Has anyone built a robot with extending drill? Maybe one try and pin the other robot and drill right in to it?
@@jonathanjollimore7156 mecha tentomushi was one of the more successful versions of this plan, it would trap the other BattleBots under a children's sandbox lid, and then saw into it. Ran in the lightweight class iirc, where the average robot size would fit that plan. Larger classes were usually much stronger so it would be harder to pin, especially if you got the other bot sideways on. It's part of why the most successful designs were pretty general. Deadblow, Minion, ziggo, mjolnir, Vlad the impaler, toro. All take their one mechanic and do it super well
This bot kicked my BUTT multiple times in BattleBots ... I loved Grant's ability to engineer and think through these challenges. That hammer? Went through my bot like butter. Spiked it RIGHT to the floor. BAM.

That high pressure air canister turned that titanium hammer into a murderbot. If Grant could line it up just right ( and he could... ) pretty much nothing would survive.
How do you think Deadblow would fare VS heavy spinning weapon bots like Tombstone and Copperhead? I remember watching Deadblow in the show on Comedy Central and the arm on the first hammer broke. In one of its fights it set the Battlebots record for number of hits.
Really cool to hear the stories of other bot builders that opposed Grant's bot. Which bot did you work on Martin?
@@greggv8 Not very well, only because it's a bit older and it's hammer doesn't have the power to get through the new armors, but mostly because Deadblow was a middleweight and not a heavyweight, so it would get hit far and pushed fairly easily.
I got legitimately choked up at the end of last years Battlebots season as they announced their yearly awards. They named the award for most innovative new robot the Grant Imahara Award.
“Grantness” - such a lovely idea woven through his creations and the memories shared by those who miss him so.
It's sad we are talking about him in the past tense. There is a lot of passion engrained into this battlebot. Yes, grantness is very appropriate.
Akin to greatness. He was so proficient at engineering, good at presenting and seemed like such a great guy. Never met him, but I wish I had. I miss him, and those days of watching every episode of MythBusters. Thanks for this.

Grant Imahara, Adam and Battlebots shaped my childhood. They introduced me to making and engineering when I was 15 years old and eventually inspired me to invest in this field. Made my first 6WD rover out of servos and scrap acrylic panels. Now 21 after 6 years of investing in my small workshop, I have plans of taking second degrees in mechanical and electrical engineering to pursue my passion in robotics. Hit hard when Grant died last year.

Aye. Grew up watching Mythbusters: Grant was my favourite B-Team member (you could tell he loved what he did just from his attitude, made the B-Team a lot more fun and interesting.), and hearing the news of his passing torpedoed my mood for a solid few days. I genuinely grieved losing one of my childhood idols. In fact, I only learned he had participated in combat robotics until after he passed away: I had just assumed his being a BattleBots judge was because of his engineering experience from MythBusting (plus it’s good PR to have a celebrity cameo!) over the years.
Robots, be they for fighting, building, healing, or companionship, will always interest me thanks to Grant’s excitement towards the engineering problems thrown at him on Mythbusters and his inventive ways of automating the riskier or more delicate tasks.
Rest easy, Grant. You were, and still are, a hero: to all of us.

Imahara's precision in this design is amazing. And the mental image of him riding into the shop atop Deadblow is amazing.
I always remember him with the remote control going 'go get him boy!' and the little robot scurrying off down the aisle
I didnt hear about Grants passing till a couple days ago. I always loved him on myth busters. He always seemed very down to earth and passionate about what he did. He had an impact on people beyond his recognition. Love seeing this! RIP Grant.

I must have been 11 or 12, I saw deadblow on Battlebots, and thought "wait isn't that the new guy on Mythbusters?" I went on my mom's computer and somehow found Grant's PERSONAL email on one of his websites. I emailed him saying how much I love Deadblow, and how much work that went into it. How I want to build them when I grow up. How I liked seeing him on the "new" show called Mythbusters. HE EMAILED BACK. I've since lost the email, but he told me battlebots take a lot of knowledge in many areas, but it's an absolute blast, and how he'd love to see my bot one day. I never made one but now I want to even more, even if it's just a 3lb Beetleweight
I remember my first and last attempt at Battlebots, shipping, flying down, unpacking and rebuilding, and not giving myself enough time to work out why it didn't work right at the event. But it was all worth it, when in the midst of my realization of my bot not working in time to compete, Grant walks up to me in the pits and starts asking me questions about my bot and stating he was impressed with frame material design.
I've never missed a "celebrity" more then Grant Imahara. Seeing this part of him is such a great healing experience & seeing just a passionate side of him.
I, like many others, owe my being an engineer to grant Imahara and deadblow. It was the realisation that you could find unparalleled joy in chasing perfection

