gambling addiction. Gambling wreaks havoc on the gambler and everyone in his/her life as does any other addiction. They are master manipulators and liars. They borrow or use any money they can get their hands on to gamble again for that high. Families are financially and emotionally ruined, creditors are never repaid ... every waking moment is spent on when they can gamble again. It’s never their fault if they lose ... they are always perpetually broke because they always use any money won or acquired to gamble again. Their gambling comes first before family or work. It consumes their every waking moment and they will never admit they have a problem. They think they will win it all back again.

As a gambler in recovery - one day at a time - I found it a great reminder of the the choices we make and the price we pay. Gambling is a lonely life. Once you’re in the grip, nothing else matters. Life and it’s joy becomes meaningless. It’s not about the money as he says. It’s about the thrill. The despair. The ups and the downs. It’s horrible. There is nothing meaningful about being a gambler. It’s addiction.

You made the tough choice to move on from him, but obviously still love him despite his issues. Yes, addiction IS horrible. I know firsthand how bad gambling is.
A rarity for sure. When he said “I’m not an investor. I’m a gambler. It’s my personality,” that was a poignant moment. His ability to be honest with himself... unmatched! You don’t usually see that with gamblers. In my personal experience they’re oftentimes very grandiose.

This is one of the best episodes I've seen in the series. So many valuable life lessons to learn from. Archie's run was legendary but also shows the other side of gambling. He is so raw and authentic in his self awareness and emotions. Really hope his heath improves and wish things get better for him. This man can save a lot of lives with his story.

Yeah obviously, because he doesn't want to glorify the lifestyle when he's sitting there talking about it after losing it all. The goal is to open up a conversation on addiction and the evil nature of gambling and the life lessons he learned from it.
Unique interview with a great introduction. It was interesting listening to his story and learning how he got into gambling. Had a family member who was a gambler and would drive from ND to Las Vegas 3x a month and ended up losing everything in the end. Never fully understood what drew him to gambling, so it was great hearing someone talk about gambling from personal experience. Was able to understand a lot things that I hadn't understood before watching.
It’s the hope. the hope that the next hand, roll, or spin will hit the jackpot. And that jackpot will pay for the rest of your life and fix all your problems with that money.
This interview has given me mixed feelings. Part of me feels like gambling right now. The other part of me says Quit, and never gamble again. Deep stuff!!! 👍
we all say money doesn't mean anything, but listening to him I completely understand it now. "People would give a couple of billion dollars for a couple more days of life" that shit is deep.
I've always been drawn to sad people. I guess that explains my addiction to this channel. I love Archie. Could spend every day hanging out with this guy.
As a gambler my whole life, I can honestly say the most satisfying feeling comes from when you are down and make it back to even or a few bucks up. Being open 24 hrs casinos have time on their side, just keep them playing, keep them on location. Too much of anything in this life is not a good thing. Everyday you gamble unknowingly when you walk down the street, drive a vehicle, and even deal with people you meet along the way. Money is meaningless. It is a necessary evil outside of the good old barter system. Understand that in life there are no rights or wrongs. There is what you choose to do and what you choose not to do. Whether something is right or wrong goes along with who writes the laws and those that do control the game being immune to the rules we all are held to. Health is supposed to always be number one. Your body is a temple - garbage in and garbage out. Everything we consume is toxic in some form. The little things and important things can't be bought with money. You have to pay attention to not miss those things as they can pass by and you can miss out on them. Keep your head on a swivel, listen to people, and don't judge anyone. Your body is your own temple or alter. When your young your invincible and as you age your body becomes a visible physical receipt of all you experienced in life. You have to love who you are as a person, the good and the bad, and from there be respectful to those around you while trying not to judge others. No one is perfect, control is an illusion and death is not the end. Live each day as if it were your last. Never fear death as it is simply an unknown next step in the journey of one's soul. It's ok to have some fear of it but the life your living is in preparation for this continued journey through our electric universe we are all surrounded by. That power is what created all we know, it is within each of us and all around us. We must learn to be one with each other and not divided and against each other. If that happened...The house would not have a chance in the game. 2021 looks like the house is about to clean out humanity at the table we are all gambling on in some way. Archie, your a legend and you lived life your way, no real regrets, as I know if you could you would live it over again and change nothing...What a thrill. But to each his own. Best of luck to you all in this life and whatever is to come in the now and in the after.

