Thanks you for your comments! I do my best to keep up with them for the first few days after a video comes out, but due to the volume of comments on all of my videos, and to the general hustle and bustle of life, I must give up the fight after a while. If you are leaving a question four or more days after a video comes out I can't guarantee I'll see it, but perhaps one of my other viewers knows the answer and can help out. Thanks in advance to those who contribute and share their knowledge. Cheers and stay safe everyone!

Great video! I agree 100% about purchasing used bikes. I own four bikes and all have been purchased used. I just purchased a 2012 Yamaha Super Tenere' from an older gentleman who was the original owner. It features many aftermarket extras, 38k miles, was well maintained with all the service records. I paid $6000 US. i couldn't be any happier with it.

An exceptionally cheap "all-arounder" that often gets overlooked is the Katana 750. I bought one a couple years ago after I sold my KTM EXC500 . My high school friend suddenly decided to get into motorcycles after 30 years of me trying to convince him. Not wanting to spend much money I found a safetied 2006 Kat with 10k km and 2 brand new tires for 2100$ CDN. At the time I felt like I was making a huge compromise compared to the bikes I've owned in the past but I've come to realize that although this bike isn't exceptional in any particular aspect it does everything well enough to suit all my on-road needs.

The price of used bikes is crazy though. I see two of my bikes being listed at higher price than I put them on the road 4-5 years ago. It is better buying pretty much anything new than used. Saving $1k-$2k to get something five year old will even out in price very quickly. Tires, chain, sprockets, brake pads, clutch, fluids will add up quickly and probably cost way more if you pay for service. Not to mention all those pipes and crap that mechanically clueless are trying to play with because somebody told them that it is cool or they pretend like 5-10lbs makes difference to them even though they maybe put few hundred miles a year.

Recently Bought another 81 Honda CB750 Custom. Had one back when I was 16 (1990). LOVED IT! This one was only $2200 and Looked and Sounded Good when I bought it. Only had 27,500 on it. 10 Rides in and started Stalling out... Need/ed ( still being worked on at time of me typing this ) a Complete Engine Rebuild! and a Few other things. Open the Fuel Tank and it has a Layer of Surface Rust... Couple of holes up near the Exhaust Ports but not to worry about. Exhaust was Plated over with holes drilled in it and a few other Minor Details. $3000 Later and it will be up and running. been Making $500 payments a Month on it and at time of posting this, still have $1235 left. And once it Up and Ridable again, it will be worth it.... To Me... Previous Owner was/is a Dirt Bike Freak and treated it like one..

    Great overview Thx.
Back on a street bike, after 40 years off (crazy long, eh ?).
    I chose a Suzuki Maxi-Scooter, 2006 Burgman 400.
Won't kill myself or meet every cop in East Texas on her.
But sporty fun @ 67 avg mpg.
    Cruises 75-80
    TONS of storage onboard.
Installed a larger Givi Windscreen & toured to San Diego - (2/3 a continent) and back, comfortably.
I'm def considering a nice ADV.
    Probably one of:
    - DR 400/650 or KLR
    - KTM ADV390
    - BMW - sub 1000cc ADV
Not to replace the Maxi-Scoot, but augment it.
Just like I have a hardtail Mountain Bike, and a Road Bike, for the Trails & Asphalt too.
Just some perspective, I'm 58 & had from age 14-20 about 7 Enduro & Street bikes, buying used hasn't changed.
    In fact, it's near identical,
buy with season in your favor, have cash, negotiate & (hidden key) be willing to walk away !
My best buy "back in the day" was a showroom perfect 1980 Yamaha DT250 (silver) with 2500 miles, in 1981 from a departing Navy Sailor who sailed away the next day !
He'd paid like $1400 new from El Cajon Yamaha the year before, and though his ad asked $750, I was a broke high school sophomore with only $600.
    He TOOK IT.
I was elated for quite some time.
Dude was almost crying over it.
I said "you're desperate, but so am I, the Navy pays you a paycheck, I mow lawns for $5 a wack. So who's more broke ? It's like you're helping a little brother out".
He left our transaction a little less depressed 😔 !

