Another Walk Through Melbourne // Parliament to Southern Cross!

- Join me on a slow walk through Melbourne's inner city, starting just east of the CBD on Macarthur Street, then heading south down Spring St, along Flinders St to Federation Square, up Swanston St, the west along Bourke Street to Southern Cross station. Our focus is on viewing some of Melbourne's excellent passenger rail transport, but we also see a bunch of other stuff along the way!
This is obviously a very long-form video and probably won't be to everyone's taste, but the aim of this kind of thing is to capture a snapshot of the city at this particular moment in time, and will hopefully be even more interesting in the future.

My senior cit mum and I walked from Southern Cross to Parliament last weekend. Met at Spencer st, lunched at RACV Club, saw a play at Her Majesty's theatre, and trained it home from Spring st. It was kinda cool to walk the length of the CBD - albeit with some lengthy stops along the way

This video almost perfectly covers the areas of Melbourne I've been working in for the last couple of years. I used to work around here at 7:08 until October last year, well more up Wellington Parade towards Jolimont Station and the MCG. It was a lovely area, it was quiet for most of the year except when the footy was on and you could hear the sirens from the MCG at Grand Final time. As part of that job I had to travel to our other site in Carlton every so often, so it was easy getting the train through the loop to Melbourne Central and get a tram on Swanston Street, or if I had the time, I'd go to Finlders Street and get a tram along Swanston Street towards Melb Uni which was close to that office in Carlton. Then to return back through the loop the other way to Jolimont when I needed to head back. It was a fun job and going accross the city was one of my favourite parts about it.
Since January I'm currently working near Southern Cross on Bourke Street so the sound of the E-class bell and horn is ambient noise lol. I don't get to travel as much with this job so I kinda miss that, but I often travel down Bourke Street Mall or head up to Batman Park near the viaduct on my lunch breaks, so I see the C2 trams often enough but not a common sight. There are some restruants and cafes down some of the lanes on Bourke Street, but I agree more variety other than overpriced clothes would be nice. I don't think I could ever get bored being in this city tbh, and honestly I enjoy being here more rather than going to Sydney or other places, despite it being local and being a native Victorian.
Excellent video as always, love the nice long videos exploring a city to which I myself have never been. If you make a third walk video, I suggest you start the video as a C2 class tram is in shot so we can finally have each type of operating Melbourne tram in the video.

Loved the second walk vlog, Bourke Street Mall is one of my favourite locations to take images and at the time of putting up this clip, busses are currently replacing trains between Camberwell and Box Hill until late May.
I do everything in my power to avoid getting off at Box Hill, I have never encountered such aggressive ticket inspectors.

@@RenNeyra still disputing 2 fines, over 500 in total. first time was i forgot myki, second time was the machine at lilydale was broken. i dont have the time or energy to report it tbh. every other station has had fairly pleasant staff though, it just seems box hill are not so nice
Great video Martin. One thing you might mention re Federation Square is that the geometric pattern in its architecture (such as you can see at 21:58) is used for the PTV livery - green on the trams (35:20), blue on the metro trains, orange on the buses and purple on the VLine trains (61:46).

Thanks for mentioning the date. Typical summer in Melbourne..she's such an endearing old gal'. When I was eleven years old I started a daily weather journal. If you have never kept a weather record in Melbourne, what you are presented with can be unnerving. 38degrees, one day(not unexpected in Melbourne summer)with a roaring hot northerly wind....feels like everything is gonna' melt. Maybe even later that day, the wind will swing south(default) and its 16degrees, you can just about smell the ice of the Antarctic (where the southerly comes from)and everyone's still wearing shorts and singlets like nothing happened. Those old green W class trams seem to still be running but now with the articulated modernista, "Space X" replacements. keeping them company. Jolimont rail yards branching off to Clifton Hill and beyond.
The intersection of Flinders and Swanston street, beckons. A pot at Young and Jacksons, "Say Hi to Chloe" and the tranquil, hushed interior of St Paul's, the eternal Rococo, Flinders St Terminus building, a grand old dame indeed. The yellow destination/arrival boxes and clockfaces all set and rest by a Navy blue,"VR uniformed" station assistant, with a long wooden reset pole in days gone by. The re assuring bell clang of the W Class tram crossing the right angles and the ever hopeful motorists lined up for a hook turn, where permitted!
What's not to love about "The World's Most Livable City" even with it's new grandiose Australia's Largest City, snatched once again from that upstart Sydney. Will the Goldrush rivalry never end?!
Thanks Taitset for a great wander. I have only reached the 10:00, minute mark at the time of writing. Did you say you are expecting rain later? That never happens in Melbourne! It never rained in Perth for the first three months of 2023 either!