I honestly recommend no one start gambling. You cannot beat the long term statistics of casino games. The movies about beating casinos is mostly fiction, only rare cases. Stay away
One needs only to ask ones self: "Where did the money for these big casinos come from?"
Beatable by only a few !!!!!
You can win big for sure. The problem is that if you don’t stop, you will lose everything eventually.

You've had on some big names, ones you could have posted in the title in full to get more clicks and instead you keep it even across the board whether it's a stranger to the spotlight from a no- name town, to the well knowns in their "field" so to speak. I believe it to be a nod to your work on SWU...everyone is human no matter where they end up in life. Humble is everything. I can see how you got so far in your profession. 👏🏼
@Tarziu Armando-Liviu .... well you're clearly insane
When I was younger I was in a long relationship with a gambler street dice and cards. He would literally gamble for days come home with his knees literally spilt open. I tried to help him. A year after leaving him I started my business I could not have ever done that with him. Years later I seen him after starting my business and he apologized he said he knew he held me back. I told him he didn't do anything I didn't allow. Addiction is a horrible thing a lot of ppl don't speak on gambler addiction 💔
Hi. Im innocent in this area, dont know anything about gambling, havent seen the interview yet. Wondering: why were his knees split open? Im sorry if this is a stupid question
@@junglegirl5174 no question is stupid. His knees were split from him being down on his knees shooting dice 💔
That's really wonderful that you deflected the blame onto yourself. You must be an amazing woman. I'm glad he apologized to you though. He knew how his gambling addiction affected you. You made the tough choice to move on from him, but obviously still love him despite his issues. Yes, addiction IS horrible. I know firsthand how bad gambling is.
Dude takes his wins like he takes his losses. I love it. 💪🏿
A rarity for sure. When he said “I’m not an investor. I’m a gambler. It’s my personality,” that was a poignant moment. His ability to be honest with himself... unmatched! You don’t usually see that with gamblers. In my personal experience they’re oftentimes very grandiose.
@@voodoochile4147 that's real
Ufc 98 Rashad Evans vs Lyoto Machida..right after getting knocked out Rashad said "you gotta take em like you give em"
@@dickmonddickelheimer9452 facts.. No excuses. If u loss u loss. Take it like a champ n congratulate the winner. He said he won the money n lost it in the same breathe n didn't even blink an eye. Amazing 💯
Rashad is pure class.
What an amazing guy. You can see that this was a guy that had it all at one time. Hope your health gets better soon.
"Gamblers enjoy both winning & losing."
Archie is spot dead on with this. I've been playing Poker for 14 years & I can attest to this. Winning & losing feels good because they both take your emotions to a level that normal activities cannot. The emotional rollercoaster of being down then getting it back & then some is unexplainable. Archie is a definitely a real one. 💯
I don’t know about you guys but I sure don’t enjoy losing.
@@user-sc3wh9im3nYou obviously missed the point. In other words winning only feels good because losing feels bad.
He is the real deal. Thank you for your life. Healing is what is coming your way. Very special man.
That’s the beauty of this channel, someone is always gonna have a crazy story that someone is always gonna want to listen to. We never know who’s story is next
Wow. Congrats to Mark for securing this interview. Karas is a legend. Hi sorry comparisons of gambling to war really illuminates what the activity - at its highest level - truly is.
News reports indicate Archie Karas passed away y'day, September 29th 2024, aged 73. Once again many thanks to Mark for giving us through this channel a first-hand taste of who Archie was.
Oh bummer!
I find all your videos so terrific. I feel most privileged to be seated at the feet of these people and listen to them. Many like this gambler I would love to help, to shake his hand and say how much he means to me and many others. These are real people who share remarkable experiences. Many thanks...
So glad to have caught this, after just losing it all again for the umpteenth time. Now I’m about to watch!
Do you have a gambling problem? Please get help. You never win with that.
I have Won and Lost but NEVER NEVER mix ANY substance with gambling especially Coke Speed or Alcohol.
@@phoenixzappa7366 I’m working on it now and yes I’m addicted

