Our family use the cooking spice, ground ginger as a tea. My english grandad loved it, said ginger toddy to warm the body, all the time. Nan-nan would make a pot of it, to go around You make hot water, pour a cup put a small bit of dry, ground ginger on a teaspoon, just on the end. Stir it ino your cup of hot water, milk and sugar it. Mum swore by it for indigestion, and pregnancy, morning sickness. Ginger can help with car-sickness, I drink a bundy ginger beer 20 minutes before going up or down our mountain ranges, we have 4 in North Queensland they always set me off otherwise. Have you ever made an ice-cream float? It's great with ginger beer, or sarsparilla. I can tell you how if you want to? You need a long glass a straw and a parfait spoon.

It is a bush turkey chick, I had them hatch in my yard in Nambour. As soon as they hatch, they are independent and they can run like the blazes. The parents do not raise them so that chick had no Mum to care for it. The way they dig themselves out of the mound is totally amazing. They hatch feet up and have to dig upwards to escape the nest. They are shy birds, but nice.

Coming from Queensland, I buy Buderim Ginger Marmalade at the supermarket in Melbourne to remind me of home. Love it, great on crumpets.
I've been to the Ginger Factory heaps of times, mainly showing relos around. Buderim Ginger used to be located up on the mountain at Buderim, hence the name. The land in Buderim was far more valuable as housing development so they sold there and moved to Yandina in 1978. Buderim is pronounce 'Bud-rim'.

Yes - a baby turkey. Once they hatch they look after themselves. Dad's job is done.

Mum's job is done once she lays the eggs. Dad hatches them in his temperature-controlled mound. Mum shoots through and would never recognise her offspring even if she happens to bump into them.

We used to drive past the ginger factory every year on the way to Caloundra for a family holiday. Mum would pick up 4 or 5 huge bags of the crystallised ginger, we'd be eating it for months. Great stuff!

Did you know that palms are actually grasses rather than trees? Trees have deep roots and wide branches while palms have leafy fronds that grow out of the main stem, die and fall off and grow new ones continually reaching upwards.

50 years ago as a kid I'd call into the ginger factory on our way to taking my mates dad some lunch. He'd be harvesting cane so we'd walk there then wander around the factory munching raw sugar cane on our way home. Nice to see the old place still going.

no mum for a scrub turkey the male builds the mound the females lay their eggs and leave. the male regulates the temperature of the mound by adding and removing material until the chicks hatch and they are fully independent from then on.

That cooked sweet ginger is good for you, just one piece a day helps your digestion. It keeps really well in an airtight container in the pantry. You get used to the heat because it’s not fiery like a chilli, more of a rich warming going on.
