Eh, I sort of understood it, the book sort of explained it a bit better. I didn’t like how upset Leah got about him not coming out to her first, but then again I understand why she may be hurt about it. Finding out your friend used you in order to hide their feelings and hook them up with someone they don’t wanna be with is kind of hurtful. Idk. The book was better with explaining all sides.

Uuuumm...he lied to them and tried to manipulate his friends. Instead of telling them he was being blackmailed and letting them know what was going on so they could try and help them, he went behind their backs and tried to keep Abby and Nick from being together, which would have made them happy. On top of that, he tried to manipulate Nick further and throw Nick onto Leah, someone he doesn't even like romantically. That's a REALLY crappy thing to do someone you call your friends, so yeah, they kind of have a right to be mad at him. He could have easily have told them what was happening. And don't try to claim he was afraid of them finding out he was gay. He came out to Abby WHILE he was being blackmailed and could have easily told her then. He should have trusted his friends and been honest with them. Yes, I agree they were kind of harsh, but they were hurt and angry. Like Abby said, "I'm not a piece of meat" and that's how Simon treated her and Leah.

Tbh, it was understandable (in the book) why Abby was upset with him. But in the book she didn’t find out about him using her to hide his secret until later. So the whole supportive coming out thing was cemented. He reason why they fought is because, wether or not it’s understandable, Simon still did a shitty thing. There’s no way around it. I can sympathize with him (I’m bi) but also I know what he did to his friend was wrong.

You are the first reactor to say that he had (excuse the language) shitty friends. Yes, he made mistakes with them, but the scene in the cafeteria (canteen) spoke volumes. I love the fact that a teacher stopped it. However, Simon was in a bad place and none of his friends tried to see if he was ok after that. His parents staying by him was great too. I wanted Simon and "Blue" to have alone time too. Overall I enjoyed the movie. I watched it with my niece (she read the book and didn't tell me a thing) and had a conversation afterwards.

Simon was clearly struggling with everything - he had no idea how his family, mainly his father, would react, nor did he know what his friends or everyone else would do, and he was terrified. not to even mention the clear way Simon has internalized homophobia in the books. Simon needed someone to be there for him, especially after being outed in such a horrendous, embarrassing way, and the fact that his friends chose to just ignore the shit and trauma he went and was still going through wasn't okay.

I know they don’t usually get much screen time in these types of movies, so it can be a difficult thing to do well. Simon’s parents had a little complexity to them, which I enjoyed. This was a sweet movie. I also had a problem with his friends. I can understand them being pissed, but I think they should have been considerably more understanding of his plight. D. L. When I was watching the movie, it reminded me of the final scene of ‘Never Been Kissed,’ where Drew Barrymore waits on the baseball infield for her guy to show up, or not. The setup is very similar, with an ‘article’ being written that has a time to meet & everyone showing up to see if it’ll happen. It’s definitely cheesy, but I didn’t hate it, just like I didn’t hate it in ‘Never Been Kissed.’

I didnt like how his friends responded but I appreciate where they were trying to go with it. I just think they jumped the gun. They were trying to show that him being gay was such a small deal that they still held him responsible for lying and the poor choices he made. HOWEVER being gay in this world is still hard. And despite the fact that it should be the same as being straight, it's sadly not. They might be great friends and see it as just a part of him, and not a huge deal, but its still a hard thing in the world to be. And so the message was delivered and not felt. Yeah. Also the fact they had zero understanding of his position and made it all about them and their problems. Like, she's whining that he didn't notice she loved him, for starters that's on her for not being open about it. Secondly, welcome to the gay world. Unrequited crushes/love interests is practically a rite of passage. Then his other two friends complaining when it's really the same situation. Instead of being open with one another they just pissed around. The worse thing was that they got lied to. Simon got outed to the entire school. For some areas that can be literally life-threatening, and even in the best places it's really hard to deal with. Then when he needed them the most, when he was being embarrassed and bullied in front of everyone for a very specific reason, they did nothing. At the very least that suggests they thought he deserved to be treated like that, to experience discrimination in a really crude and humiliating way. They didn't have to forgive him or not be mad at him anymore, just stand up for him. They're really not great people.
For a movie about the subject of being a gay person, it really came across as being extremely tone-death to me.

They’re horrible friends. Period. I’m not gonna soften it. That’s not what friends do. I’ve asked other people what they thought about it who watched the movie and they almost all said some variation of “well they made up for it and they realized what they did was wrong!” And my point of view was that they shouldn’t have done it to him in the first place!

His friends definitely should have been more understanding ESPECIALLY Abby. They abandoned him without ever really getting the full story. Surely they had a right to be upset but it took them two months to get together (they make it seem like he kept them apart for a year) and he tried to remedy everyone’s situation when he tried to get his friends together, he knew she liked someone close but he didn’t think it was him. The stress of growing up, school, family, college applications, being closeted, AND BLACKMAILED...it’s a lot and they could’ve been more understanding.

I couldn't agree more with you about his friends. I hated them and definitely thought he forgave them too easily. That one girl knew how much he was struggling, and she couldn't empathize with him at all! Ugh....horrible friends if you ask me!

Sean recognizes just Katherine Langford from 13 Reasons Why and Jennifer Garner as of course Elektra, but here's a random fact: Logan Miller (Martin) and Jennifer Garner both were in Matthew McConaughey's "Womanizer" from 2009, where Logan Miller played the young version of him. Also: Nick Robinson (Simon) is the kid from Jurassic World (2015), Alexandra Shipp (Abby) from X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), Jorge Lendeborg Jr. (Nick) from Bumblebee, Alita: Battle Angel etc. and Josh Duhamel (the father) is Captain Lennox from the Transformers Movies, and he was with Tony Hale (Mr. Worth) in TF5...the more you know!

Love, Simon is my favorite movie. The best non movie related thing about it is that I read the book first, and found out that the movie came out on my birthday

I watched Love Simon before I knew I was bi
And now I realize why I cried when his family was so supportive
I think it’s because deep down I knew, and that I know my family wouldn’t be supportive of me. And I have so many friends struggling with the same problem.

Yes Sean doing my favorite movie 🤘🏾 and I agree he did deserve better friends they didn’t take the time to ask him why he did what he did he had to tell them and when he was getting made front of in the cafeteria they just sat there 🤷🏾‍♀️ I understand you guys aren’t talking but you still were friends you should’ve stood up for him

It takes so much planning and working yourself up for coming out to people likely to reject you that someone outing you is one of the worst betrayals possible. I was furious with his friends when I first saw this one. They should have been there for him.