Deadblow is the definition of battlebots. I remember watching deadblow destroy the competition right before mythbusters aired. Seeing it involved in some of the myths made me so excited.
Rip grant. I spent many years watching you on TV and you were such an inspiration.
I truly love when you can tell someone just absolutely loves what they do, and having a ton of those people in the same place in the same niche. Grant was one of those people who clearly loved making, engineering, and robotics. Such a tragic loss but he gave us so much.
Between battle bots and myth busters, Grant was able to inspire an entire generation of makers/tinkers and the world is better for it, thanks for all the great memories Grant!
I still can't believe we're talking about Grant in the past, it makes me so sad. RIP you legend, you and the rest of the crew made my childhood so much better, I rewatched Mythbusters in its entirety to remember the good times. 😢
Grant one of those people that achieved 'immortality' thru his actions, his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of those that knew him, an amazing person, we could all do with a bit more Grantness in our lives.
Man, the world just doesn’t know what was lost when Grant passed away. The amount of intelligence, problem solving skills, learning capability, and pure love of humanity and desire to make the world a better place. Just amazing man.
I was puzzled by the shoptour as Deadblow sat there and was completely ignored for the tour... but as you made a separate segment for it, now I understand.
And - yes - I'd hug Deadblow, too!

I competed at one of the early Battlebots events and met Grant there. Super nice guy, he gave us some help with design issues on our robot where the keys holding our wheels on the shafts kept shearing through. I remember that the big secret to Deadblow's hammer was that he was running it off a high-pressure compressed air tank instead of the carbon dioxide tanks that everyone else was using. Carbon dioxide had the issue where it has to absorb heat to go from liquid to gas, and the tank eventually gets cold and freezes up if you're drawing from it too quickly, but the high-pressure compressed air can keep firing the hammer until the tank is completely empty. It looks like he's also using the old EV Warrior motors for driving it unless I'm mistaken - those were a model of high-torque DC motor originally designed for a failed electric bicycle project that ended up in a lot of robots.
I know for the general public Battlebots was a pretty cheesy show, but back in 2000/2001 my dad and I thought we could build one. We watched the show every week, and tore apart a lawn mower to use as the base for a bot. He passed away a few months after that, and Battlebots has always held a special place in my heart since then. Thank you for sharing those memories of Grant, I know I remember his bot greatly from watching Battlebots.
For such a sweet guy normally, get him behind a battle bot and he’s a killer. Much love to you all, seeing this pop up makes my day. Thank you Grant.

My high school district had a robotics competition every year just like battlebots, 100 lb weight class. That is what brought me into engineering, and is how I got to where I am today. Grants shop and seeing the guts of Deadblow just gets my gears turning. Rest in peace Grant.

I’ve cried a few times since hearing about his passing. He always seemed like such a good person and was smiling.
These videos are extremely therapeutic to watch. There have only been two deaths that truly touched my soul - Grant Imahara and Chadwick Boseman. One reason both cut so deeply was due to how they not only impacted me, but my children as well (now teenagers). My kids are definitely "tech nerds" and Grant truly allowed them to feel proud of who they were. Grant demonstrated for them how to live authentically, that is was okay to go full speed ahead with your passions, and that anything worth doing is worth doing well.
My eldest (15) participated in his first small scale battle robot competition last year, and honoring Grant had a lot to do with his choice. His robot wasn't great, but he did it. He was the only minor participating and he held his own. We asked him what he wanted for his upcoming 16th birthday - his only request was to participate in the local robot battle competition. That is Grant's legacy. Thank you so much for sharing even more of Grant with us!
Thank you Adam and Fon and all who are doing a great job of remembering Grant. I was inspired by him and you all when I was in middle school, and that inspired me to build combat robots and become an engineer myself. Thank you!

It's really cool seeing Deadblow one last time. I remember watching Battlebots as a kid and Deadblow was always one of my favorites. In high school I even bought Grant's book Kickin' Bot as reference material for my senior project where I built my own bot. Funnily enough, I never connected the dots that Grant on Mythbusters was the same Grant that wrote the book until he brought Deadblow in to help test some myths.
I have some fond memories of that book. I remember checking it out from my library and reading it back when I was 13 or so. I also didn't make the connection that it was the same Grant from Mythbusters until I was somewhere near the end of it.
The maniacal laugh whenever he completed a robot is also one of my favorite Grant-isms!
Most of us only knew Grant via the show, but still feel much affection for him. I love how these bits bring that affection to the surface for me - thank you!
Whats crazy is that little battlebot, while formidable, is only a small part of this shop while at the same time representing its own era of Grant's life and achievements. Its as though everything he touched was a passion project. Truly operated on a different level!
Thank you Adam and Fon for going over his bot. It really made me feel like I understand Grant a little better in some weird way. Thank you Grant for everything you brought to science and robotics and to everyone you helped turn to science. Thank you.
I watched Grant on Battlebots and it was both my introduction to battling robots and to Grant. I loved it then and love it still. Grant helped inspire me to try looking at problems from new angles to see if I could find a way that wasn’t the “typical”. Thank you Adam and Fon for these videos. Sharing your memories and love of Grant is both so hard and so warm at the same time. It still feels so unreal that Grant is gone. ❤️
Grant, you will be missed so much. ❤️ That said, I think it's *wonderful* that, behind the "scenes," the bot-builders would trade secrets and totally respect each other as builders and roboticists. It's a rare thing.