Good luck! You can do it!
Total LEGEND! Hard to see this interview and kind of wish I didn’t. This man is an absolute legend in any and every gambling circle. He lived the ultimate story and while gambling IS a big circle, it’s impossible for most to get out at the top. Most exit the bottom when gambling gravity snags you for the last time either in a session, a run, or in Archie the Greek’s case...in life. Bummer
Imagine the stories this guy must have? He's awesome...he nailed so many points of what's important in life
This interview understates how legendary this man is
This channel is Gold. So authentic, so interesting, often hard to digest, but so damn real.
@Tarziu Armando-Liviu ???? And that comment is realted to what I wrote because? Proper nutcase you are
This is one of the best episodes I've seen in the series. So many valuable life lessons to learn from. Archie's run was legendary but also shows the other side of gambling. He is so raw and authentic in his self awareness and emotions. Really hope his heath improves and wish things get better for him. This man can save a lot of lives with his story.
Archie should have his own UA-cam channel sharing his stories.
Oh my God, it's Archie.
Living in vegas in the 80s and 90s I knew about him, word was that he drove up from the L.A. area dozens of times with 50-100 $, ran it up to a million, went broke, drove back to L.A.
Over and over again.
There was nobody like Archie.
so he is a loser
LOVE that you explored this route of addiction. So important to discuss. THANK YOU!
♥️
You have beautiful lips!!
This man is honest, not like 99% of people who bullshit about who and what they are in life.
He tells it like it is, “ im a gambler”..... No bull, no fluff.
Makes me feel proud to be a greek like him.
This guy is a legend in Vegas and every word he's saying is true. The most impressive thing was him beating a lot of the best poker pro players.
Whatever makes you sleep at night
@Tarziu Armando-Liviu WAT?

@Tarziu Armando-Liviu Oy vey.
Man is a legend. From a fellow Greek...we love you Archie. Would love to shake his hand one day.
Malaka
This man is wise and humble. Where can I find more like this
Right here dear.
A wise man doesn't lose 18 million in a casino.

My respect for this guy. Thank you for sharing your life to us that gamble sometimes. Wining makes you feel good not happy but good vs loosing makes you feel like shit. (Miserable)
He says a lot of stress and a lot of pressure. Agreed
Man. These interviews are good.. I've watched about 10 now and this is a goodie... Excellent interviewing. I'm no expert but he asks a simple question and Archie runs with it for minutes..
Archie's damn smart too.. "The things i want, money can't buy... Freedom, love, happiness and health" is genius..
@Tarziu Armando-Liviu Get a hobby.
This guy has some incredible stories, this didn’t touch the sides. He didn’t really want to open up.
For sure 💯
I got the feeling that he did NOT want to romanticize the gambler’s life.
Enjoyed listening to Archie! A lot of wisdom!!! And very humbled.
Wow these interviews are so strong and honest. Heartbreaking I'm thankful for my life.
This interview has given me mixed feelings. Part of me feels like gambling right now. The other part of me says Quit, and never gamble again. Deep stuff!!! 👍
we all say money doesn't mean anything, but listening to him I completely understand it now. "People would give a couple of billion dollars for a couple more days of life"
that shit is deep.
And I’d sell them
I've always been drawn to sad people. I guess that explains my addiction to this channel. I love Archie. Could spend every day hanging out with this guy.
Thought i was the only 1
As a gambler my whole life, I can honestly say the most satisfying feeling comes from when you are down and make it back to even or a few bucks up.
Thanks for the long paragraph of cliches. Oh, and of COURSE there are rights and wrongs in life.
Really enjoyed the wisdom shared beyond gambling. Many life lessons in this interview and as always when the student is ready the teacher arrives.
Thanks so much for this story Mark. I am having an issue getting away from poker and this puts it in real terms. It's amazing how gamblers view money.
finally a gambler. pls more of them.
This is one of your best interviews I have seen so far, I worked in the casino entertainment industry for many years. This guy is very wise, money is nothing without your health to back it up. I feel kind of sorry for him.
The way he distills the psychology of the gambler is really on point. I too have a 7th grade education, and found a way out of poverty by taking risks. Been to the bottom and all the way up.
This man is a legend. I've seen and heard about him for many years. It's sad to see how he lost it all. Wish him the best
Worked at Binions for 7 years. Heard lots of stories about Archie. Good to hear his side of things.
