I'm not "old money",, so me dressing like "old money" will be fakery. Wearing the CC logo because I like it and can afford it is more realistic for me. I'm African, our fabrics are colourful and loud whether or not you have old money. To wear pastels 24/7 goes against my own cultural aesthetic. The quiet luxury community should embrace the "quiet" bit more and stop telling people how to dress.

Absolutely! Honestly if I followed all these new trends that are changing so fast, I would have to get rid of thousands and thousands of dollars worth of clothing, bags, and shoes and buy new ones just to stay on trend. That's ridiculous and an injustice to yourself. I think just be authentic and be yourself, wear what you feel most beautiful and comfortable in. For me that's classic pieces that have been and will be style for ages, mostly neutral tones with some colorful pieces, clean lines, and silhouettes that fit your shape and your body.

This actually happened for generation X int he 90s, too, but without social media there just wasn’t daily internet discussion to talk this to death. Trends come and go so much faster now and what used to be fashion talk for fashion people now has trickled into every household via every phone. I think the strong focus on the QL trend is also due to the rise of FastFashion. We are at the peak of consumption.

It's indicative of the economic cycles. We had a similar turn in high-end fashion during the Great Recession. As the economy rebounded we saw the popularity of logos return (Ex: the Gucci belts, and the Marmount bags) The return of "quiet luxury" means we're either on the brink of or already in another economic downturn.

I disagree. The people that buy heavily logo items are usually (there are exceptions to the rule). They are more concerned with looking rich than the workmanship, quality of materials and fit of the items they are buying. Many of these items are absolutely hideous. I own a more than a few items with logos, but they were purchased several years ago. The logos are usually small and tastefully placed. Large logos are things I try to avoid. If I wear an item with a logo it will be an Hermes belt and maybe a Polo horse. For me, that is already pushing it and bordering on being to garish. Less is more is the motto I live by. Fashion fades. Style lasts forever.

In my opinion, the discussion around quiet luxury comes off as classist because some cultures prefer to showcase their wealth in a more colourful and vibrant way, yet this is often seen as tacky. For example, wealthy individuals from African or Indian backgrounds can also afford luxury, yet when we see images of "old money" or "quiet luxury," the colors are often restricted to beige, black, or gray. It appears that anything beyond these neutral tones is not considered a symbol of luxury or wealth. Personally, I enjoy neutrals in my own style, but I do not judge someone else's fashion choices or have the right to label their style as "classy" or not.

Beyond showcasing wealth, wearing colour and pattern can just be one way of celebrating life, embracing wot the person believe looks best on them (colour theory, hello. Many of us with darker skin also have saturated/high contrast features that work best with punchy colours) or keeping in step with their culture re: an event or some experience or emotion
In many communities, some colours, when worn head to toe, imply that there is a problem! That a family is bereaved, for example. Or that there's some performance about to go down
People should just wear wot they like without casting negative aspersions on others in an attempt to be 'more elegant than thou' and show that they're better than others

The issue with huge logos and monograms is most people buy it exactly for the same reason you are criticizing "quiet luxury" they want to feel superior than the average joe and be admired just because they are "rich" and many people are not even rich but buy things to fit in. If people buy Gucci, Louis Vuitton and the likes just because they find it good quality or they like it, it's ok, but most people buy it to show off and feel superior. Also it's just dumb because they are paying huge amounts of money to be practically a walking billboard.

At the end of the day, they have money! They should be free to spend it however they wish! If they want to dress from top to bottom in Gucci Gucci Gucci, then whats the issue?
Wouldn't the world be boring if we all looked and dressed the same?
My favourite point was the different representations of 'old money' around the world that are being disregarded in this new money, old money Feud. For example I know wealthy South African people who choose to dress in their Traditional regalia 95% of the time but have had money for generation and can afford to buy from Brunello Cucinelli but refuse to. Eg: the king of Eswatini and his wives and kids, most of the time they are in traditional regalia.