Grant was one of those unique fun people that everyone just loved and still loves. I hate that he's gone.
I almost made it through this one! Almost! The wanting to hug the battlebot at the end got me. Just wanting to be close to someone you miss so much by being in their room, holding a toy, or putting on their jacket it so palpable and universal. Thanks Adam and tested. I miss Grant too.
I have a metal, working mini Deadblow that Grant autographed and mailed back up here to Canada🇨🇦 . He was such a generous guy!

Every comment section for the videos on Grant’s workshop is full of people talking about how Grant personally influenced them. It’s amazing to see how many lives he touched. Grant may be gone, but his spirit definitely lives on.
I met Grant once, and he was so lovely and encouraging, I immediately felt a connection. I can only imagine how hard it must be for those who were close to him and lived him. Just seeing his shop is emotional
Grant, and the team at Mythbusters... I dont think I can overstate how much a haven the show was for me as a kid. It really planted the seed for me. I'm super lucky to have a career I love in engineering, test and evaluation. So much of it is because of the joy you all had and shared while making and breaking awesome stuff! Had a lump in my throat watching this.

The whole time I was watching I kept thinking "Why do they keep talking about him like he is dead?" Sad to find out this way but glad to see great friends remembering and talking about such an awesome man.
Grant and Deadblow are the entire reason why I’m on my high school robotics team and plan to pursue mechanical engineering in college. It got me interested in robotics and engineering when I was eight years old, and it changed my life course completely. His death hit me hard last year. I’ll always be grateful for Grant’s influence on my life.

I miss Grant, he was just one of those guys you could relate to but he was a friggin genius and had such a nice demeanour to him, would of loved to have a coffee with him discussing all things robot...he was a fountain of knowledge.

its 'Grantness' is why you want to hug it. All of his work and care with the bot gave it an echo of his soul, and then you add in the very special memories that it invokes, you have part of his immortality.

Happy Birthday Grant! We miss you your bot is the stuff of legends. I remember when Grant won the Bronze Nut in Season 1, 2, and 3 of BattleBots. Grant and Jamie also built two other bots for the series including Robot Wars and Robotica Sargent Bash and Blindo both have also been retired. When Scottie and Christine left Grant was chosen until the end of Mythbusters. He was the best we will miss you Grant. #RIPGrantImahara and Happy Birthday from the great beyond.
I love the Grant segments. Shows what a truly amazing guy he was and how his loss impacted his friends and fans.
Ah this brings back so many memories. I remember when Battlebots first became a thing, and I remember Grant being involved, and of course having watched Mythbusters in its entirety multiple times, you see that same "Grantness" in some of the builds he undertook.
Everything about this just makes me miss Grant even more... It's really a terrible shame to have lost someone like him. I was glad to donate to his foundation and hope that it will inspire people to find their own inner "Grantness".

Grant was such a humble, enthusiastic and nice person.
As much as he was an engineering genius it's his kindness and calm demeanour that had the biggest impact on me.
I still can't accept the injustice of his death though. I don't think I ever will.

Thank you for these videos. The raw emotion from Adam and Fon is so palpable it easily conveys through a computer screen. It's very apparent they both forget about the camera, and it makes the viewer seem like they are just standing in the room...kudos!!!

Watching episodes like this has me smiling with joy all the way through. He is gone but will never be forgotten....at least by me, my wife or either of my daughters who love Mythbusters now at 6 and 10.
This is absolutely crazy. I can't believe Deadblow is still assembled after all these years. It was simple, yet effective at what it did. One of my favorites.
Grant was always fun to watch. He was a genius at robotics and was a perfect addition to Mythbusters. I loved his cameo appearance on the final episode of Eureka and his portrayal of Lt. Sulu in the series Star Trek Continues. There didn't seem to be anything Grant couldn't do. It was heartbreaking to hear about his passing at such a young age.
I remember watching Deadblow on Battlebots before Grant joined Mythbusters. Deadblow was one of my favorites, along with Minion. I even had several models of Deadblow. I didn't remember Grant at all until Mythbusters pointed out he was behind Deadblow and he even used Deadblow on a myth or two. Damn, it's a shame to lose a guy like Grant at such a young age.
I can't think of any better way to remember Grant than by talking and enjoying his creations.

I never met Grant, I just watched him on TV, BUT every time I see something about him my eyes always well up with tears. Gone but not forgotten.

"I have this uncontrollable urge to hug Grant's robot." Well I'm not surprised. It shows aspects of who Grant was as a person and how his mind worked. I'd feel the same if I knew him the way you guys did. I will admit seeing that bot made me tear up a little.

Thank you for this stop and look and sharing about Deadblow. A family favorite bot (so much it even got a nickname, "Lil Pecker"). When I saw Grant on Mythbusters, I knew I knew him from some where. When we saw his bot in an episode was this huge "OMG he's that guy!" moment. Really touching. #TheFeels

Definitely tell they’re still finding things to relive memories. It’s been well over a year and they’re just soaking in everything. A moment of healing and cherishing everything. He will always be one of those people I grew up watching on TV. That I fondly remember from the crazy stuff done on Mythbusters.
