- It's always a risk to sing one of the judges' songs in these kinds of auditions: it might sound like your copying their version, or your own spin on it doesn't do justice to the original intent of the songs. Or... you put your spin on it and it serves the songs beautifully!
In this video I'll give you my opinion on how Olivia did with this challenge!

I really agree that the piano was just distracting her at times. She was changing the tempo when she was delayed in hitting the keys. Luckily her vocals are so extraordinary that it didn't matter much in this case, but she'd be much more effective without it.
I remember Lindsey Sterling's early days. The dancing was in the way of her violin technique. But she worked hard and look now. Sure the nerves themselves had Olivia behind the piano. I think over time Olivia's playing will also relax and become more of an asset. I wouldnt say "dont play and sing" but when, pracrice and do not use in a prrformance until its all togerher and the piano is second nature. Olivia's voice though here is simply a joy to listen to. The base tone is so natural and comes out so purely. She adds her own to the song. The emotion and expression is there in parts but i agree she can grow more musically. I don't need to hear the original intention of the sing. I want to hear Olivia to keep singing this song and think of a loved one and bring MORE her own emotional intention to the song. I want to hear more of her voice.
I loved the big powerful note at the end ...she was telling the man she loves....I love youuuu.....as though it may be the last time she could get his heart to connect with hers...strong and heartfelt. I loved it
It was worth it to show her potential to be able to play and sing better in the future...this is my favorite audition
Really, I just choose to enjoy her God given talent.
She owned it. She made it her own and did it amazingly. 🎶
Sometimes singers don't connect with professionals and vocal coaches, but her music would connect to the masses and people would buy it.
I noticed the little break during her performance but didn't realize she had a misstep with her playing. I came away impressed & she'd be one of the reasons for me to keep tuning into the show this year.
Great feedback - thank you!
Thank you for your input regarding this performance.
I can't wait to hear your analysis of The Voice Season 23, I loved the first episode of the blind auditions.
Thanks for your comment - I really appreciate it 🙋🏻♂️
Clark Beckham (Season 14 runner up who does Idol recaps on his channel) shared similar thoughts about her piano playing and how it would have been even better if she just sang. Still a pretty strong audition though, I think she'll be one to look out for.
Thanks for the comment 😊
I have to say I would absolutely love you to keep me. I think I have a great voice. But just what you were discussing in this video I have to completely agree. It amazes me and that shows your strength and your ability to be a vocal coach. That's exactly what you need to be doing right now. And I absolutely agree with you. I cannot say no.
I love your videos, and thank you did so amazing evaluation for the singer from my country Nutsa ❤❤❤
Thank you! What a lovely comment!
I love your videos ❤
Well guess what, she's going to win the whole damn thing. There, I said it..
If she keeps making smart choices, I also believe she can go very deep in the competition 🎉
THAT'S WHAT I THOUGHT THE MOMENT I HEARD HER, SHE WILL WIN!

Your ability to look past Olivia’s skillful vocal performance and tune into her areas of growth amazes me. Yes, the piano seems to be a distraction and I can say that from personal experience. Playing and singing is extremely difficult if you are not skilled at the former. In the future, I believe that Olivia can make a stronger emotional impact if she thoughtfully chooses when to use certain dynamics in her voice. Her pitch, range, agility, and tone are noteworthy, though.
Thank you for the lovely feedback. I really appreciate it 😊
Yessir, I look forward to more of your thorough and spot-on vocal performance analyses 😃
I really like your balanced analysis. Obviously you’re knowledgeable in theory and practice but you also demonstrate your passion.
Thanks so much for the lovely comment 😊
Very astute observations. It was actually nice to see you express your frustration so emphatically 🙂
You would think her instructor or mentor etc would have given her the advice to omit the piano.
Tyson, on the other hand, managed both the vocals and playing with superb skill.
Thanks again for your feedback - love hearing from you again 🥳
She actually did a great job ! Powerful voice. I really don’t like when you said : breathe . Do not forget she sat down with the piano in front of the judges. And she plays quite well in my opinion with emotions.
She ran out of breath at the end of that line. She's one of the best they've ever had on that show.
Agreed. The "identity" of the song was undecided. The identity of the singer was realized. No doubt she has a great voice and will grow and figure herself out more. Agreed about breathing and distracted by playing the piano.
Sometimes singers do all the runs and vocal gymnastics because they enjoy singing it that way. I know I really feel the song when I "soulify" it. Staplelton, vintage Mariah, Aretha, Ariana, etc.
Mmm, interesting comment - thanks for watching 😊
It was MAGICAL. It was supposed to be amateurish, so they can see themselves building on it. It was so so so PERFECTLY IMPERFECT. Lionel Richie freakin loved it... and so did I.
She did very well.
I agree with your observation 100%.
Thanks 😊
Sorry but her performance did feel authentic and connected. Her piano skills need to improve but that was more of a feature than a bug here.
OLIVIA IS MY FAVORITE, I HOPE SHE WILL WIN THIS YEAR!!
You seem to only echo Katy.. I am no expert but for an early 20s audition in front of celebrities it was probably top three, to my novice ears, in all the auditions.. I am pretty sure We Ani will win this season as she has had some coaching and is ready to shine.
I already saw We Ani on The Voice, but Olivia was 1000% better than We.
[She needs help] That's why she is on the show, to get that help and improve herself. Maybe the Voice coach should do a first audition and a last audition. Those nerves must be going bonkers for these artists.
She will have been coached at the end. Luke said the same drop the piano.
I disagree playing the piano and singing is freaking amazing and she slayed it
You must not play an instrument
@@1922Rhoyalty Her playing wasn't perfect, far from it. But it was perfect for this moment.
Those who cant do critique and teach
I think what you are forgetting here is that they are not looking for a perfect vocal audition,, they are looking for vocals, charisma, talent, passion, etc.... they take that ALL into consideration,, and I am sure they realized that since she was playing piano it took away form her vocals,,, you are stating obvious things that she and the judges probably both knew,, that being said she wanted to show not only could she sing but she also played and instrument and i personally think she made a wise wise choice!
You people act like she's under a contract with a record company hush leave that girl alone
I don’t like your reaction because even before she started singing, you were not pleased at all. And all the judges were so happy.
Coach, you're for the birds, = too old ?
Less is more.....too many vocal runs. Great singer, and obviously has the ability to do the vocal runs, but too much of this really takes away from her obvious talent. Just because you can doesn't mean you should, as the old adage goes.
Interesting point - thanks for sharing!
She was trying to make it to Hollywood. Sometimes you have to put it all out on the table. This wasn't a studio version.
ending was too loud n she ruined it.. it should of ended more quiet then got lower to a finish...
The ending was the best part.
Not original version, she just copied it from Kimberly of Holland who sang it far better than her... Watch it : The Voice Holland 2018 blind audition of Kimberly
You must be joking. Kimberly sung it (all but 2 lines) exactly like Lionel Richie. She sounded karaoke compared to Olivia. Olivia's version was much slower and completely different than Kimberly.
She is trying to impress way too much.
she should stop singing like ariana grande... it is not the right thing to do on this kind of song in my opinion
too much makeup on her eyes too she couldnt see much at all lol
