Seems the old man is content or [accepting of the past] in the end: "The old man was dreaming about
the lions." - last sentence in book.

Well, the novella reflects Hemingway’s life. He believed that a man can be destroyed but not defeated. He eventually took his own life, but he was not defeated. His legacy is still influential today.

Is taking one’s own life not the ultimate sign of defeat? I’m seriously curious.

I just read this! Really liked how you compared it to a bible story.
Also I loved the old man’s thoughts as he talks to himself. Wishing for something then telling himself to stop wishing and then having an idea and then contradicting himself. All while never faltering in his actions. He was determined in a superhuman way but it his thoughts felt so human. Also I liked the 24 hour arm wrestling match 😂

Thx for this, I really struggled to get through this story.
Every time he mentioned Dimaggio I just groaned and fell on the floor for some reason.

I had to read this when I was in highschool (1990's). I can't recall a single thing that happened in this book. It's time I at least learn the summary.

What I loved about this story is that it was in my opinion a story that perfectly exemplifies what is beautiful about the "masculine" half of the human soul. I am a man and I love my fellow human brothers, but it's been hard to put into words what I find beautiful and poetic about our half - it still is, which is why I recommend this story when I wish to show someone.
Interestingly I've gotten a few women to try the story, most didn't finish it and the very few that did - didn't "get" it. None were moved by the story. I've been thinking about why this might be when it's also one of my all time favorites. I wonder what you might think about that William?
Also, check out the book Iron John by Robert Bly, big book in the canon of "Masculine literature" - interested in hearing what you think of it.

Hard to say. Though I find simpler narratives either jive with people or they don’t. For instance, I got a lot out of The Alchemist, but that novel is spoken about negatively by a loud minority of people. Glad you share my appreciation for Old Man and the Sea 🙏🏻

@@williampdozier I did also really enjoy the Alchemist. I hear you but I know for a fact for example one of the girls still enjoys simple storylines in movies etc. Its interesting

I clicked on the video to find out how the story ends because there was no way I would ever finish this book, started and stopped months ago, but I saw your comment and it made me laugh so I gave it another chance today. It didn't resonate much emotionally, so peculiar haha! But, the old man reminded me of Arjuna somehow from The Bhagavad Gita so something to think about. Thanks for your insight, I'm glad I finished the story

Heminway seemed to always focus on failed attempts at things. For Whom the Bells Toll described a failed battle as did A Farewell to Arms. Here despite all this effort no fish was caught.

I am confused there is no climax. Ive been reading the book waiting for a moment of intrigue, but it never happened. For the first half of the book i thought the fish was just his hallucinations. The real take away i got is kind of about perseverance, but beyond that i don't really understand any of the broader implications.

I think it’s a really simple text. Maybe that’s my own ignorance, but I think that’s the truth. Maybe trying to view it as having a traditional climax is doing it a disservice. Maybe it’s message is simple and profound.
Idk though, my mind isn’t clear. If the boy were hear he would know what to say. Yes, if the boy were here.

The climax for many authors had they written the book would have been that he brought it back to town, and was able to sell it, gloat over it and make money off of it. But that's not what this book is about. It's about life and it's perseverance, there are is no real "climax" for most of us from day to day and this was just a day in the life of santiago. A bit more exciting than must but still just another day. If you get my reference to another famous book that you probably wouldn't view as having a climax.

Why dont you tell us about the metaphors, symbolism and similes that make this work so deep? I read it in 11th grade and just recently at age 67. It failed to impress me both times
