  • How to replace the timing belt on a Peugeot 407 fitted with the 2.0 16v HDi engine engine code DW10BTED4.
    This is the first time i have carried this job on any 2.0 16v engine and took a few steps that came from memories of working on the old 2.0 8v from the 406. The newer engine is arranged differently with an idler pulley being located in the lower section of the engine mount bracket. The fuel pump also is not driven by the cambelt, but instead it has been moved to the other side of the engine and seems to be driven via the camshaft.
    Generally it is not too hard to replace the belt on this engine, the drain bolt at the back does not need to come off, you can flush the coolant well enough via the bleed screws. The fact the starter needs to come out to access the hole to lock the flywheel is a hassle, if the hole had been elsewhere on the block it may have been possible to do it without removing components but then the timing belt is not due for at at least another 6 years.
    Regarding the timing belt interval, i do not have the exact information to hand but it usually is in the maintenance handbook that comes with the car. A document that is suprisingly hard to find in PDF form to confirm. However online searches seem to suggest the interval for a 2.0 hdi with a particle filter is
    All HDi engines without particle filter: 120 000 km (70,000 miles) or 6 years
    All HDi engines with particle filter: 180 000 km (110,000 miles) or 9 years
    This video is specific to the 407, although the same engine was fitted to other PSA cars such as the Citroen C5 MK1 facelift and MK2, the 307, 308, Dispatch/Relay, 607. Ford i belive used the engine in the Mondeo, and Volvo in a few of their cars from this era.

      Ive done a fair few also, didn't actually find it too bad. The PT cruiser or RAV4 2.0 D4D stand out as much worse than this timing belt. Hope you got the car going now.

      @@peugeotCitroen2CV Well as it turns out with that one the timing was correct, but the high pressure fuel pump was failing causing it to run rough and give EML for 'injector pressure too high'. The engine timing trouble was a red herring, I thought perhaps I'd been doing something wrong. So you're right they're not bad, as long as you're aware of that flywheel locking hole behind the starter motor. Your guide was super handy there.
      On the Peugeot, with no swarf visible in the fuel system I chanced it and put a second hand pump in there, refit the timing belt and it started. Happy days.

    kind of important to flush the coolant system with fresh water to prevent different coolant brands or compositions from mix if they are not compatible. Different coolants can and will react if not compatible. If the pin for the cam wheel and at the same time the pin that locks the flywheel/ flexwheel for the automatic gearbox, does fit in respective holes without resistance as seen in the video, the cam belt wheel at the crankshaft is timed properly. If one of the locking pins does NOT fit in its hole perfectly even with slight resistance, you have to loosen the crankshaft bolt to allow the crankshaft to move a bit so both locking pin fits perfectly, only then the crankshaft and cam is timed correctly. Then torque the crankshaft bolt to lock the wheel in position. Because the hole in the flexwheel for the automatic gearbox (also flywheel for the manual gearbox) can be distorted when torquing the crankshaft bolt, the special tool that grabs into the starter gear ring is needed.

    Good job. But what trick you did that you put 10 litres of coolant if we know that front hose can drain 5-6 l only from the sysytem when water pump is mounted? I'm looking for this trick from a long time. You used a fresh water to flush a cooling system. How to remove the half of this fresh water with minerals from engine block and air heater ? Thanks

      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Рік тому

      Hi there
      I have always ran the red 5 year coolant in my own cars, but you can ask at the motor factors what they recommend.
      Just make sure not to mix different coolants, ensure the full system has been flushed. Different coolants can react with eachother and result in reduced cooling efficiency.

      Hi
      I would disagree, the car is still running now no issues with the belt
      What screw are you on about?
      I had access to the official peugeot workshop guide for this engine, yes some unnecessary torque specs were skipped in favour for using experience but generally the process follows the guide.

    • @fiuskorpion
      @fiuskorpion 6 місяців тому

      the fact that the car still drives today does not mean that it was done wrong and the timing is set correctly. There's no point in patting yourself on the back that your car is running if you don't do it right. You can also paint the wall any way you like and it will still stand.
      the shaft pulley floats and is to be tensioned without any shaft screw. it floats to ensure proper tension. your timing is off by about 0.2-0.3 teeth
      yes, it will run, it won't explode@@peugeotCitroen2CV

    Bonjour si vous ne retirez pas la cible magnétique vous n'avez aucun moyen de vérifier que la clavette du vilo est bien centrée quand vous tendez la courroie neuve. Elle ne l'est probablement pas donc risque de soucis dans quelques milliers de km.

    • @peugeotCitroen2CV
      @peugeotCitroen2CV  Рік тому

      Hello, if you do not remove the magnetic target you have no way of checking that the key of the vilo is well centered when you tension the new belt. It probably isn't, so there is a risk of problems in a few thousand km.
      What is a "vilo"
      Cars still running fine so not sure what the issue is

    • @Charlie1012000

      @@peugeotCitroen2CVIt is not that the key is centered is important. If the pin for the cam wheel and at the same time the pin that locks the flywheel/ flexwheel for the automatic gearbox, does fit in respective holes without resistance, the cam belt wheel at the crankshaft and cam wheel is timed together properly. If one of the locking pins does not fit in the hole perfectly, you have to loosen the crankshaft bolt to allow the crankshaft to move a bit so the locking pin fits, only then the crankshaft and cam is timed correctly. Then torque the crankshaft bolt to lock the wheel in position. Hi,
      It is still between the two marks, however you have to predict how much tightening the centre nut will send the arrow beyond the centre so aim the arrow a bit further forwards or backwards before you tighten the nut, tighten it and see how it reacts. Can take a few times. One of those things the more you do them the better you can guess where to point the arrow. The tightening procedure and turning the engine will move it ever so slightly.

    • @throbinwood9911
      @throbinwood9911 Рік тому

      Spent another 2 hours muckin about with it this morning
      At one point the arrow moved so much I couldn’t see it any more. That was the final straw
      I took the tensioner off… put the old one back on
      Pulled the release pin and it instantly snapped perfectly between the 2 lines
      Did the bolt up… turned the engine… it didn’t move at all.
      Job done
