The Six Degrees are meant to represent six different mental illnesses, in order: Bi-Polar Disorder (movements 2 and 7), PTSD (movement 3), Schizophrenia (movement 4), Postpartum Depression (movement 5), Autism (movement 6), and Dissociative Identity Disorder (movement 8). Looking back on it, considering this came out in 2002, DT was way ahead of the masses when it came to raising awareness of mental illness.
If you really liked the orchestra element, you should really check out Sacrificed Sons from the same concert (Score). It's a beautiful 9/11 memorial song and the orchestra from the Score version makes it blow the album version of the song way out of the water.
As for James' vocal injury, that happened at the end of 1994 right before they went on tour for the Awake album. Even though James sounds great at this show, his voice is still a shell of its former ability. You should check out Under a Glass Moon from Live in Tokyo if you really want to see the amazing pipes he had pre-injury. It's insane how much range and power he had before the injury.

I really like the fact that DT's music aged soooo well today. It's like musician's secret box. I love them AGAIN!

This is a religious experience… every time I watch it. Mike is the greatest of all time. And James NAILS it this entire 3 hour show. Love this!!

If you ever plan to go to a DT show, DON'T document it, DON'T shoot videos of it etc. Just enjoy the experience. Trust me, you won't regret it. DT is about enjoying it live and not focusing on your smartphone. There will be enough people to shoot videos etc. :) I've seen them live around 15 times and i never took any footage of that. The time was just too precious. At some point they will release a DVD or a Blu-Ray, that's gonna be waaaay superior to your footage and you will enjoy the show to its maximum:) Take care and enjoy good music!

Dream Theater is one of a handful of bands that can make you feel every single emotion in one song. Great reaction. Thanks for sharing.

James' BEST performance ever was Another Hand/The Killing Hand from Live at the Marquee. This was before his 1994 food poisoning incident.

That would be awesome if you documented your Dream Theater experience. I've seen them about 20 times. Sadly, I won't be going to anymore shows because of covid. A word of advice-GO!! Make the plans to go. It's a life changing experience. Try getting a VIP pass if they have something like that for the full experience.

Hey marvin, the song is broken down into 8 parts, each part tells a story of a character dealing with mental anquish, the first part is a girl dealing with depression, 2nd part is of a war veteran coming home and dealing with ptsd, and so on and so on, so that is the premise of the song,so each song is a different character

I really enjoyed your reactions, keep on doing them.
I would like to point out/ comment on two things you've said:
    1) Solitary Shell, which is the sixth part of the suite (the one with the double neck guitar) is quite similar to Solsbury Hill by Peter Gabriel (try and listen them side to side)
    2) The vocal accident you were talking about happened on December 1994. What happened was that, due to a food poisoning while on vacation in Cuba, James lacerated his vocal cords while puking as he was severely ill.
Doctors said to him to rest his voice as much as possible for a period of at least six months (this included not to speak too loud). Against the opinion of the experts on January the 10 th ( or something like that) it was in Japan to start the the second leg of the Awake tour.
For this reason his injury got worse, he said in numerous occasions his voice didn't feel "right" until 2004.
If you would like to get a perspective on how damaged his voice was there is an infamous live concert in Tokyo which was live broadcast in TV in Japan, just search for "dream theater live Japan 1995" on UA-cam.
Sorry about my English: it is not my first language.

Your writing is fine! And thank your for the detailed response. I appreciate it and all of the information!
I’ll have to look up that show and see the difference in his singing style with a vocal injury like that. I’m glad that he has recovered from such a terrible experience.
And I knew I head some Peter Gabriel influence in the song 😂 Thank you for letting me know which song it was.
      And thanks for watching!

Absolutely: "Solsbury Hill" : What a piece of art this song is!!! I still remember 19 years ago when i first heard it, I thought: It´s finishing already? 41 minutes after it began...!!! It runs so fast!!! And the lyrics are another masterpiece apart...

I'll say it. This is why I feel Portnoy was a way better fit for Dream Theater. He's not better than Mangini. He's just a better fit for Dream Theater.

Portnoy is their biggest cheerleader and he gave so much energy every show. Mangini just sits there and plays like a robot. Nothing like his audition performance. Just like they plug him in every show and he just does the numbers

    • @thetymemachine3652
      @thetymemachine3652 2 роки тому

He's better, no matter what you say. Mangini is playing the stuff that Portnoy wrote, Mangini hasn't done a single memorable thing, he's just an amazing drummer but Portnoy is way better in a lot of ways AND fits perfectly in DT so stfu.

Great reaction as usual man! Definitely my all time favorite DT song. Just the meaning behind each song and how it's represented musically, like the back and forth between major and minor keys to represent bipolar disorder, it's all just perfectly put together!