How is quiet luxury problematic when all luxury started out quiet? It's just reverting back to what it originally was. Every fashion lover should read how luxury lost its luster by Dana Thomas. quit luxury and old money aesthetic are two different things. yes the two can have some overlap as old money likes some of the quiet luxury brands but the two are not the same. old money aesthetic is old Ralph Lauren ads specifically purple label and RL collection and the Kennedy family vibes. quiet luxury is no logos and up until the late 80s to 90s when logo mania became a thing luxury was always quiet. Keep in mind Chanel didn't even have the double cc logo until 1984 so what was she doing prior NOTHING just like all the other fashion houses they just made clothes. It's not problematic what's problematic is Tik Tok and people on other platforms calling something a trend when it's not. Everyday People whether its luxury or not dress"quiet"

I agree everyone should wear whatever they please but an outfit doesn’t have to have a logo for it to be quality. The initial conversation of quiet luxury had nothing to do with the race it had more to do with answering the question that a lot of American women were asking and lot of non-American women were asking, and the question was what type of clothing and accessories would help them be more leveled up in their dating life and their work life and other social circles. And that was it, and typically the advice back, then was to look at your culture your personal culture to look at the environment you lived in and the environment Rhodes who you wanted to get to know lived in. You looked at real people who you see every day who appear to be well dressed what about them inspires you to want to be better dressed yourself And you were supposed to take note of the fabrics how their make up was applied. You know just taking notes of what did you see? What about this specific person gives off this vibe of being classy and elegant what drew you do the person you know how was their hair done? What type of fragrance were they wearing? The quiet luxury advice was basically just a blueprint. That was how it started with a blueprint blueprint that people have thrown around repackage thrown around again, and decided to do this versus that.

“Quiet Luxury” is now becoming a class issue in exclusivity, in that one group of people can afford a specific brand that others cannot. It is a division of people, places and things. My thoughts are you can’t really tell what is luxury brand and what is an HM brand, as clothes are just utilitarian aspect of clothing oneself…so get over it people.

@@Ali-py2ck No. as I stated before quiet Luxury is a class issue. Just because it’s expensive does not make it better, in fact there are 4 levels of the same design to fill the need of consumer desires. Example: One sweater made at different price points: very high level, high level, mid level, low level. Made from different knits but it does the same job…keeps you warm. Hence the reason Bernard Arnault is so wealthy, he understands the division of class and the stupidity of consumers.

On top of that, people who prefer old money anesthetic and portray it as better most often don't realize that the way they dress was probably described as scandalous, snobby or tacky back in the day.

I totally agree. You said what you said! I would add that there is definitely a layer of respectability politics in the choice of words 'quiet luxury.' Maybe it's an age thing (I'm in my 40's) but I have always veered more towards classic pieces (not necessarily designer but quality) which I can rotate for years. I've had my fair share of so-called 'loud'/trendy stuff in the past 🤷🏾‍♀️ Fashion and style is such a wide spectrum and can vary for a person day to day. You can catch me in so many different looks and get confused so no poiint in trying to categorize me one way other other😂

Little do people realize that "old money" dress however they want...lots of old money people dress colorful and eecentric (look up 8th Marquess of Bath...old money aristocrat, led a very colorful eccentric life) because they don't care what others think. A lot of this 'old money' aesthetic is ridiculous and is just a regurgitated version of the "preppy" look. What 'quiet luxury' should be less about dress in head to toe beige and more about caring about quality materials and that doesn't always cost $5000 for a dress *coughTheRowcough*.

I would add 'classic' into the quiet luxury category. What is 'classic'? Western European. Asian, African, Middle Eastern are not in this category. The degree that study 'The Classics" are aimed specifically at Grecian, Roman, French and English art, literature and culture. Items/cultures that are Persian, Arabic, Chinese, Indian and Nubian are classics in that they are 'older styles that have stood the test of time', but don't ascribe to the last 500 years of Western Europe aesthetic. Try 'less adorned', 'simply tailored' or perhaps 'investment pieces' as substitutes.

Thank you for this video Ifeyinwa! You articulated this perfectly! Give it a few more years and "quiet luxury" won't be the indicator of affluence. When you mentioned that "quiet luxury" was rooted in racism, I was nodding my head emphatically. I agree! This is basically stating that one is inferior to the other which in my opinion is a spot on definition of what racism is. There is obviously a market for the "heavily logo-ed" pieces and of-course a market for the "minimalist" style. For me, it all boils down to, "to each his own". We all won't (and can't) like the same things.

Most of my wardrobe consists of classic pieces, I wouldn't call it quiet luxury. I can wear a sheath dress in a vivid color and still be classic. I do prefer natural fabrics, but do look for blends (linen/silk/flax), so care is minimal. Also, I buy most of my clothes off eBay, so I keep things affordable. I do buy a few trendy pieces that I cycle in and out for after hours looks. Personally, I hate the work classy, again it is elitist. One can have a refined sense of style regardless of their income, status, background etc.
While neutrals are good to have as a basis, I do get tired of all the beige this and that. Of course, once one knows what their color palette is, things get a lot easier.

