I grew up on this one too It kind of sucks everyone says dark dawn sucks, and I guess when compared to the old games its definitely vastly different, but as it stands alone I think its a perfectly valid game.
One point I hate, there is ONE untelegraphed point of no return in the game. Konpa Cave. The other two (Craggy Peak and Belinsk) are both told to the player "It'll be difficult if not impossible to return this way. Make sure you've finished what you have to do!" With the former, you can in fact return to those locations (barring Craggy Peak itself and the Zodiac Dungeon) later, and Belinsk flat out says it's a one way trip. Hell, even Konpa Cave is hinted, since the enemies are clearly trying to split the party, so it it makes logical sense they would prevent you from doubling back. There are gripes to make, but misrepresenting this one isn't one of them.
It's important to keep in mind that I've only played this game once, and thus I may be prone to information. I'm all for being corrected. However, the only instance I truly agree with your counter-argument is with Passaj to Craggy Peak. That I absolutely agree was a well-telegraphed and fine use of a point of no return, especially because eventually you can go back to that area later in the game. Frankly, I don't remember where it was said that Belinsk was a one way trip. Can we blame my faulty memory for that? Sure, and I'll own up to that. But there wasn't that clear cut moment where I was aware I am undoubtedly going into a point of no return. Hints and logical sense alone do not justify it. Even then, my criticism of the points of no return wasn't even focused on how they were telegraphed. I wanted to emphasize the point that because of their inclusion, it makes it possible to miss gameplay tools such and just makes the world feel smaller. Me saying that I felt they were untelegraphed was just one passing mention in that section. Now I will apologize if that remark implied the who game was equally guilty of what Konpa Cave did. But barring that, the rest of my issues with their implementation still stand.
Good summary. I feel the same about pretty much everything. Story only really got going half way through. Points of no return suck. Didn't wipe until final boss (where i then realised the other 4 characters step in lol). However, just being in the universe again and hearing the music put a big smile on my face. I enjoyed some of the later dungeon puzzles and they put a lot of effort into weapon specials and summons. Could've been better, but it was a relief to get something and I hope it can continue from the cliffhanger on the Switch.
Golden Sun (1 and 2) deserves a remake for nintendo switch, and Golden Sun 4 need to narrate the conclusión of the history of Isaac and his comrades, and Anlex is the Sephiroth of the game we need Issac and Felix battle him in some point of the history, I really love this game, I have good memories from the 3 games. Good vídeo man and excuse my regular english.
Dark Dawn is my favorite DS game and I love that there's someone out there who loves it as much as I do I've plaid it so much I wore out the map that came in my guide book lol
Okay, I just binged your first four Golden Sun videos, and MAN. These are so good! Great job, Chris. And I’m glad you still enjoyed Dark Dawn, especially hot off the heels of The Lost Age. I really liked this game too. Yeah, the story could’ve been better, it was too easy, and there weren’t near enough returning characters (especially Jenna and Felix). That said, Karis may be my third favorite in the series, and I honestly love almost all the characters in this game. Besides, I still had such a great time just getting to play a third Golden Sun game. …But I’m still dying for a Golden Sun 4…
I've actually been re-playing Golden sun, this is the first time I've ever actually been to crossbone Isle let alone defeated dread beard. Childhood me just gave up at Venus light house and never played the other GBA game, I skipped it and went right to dark dawn when it came out. I thought it was fun then but I still had some gripes about it.
Your video made me complete ebay checkout. I was just looking for reason to buy an old rpg that was fun and not costing $150+. It's always difficult as a consumer to wade through reviews of everyone that plays everything and has little to no concern about casuals like myself... which I think is always the reason for franchise retread. Developers get it. You're one of the few YTubers that also get it, or at least the duality.
I love this game to death. The new psynergy and weapon unleashes, 3D special effects, the intimation of elements that may exist in the shadow cast by the Golden Sun event and alchemy, the Zols, Crystallux, the Eclipse Tower puzzles, but I concur with all of these criticisms. That said, people have a nauseating tendency to blow them out of proportion. Anyway, between the limiting scope, unanswered and contradictory plot threads and of course, the cliffhanger, I wonder what happened behind the scenes. I hear tell that Camelot has refused to take a stab at another Golden Sun game because of executive meddling that threw plans for this installment off course, but I have yet to find anything to verify this claim. At any rate, it annoys me that the series remains in this weird limbo when it obviously has so much more to offer. I honestly wish GS4 were announced at E3 2014 INSTEAD of Splatoon. That would by itself be an infinitely better timeline than the one we’re living in now, and perhaps via Butterfly Effect would have even negated all the hardships humanity has been through since.
Thank you for your positivity on this game. I was a bit disappointed by difficulty and the aesthetics, but they improved several things and the psynergie ds System is great. Its a golden sun game and i wish there were more of them
This was my first game in the series. I love it so much and it was a huge part of my childhood. It holds a big spot in my heart and will always be one of my favorites. Literally, the only things I didn't like about the game was that there were some djinn you could completely miss due to points of no return and that they gave us a cliffhanger ending that (as of now) hasn't been resolved yet
I'm stunned nobody ever mentions this. But right before the final boss you can level up from lvl 30 to 99 in 40 minutes flat on the recurring grunts enemy. It completely takes away from the end game lvl grind I loved for the super boss in TLA.