Really nice video. I would love to see a video on what's wrpng with Southern Cross and if you had any ideas to fix it. Not that we can due to it being Private owned. Well done to those that made such a masterstoke of a decision
not enough ventilation, the v line trains give off incredible amounts of pollution that makes it hard to breath in southern cross
The layout of the station is so bad, full of pillars blocking paths, narrow stairs, try exiting at the north end with the foot bridge. You've got kiosks and vending machines blocking sight lines and no subway access to Bourke Street like before.

City I ~know well (lived in Melbourne all my life, just haven't worked in the city for decade+), so most of the time I know exactly where you are & what I'm seeing; then again it's been so many years since I was in the city it's also different...

If you don't mind sharing what camera did you use, and what settings did you put on. I'm just starting myself so still figuring out along the way. I haven't finished watching this yet as I'm typing so apologies if you did mentioned it in the video.
Look forward to more videos like this. As a former Melburnian (just crossed the 10 years anniversary of the day I left) I miss this city every day!

Great video, it reminds me of when I went on holiday to Melbourne last summer. If I'm honest I have always felt that it just feels like Adelaide but on Steroids. Its a shame that the comeng trains are being withdrawn but it was bound to happen eventually, I always found them to be the most comfortable of the trains in Victoria seconded only by the HCMT.
i saw someone recently say that the spencer/bourke intersection needs to have all directional crossing for pedestrians and i think this video shows that its a good idea lol. its super pedestrian heavy but spencer street still largely favours cars
Yeah definitely, most of the cbd intersections are heavily designed around cars, despite them carrying a tiny fraction of the people moving through there.
As someone that uses the swan hill line the furthest distance from Melbourne the n class locomotives and carriages, maybe demoted to service on that line which would be sad for rail fans as all of the other vline lines will have Vlocitys. I personally can still the N class locos and carriages being use for at least another 10-15 years as the comfort onboard is great and a lot of locals from swan hill and Mildura I know love these rolling stock from vline as the seating is 2+3 which is different from all of Victoria passenger rolling stock as the vlocity units seats ar 2+2 seating which should mean the corridor between the chairs should be bigger but it doesn’t compare to the 2+3 from the N class carriages.
Anyway sorry for the ramble but as a regional rail traveler I will miss the n class trains but at least we can still enjoy them as much as possible before they are pulled from service. Awesome video taitset I all find myself learning something from you especially the junction explain videos.

It's attached to my backpack strap! The stabilisation is just what the Hero 10 does in camera. The set up needs to be slightly inconspicuous so it doesn't attract unwanted attention, or make anyone feel uncomfortable.
The dress thing on the lights can be seen as rather regressive actually because the vast majority of women as you can see in your own video wear pants daily and rarely skirts or dresses. Though it is actually very gendered because a man who wears a dress or a skirt is seen as a crossdresser or at best gender nonconforming. Pants are not gendered but dresses are very much gendered, so a figure with pants, or rather a figure without noticeable clothing because that's more accurately what it is, is the most neutral. Furthermore, this symbol is clearly chosen to mirror toilet symbols so while a dress figure is not accurately reflective of what women wear it is absolutely understood to be a woman by everyone. It's transplanting gendered toilet symbols to ungendered light symbols for no reason. It's backwards. It doesn't really matter what symbol is used so long as it is understood, but going out of your way to replace lights and break uniformity is a waste of public money, regressive, and implies an unhealthy obsession with gendering things that were already neutral. It's dragging your backwards mentality into the foreground when everyone else has already progressed beyond it.

I am still amazed that a city as large as Melbourne can be as quite. Looks lovely.