As much as I like the Shadow, the Best deal in the cruiser world is the Honda VTX 1300 line. You can find them all day long for pennies. Shaft drive means hardly any maintenance, single carb can be rebuilt in an hour if needed. Single pin crank like a Harley so it sounds great. And it’s a Honda, so it’ll run for approximately 400 years.

A sweet list! The UK market is a little different but a commonality is that you can get a pre-VTEC VFR800 or an ST1100 for under £2k pretty handily. I'm currently on a V-Strom 650 but I'm pretty tempted to give a V4 a go whilst they're still available so cheap. Sure, servicing can be expensive but I don't think prices can really go any lower on these things.

All my bikes are older, mostly Hondas; singles, twins and a 350 Four. Didn't pay a fortune for any of them and they are all smaller, less than 650cc and easy to maintain and get parts for.
That keeps them affordable with high high fun factor.

I returned to motorbikes after 25 years, and being in the UK I looked at sporty lower capacity beginner or intermediate bikes... preferably Japanses but some Truimph options also stood out (Street Triple looking at you). I decided on the conservative cost effective route and bought a 2018 Kawaski Ninja 400 and 6 months later I am not regretting it. What a fun machine, performs like an old 750 with way better handling. Not to be under estimated, even in Canada or USA where cc's tend to be higher.

Those SV650s are pretty sweet but I've not seen any GS since at least 1996 with a wet weight under 500 pounds. Prices on used bikes have been pretty high for the last year or two and new bikes may lose tax, shipping and incidental fees when rolling off the showroom but for the last couple years the values haven't been falling like they traditionally did before the pandemic.
Personally if I'm looking for a good used bike finding one from an older owner who has done the maintenance required, has the original equipment with the farkles, rides the bike a thousand miles or so a year, has a transferable extended warranty on any brand is the holy grail.
That is the way I sell my used bikes. My next one I'm selling is a 2020 BMW R9T/5 in Lupine blue.

You forgot this and that. But I like having the KLR-650 and the ZX10r when I want to go stupid fast. But the KLR got out of hybernation the other day and it didn't do bad at all. Maybe it was the jetting change I did or checked the tire pressure. But was doing 85 no problem. With the front drive gear change I have planned it should do even better on the highway.

Moving to CO from FL, scoping in advance for dual sport or adv, and the motorcycle market there is down right depressing. Dealers tacking 2k+ above msrp and 6mo wait lists, and a non existent used market.

Interesting fact: When I bought my ‘21 Low Rider S brand new, back in February….. it was less expensive than a used ‘21 Low Rider S at the same dealership! Why? They said it was because they can offer rebates and basically are more motivated to sell a new bike vs a used bike. Besides, it was February 2022 and it was the last, remaining, ‘21 model still on the lot so they needed it gone.

A guy met me at a swap meet and showed me a picture of a beautiful 1967 BSA 250 Starfire. It had six thousand original miles on it. $500 delivered to my house. Came with a Victor alloy tank as well. The BSA 250 single and all of it's versions from commuter bike to Enduro bike they are just a great little bike and beautiful to look at from any angle. I got a real British single motorcycle for a chance the price of the Indian made fake. Is that a good deal or what?

Private Sales are nice but if you don't have the cash on hand you're pretty much up a Creek without a paddle and if you have pretty decent or really good credit getting a loan for like a ninja 400 or a Honda Rebel or CPR 500, 300, R3 bikes in those ranges aren't exactly unreasonable in price and if you're new to the riding experience in my opinion they are the best platform to learn on and grow I mean I'm going on my third year with my ninja 400 and I'm still happy riding it everyday.

    • @DifferentSpokesTV
      @DifferentSpokesTV  2 роки тому +1

Yes, the 300-400cc class is best bought new as the used bikes aren't much less expensive than new ones. A Ninja 400 is a good sized bike even for experienced riders.

Keeping my old Vulcan, you have just outlined in this video why. Impossible to find any dealer bikes to try out, and ridiculous prices on newish other bikes. There are some that I´m curious to try but for the moment the market is insane. So keeping what I have, for yet another season.

Old Harleys with the Evolution engine, 1984-1999 can be had for $4000, often with less than 40,000 miles. Many are pristine owned by old men that spent more time polishing than riding. Those old men are getting too old to ride and are letting them go.