I loved the first two growing up and I've had dark dawn sitting around for years I'm finally gonna start it and I'm looking forward to it. It's actually really random how I found out about it. It was so long ago and I was so young I didnt know what I was searching for I think I was just going to game store websites and clicking on anything that looked like final fantasy and it just so happened the first one was coming out in a couple days and I just happened to find it and see pictures of how cool it looked
So, I was only 12 when dark dawn came out, and I regretfully didn't really get into playing video games until I met my best friend in high school, so I never played the first two. And by the time I fell in love with dark dawn, I didn't have a game boy to even consider playing the first two. So to this day dark dawn is the only game in the series I've played. From this perspective, I can say that this is one of my all time favorite games! I've played through it a couple times and I think I'm going to do so again! And I can say that if another golden sun game ever came out, I'd jump on that in a new york second!
About Jenna not appearing: She is supposedly residing in Kalay as the game mentioned in a dialogue but.. that place is never visited and alongside some other.. information about the game, I think the game had quite some cut content around. For example: You can see two of the four elemental lighthouses on the worldmap, but trying to visit those places is pretty much undoable, and from how it looks like they were supposed to be visitable and perhaps linked to the Apollo Sanctum area. And why Felix & Sheba aren't appearing imo is more of a Tuaparang interference and "would you like to know what is going on in the western part of this world?" moment. Let's one wonder when Golden Sun 4 is about to show up so that the missing links get connected, like I finally wanna see how Takeru looks like who's trying to rescue Felix, who might be traveling around with Piers due to what the game teased. While at it, Nowell might very well be the mercury adept of GS4's first party due to what was also being teased and sounding like is going on with the builtup for GS4.
My biggest problem with this game to be real, was the constant cock teasing of Arcana. We know you’re Alex, even Kraden knows you’re Alex. Really wish we’d have learned more about him after how he became the most interesting character in the second half of Lost Age. Entire game felt like a prologue which is fine when it’s marketed that way, little easier to get the green light for the sequel 😔
Camelot really needs to be asked to make a new one instead of yet another ,Mario Sports game. I can only imagine how great one would be for switch(or next system)
Golden Sun, dark dawn could have been a much larger game. Then what previously people actually think about? Because there's so many and I mean so many unused unexplored continent with two lighthouses, appearance. That it makes me personally believe that This game could have been originally was supposed to be longer and More nations too explorable But due to some type of shortcomings, they ditched it. And I think the Sorewings was a good example of this. It could have been originally used To explore these places since the continents were so shifted away from each other However, they ended up scrapping it, leaving unused and Unedited product in the game, which is cool to explore if you know how to use your glitches. And jump out of bounds, which is probably one of the most amazing things about golden sun dark as it keeps the traditional God like dimensional power glitches Which allows you to walk in mid air phase through walls and dimensions and even explorer Unexplore places that just looks so freaking, unique and cool. I love golden sun, dark dawn. It is amazing game And I still enjoy it. And let's not forget about golden sun's lost age Infamous secret world Which in my younger years? I actually mapped out when you jump out of bounds near the end of the game. Only us hardcore professional players knows about these. Secret Of golden sun. Now golden sun dark dawn has much more challenging glitches, which makes it extremely difficult To perform but once you Learn how to do them. With some help, you'll be able to achieve it. Piers should have been playable at some point during the ship section/ A reunion in Kalay should have happened after the eclipse started. The summons should not have been split up across two screens with a big section missing. Te 2D of 2002 worked better than janky 3D for lots of effects as well (not universal). All in all your shake is very fair and enthusiatc and I experienced much of what you describe here
The Mars Star was an item in Golden Sun 1 that you get fairly early in the game. It was just a plot maguffin and served no gameplay function. These games also don't have a seperate key items tab, so it takes up one of the 60 possible item slots that whole time.
My gripe list for Dark Dawn is short, mostly limited to the 3 points of no return, only 2 new dual elemental classes, and the fact the djinn tutorial asks if you're familiar before spitting out "can't be to sure!"
The biggest thing that Dark Dawn suffers from is that it is very clearly setting up a new series of games...that never actually got made because of how poorly received it was. It feels more like a prologue than a complete story in and of itself.
Well, the first two games are widely and wisely considered as masterpieces for 20+ years, and this one just got a meh. Not playing with the original characters is one of the reasons, those flaws that were mentioned here, and the 3D graphics were disappointing to me (they should stayed pixel art).
Why does the next gen game look SO BAD. Maybe it's petty but the way it's SO UGLY was the biggest reason I didn't play it. I hate it when they shoehorn in useless 3d that looks like crap.
I love dark dawn, it was my introduction to the golden sun series, I remember playing it when I was younger
Same
Were you all too young to remember gba? Gameboy Advance? The first 2 were the best n most classic imo
@@67nBrynhurstCuh I never said the old games are bad, I just like dark dawn, trust me I wouldn't put dark dawn above them

Hey man, great video! I found this through the Golden Sun subreddit. I believe you have a lot of potential as a youtuber!
I just finished watching the entire thing :)
The sudden turn into excitement at the end was pure brilliance. Loved it!