I loved this video so much, and it’s so true what you said on how Quiet luxury is at the end the minimal look or preppy look with a new name. An awful new name as you mentioned.
In another video someone mentioned how trends are cyclical, a years ago it was all about the street style fashion, all very casual and cool. Jeans, hoodies and sneakers but looking nice due to a nice hair and make up. Those were the elements to not look sloppy or like I’m having a bad day.
And now it’s all about looking preppy and elegant again. Hehe I think this awfully called quiet grew on people getting tired of athleisure with the pandemic women are eager to dress up again and want to be as far as possible from jeans and Ts or jeans sweatshirts but in general casual clothes.
I don’t hate logos honestly I quite like them in accessories, in clothes the logos make me a bit dizzy but in accessories I do like logos. I love the LV Damier Eben bags especially the Alma bb and I still think Gucci Marmont belt looks really nice with jeans and a white Tshirt.
I’m a mix of both trends. My accessories I try them to be more classic so I can use them more often.
But yeah at the end this BS of the old money aesthetic with everyone trying to do the Ralph Lauren adds is just an excuse to try be dressy everyday.
I don’t mind girls who prefer to be always more dressy my friends style has always been that way, while I’m more casual.

Before even watching your video, I am really critical of this trend. It IMO implies that some money 'old money' is better/more worthy than new money and I think we need to challenge the inherent classism (and therefore racism) of notions of old money, which is naturally underpinned by institutions that try to gatekeep people on the basis of social class (and race). I personally don't aspire to be associated with such social exclusion.
Aesthetically speaking I love simplicity and minimal looks, however, I also love a monogram (such as LV canvas) and Chanel CCs. I've also noticed that some monograms are deemed better than others, in particular, influencers denouncing LV monograms as being too recognisable in favour of Goyard etc. I think there is a place for both.
Interestingly, this exact trend was around way back in 2008 after the financial crash, but I don't remember it having such classist undertones.

I wonder if there's a correlation between where we are financially as a society and these trends, because things are arguably the worst they've ever been right now, so how this is even trending now is beyond me.

This is really interesting to me. I have always dressed in what you kids now call 'quiet luxury' except when I was a punk but even then I still wear some of my things from back then. I always associated this with comfort and well made items that I could get years out of. It was the style of no style as far as I was concerned, never in or out. It was not about how expensive the item was, and maybe that's the difference with how I see 'quiet luxury' versus how it is being looked at now. I would never in a million years waste money on anything from the row. Their pricing is ludicrous. If you have that sort of money to burn, get something custom from a tailor. Bespoke is far more luxurious that some off the rack nonsense. Now I wish I was in bespoke territory but I'm not. There's plenty of wonderful makers at very good price points where you can get good looking, well made clothes. Like honestly what is wrong with that woman in that insert? Do these people really think other people are dressing to get over? Nonsense. People want to wear what they like and what makes them feel good. Who is that person to comment on whether or not you like logos or brights or whatever else they don't like? Who left her arbiter of taste? I certainly didn't elect her.
In my mind though "old money" doesn't mean the same as 'quiet luxury". I agree with you on the "old money" tag meaning specifically old prep/old english money look and that brings to mind a very specific shall we say, type, which is not inclusive at all and I'm with you on that not being cool.

I mean....using the words 'dangerous' and 'problematic' as it pertains to fashion is a hell of a stretch! Lol. We all know we live in a capitalist society and the very essence of our day-to-day activities are governed by out socio-economic status which is directly linked to which class we belong to. Why classism becomes an issue when it comes to innate objects like clothes and bags is beyond me. All I hear is ruffled feathers from people who feel that 'now that I can afford a little bit of this, I want to be a part of a little bit of that' and the reality is, there are levels to the game and we all know that. It just hurts to hear it.

@@Ifeyinwa No, I heard you just fine; the topic of conversation is really not complex. You opened up a discussion and we're discussing. The worst that can happen is we agree to disagree.
Why the use of the words 'problematic' or 'dangerous' is humorous to me is because 1. not having access to the luxury space is a problem I guarantee a lot of people would actually want to have (in this cost of living crisis) and 2. this is only 'problematic' (whether it's rooted in racism or classism, makes no difference...take your pick) to people who aspire to own or already own luxury goods...which makes this a very first world problem.
Secondly, when we spend our hard earned, saved up coin to buy a luxury pair or e.g. shoes, consciously or unconsciously, we are doing so because we believe that that pair of shoes is BETTER quality, BETTER craftsmanship, BETTER style, BETTER value for money, BETTER looking, MORE exclusive (therefore less people have it) and all of that put together, means that that way of dressing is BETTER! So back to what I said initially, this is why people get in their feelings when they are told, ''you still can't sit with us'.
