  • Work is set to begin Monday on a $12 billion high-speed passenger rail line between Las Vegas and the Los Angeles area, with officials projecting millions of ticket-buyers will be boarding trains by 2028.

      @@tomlarson713 Now how exactly did the Infrastructure act help Brightline? Did it fund the company? If I remember, wasn’t Brightline already in the progress of developed plans. They do have one in Florida already. Didn’t Trump try to pass infrastructure too, but the Democrats wanted to play politics instead?

      @@benkoch4973 Definitely bucks in Brightline’s pocket, but they would’ve developed it regardless of government infrastructure funding. Thinking like that would make me wonder…if the Democrats would’ve helped Trump pass an infrastructure bill then perhaps the railway would’ve already been completed by now! Instead we have to wait 4 extra years.

      ​@ArtTaggerr-223 No, that wasn't clear. Brightline was asked by reporters if the project would still move forward if they had not gotten the federal funding and they wouldn't answer the question. BLW was originally going with pure private funding, but couldn't get it.
      BTW, the public funding is closer to $5 billion.

    Having your car in Vegas isn’t a good thing. You have to park it, worry about it, and you’re on the hook for fuel and maintenance. I’d rather get dropped off in Nevada and walk or use Uber once I get there.

      Nobody I know rents a car in Vegas anymore their entire stay unless they are staying off-strip. Just no reason to do so with the way nearly every hotel charges for parking. Add to that just a lot less stress just getting a ride share.

      We need a federal ride share service to incentivize good drivers. Uber and Lyft can’t insure or protect their drivers. We need to cut out the middle man. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

    Amtrak used to go there on the Desert Wind and they toyed with the idea of having a Surfliner train go there. It is a shame that never happened

      I remember talking the Desert Wind from Union Station all the time, not sure why that stopped 🤔 it took about 7 hours to get to Vegas, still was nice 😊

      No, not everything has to take forever. It takes forever because the funds vet laundered 100x over before they quit on it altogether. Do you know how quickly our govt acts when they want anyrhing done? Check out the spending bill the lazy losers in congress passed on a Saturday (blasphemous for any elected official to work on a sat usually). Loom how quickly SF removed the homeless the second Newsom needed it. This project will either never be complete, or it'll finish after it goes several billions dollars beyond budget. This is the bs wr live with.

    I don't live near these areas. But I'm so excited for this. The US is finally getting high speed rail. Lets hope this expands far beyond these areas and the rest of the country. It will be super useful.

      It works as a starting point. Once you have a starting line, then you can build a network based upon it. Its basically how China built its enormous high-speed rail network.

      @yyan6501 of course it has to start somewhere but I can assure you China never built anything without purpose. It built its network from one major city to another major city. This will connect LV with Rancho Cucamon which no one from LA would even bother with. It's a dumb project that will take decades to complete and still won't connect LA to LV. It's just another waste of tax money.

      Union Station is the largest train station on the West coast and the center of transit for SoCal. It has multiple Amtrak, Metrolink, Subway, and Light Rail lines coming through it.

    *Awesome and about time!* I'm so excited for this! I'm an Angeleno (born and raised) and currently live in Europe. I use high-speed rail ALL. THE. TIME. in Europe -- Berlin to Amsterdam, Berlin to Munich, Paris to Brussels, Barcelona to Madrid. France and Spain has some of the best high speed rail in Europe. And of course, I haven't touched on the high speed rail in Japan which is on another level. I'm looking forward to this being fully realized. Love to see this going from L.A. to S.F. too. Can't wait to use these trains.

      Also, France has been building HSR for decades. SNCF is one of the best in the world when it comes to building HSR. Land is cheaper, there’s no need for lengthy environmental studies, and government doesn’t have to fork out billions to consultants on every project.
      California on the other hand did CAHSR backwards: they’re building the “easy” section in the flat, cheap(er) Central Valley, and connecting essentially nothing. The segments between LA-SD and SF-Oakland-Sacramento/Merced should have come first.

    According to my calculations, the 200 mph train will average about 120 mph. Distance: 218 miles, time: 110 minutes. Must be a lot of curves and hills.

      There are legitimate concerns about a repeat of the whole LA-SAN fiasco to occur here but there’s loads to point that might not reoccur here.
      Land is much, much more cheap between the areas of LA-LV in comparison. LV is well known for its giant flashy projects that incentivize tourism and there’s no doubt in my mind Las Vegas will slam anyone who gets in the way of this one. There’s finally the Olympics which would happen soon and I feel the government would help mediate the process in the case theres a slowdown to make sure they don’t look like clowns on the international stage.

    Idc how long it takes, this is my favorite construction project in the US rn. We have been falling behind other countries for a while now in trains/public transit, and once competition for brightline comes in it’ll lead to more affordable transit not just city to suburb or city to city, but also suburb to suburb in the far future.

      It literally makes no sense to make it to El Monte or anywhere closer to the downtown LA. In a pipe dream or in Sim City sure...but imagine the additional permitting, zoning, environmental effects to build it through to the heart of LA with so many NIMBYs. The project wouldn't finish until 2060. I hope people like you and others continue driving to Vegas so that the highways remain congested.

      Metrolink goes there from LA. The Brightline West station will be built adjacent to the existing Metrolink station, allowing a relatively easy transfer between the two. Both systems will coordinate their schedules so there'll be minimal wait time between them.

      Metrolink doesn’t take tap, you need to purchase individual tickets for Metrolink which costs more. This is what makes it a hassle, if you just pay 1 fare for this entire trip to transfer it would be a lot easier, right now it’s a bit confusing.

      This is a nothing burger they build off/on lanes for trucks and have signs about merging truck traffic. Yeah a bit of a pain but its been done all over the country when they widen highways and build new bridges so I think its just normal stuff. Some places might have under passes they can use and anyway the traffic during the work week is pretty light on the 15 more or less...

    There are often accidents of cars going into that ditch in the middle. God I hope they either raise the track (expensive) or have barriers at least (less safe but better than nothing). Imagine a car on track, and the high speed train collide with it. And when that high speed derail next to traffic, that will be secondary carnage.

      Exactly. It doesn't work here. Imagine driving to RC, parking your car there, taking that train on a predetermined schedule only to arrive in Vegas without having a car there. Same procedure on the way back. This is a solution that doesn't work to a problem that doesn't exist.

      Metrolink’s San Bernardino Line connects RC to Union Station. That’s currently a 74-minute ride, and Metrolink plans to eventually increase frequency to half-hourly in each direction to meet every BLW train at RC.

    Correction: One of the major reasons that CALHSR goes through the Central Valley is because it *is* by far the easiest route, unlike what the reporter claimed. A direct path between San Fransisco and Los Angeles would have to deal with mountainous terrain basically the entire way

      This is different from California High Speed Rail, which is publically funded and strewn out over decades. This is a privately funded hsr route by Brightline (they are still receiving some government funding though), who have already built a train route in Florida with success. I don't know if they will meet the deadline, but all of the ROW is secured, so I would expect this to be easily within 6 years and hopefully within 4.@@ricric8348

      ONE train an hour. Sections are so STEEP, the train can only go at around 70mph especially up and down the Cajon Pass.
      It will take around 2 hours "travel" time, but it also drops you off 3 MILES South of the Strip, and 9 MILES South of Downtown LV, so by the time you catch the taxi and get to your destination, you might as well have just driven your own car, because for most people, going door-to-door from your own house, it literally makes no difference in the overall time spent travelling between your destinations, unless you are literally only going from train station to train station and live next door to one of the train stations LMAO
