Lee consistently bloodied the Union's nose by fighting defensively, but at Gettysburg he violated his own doctrine and attacked a well defended position. It was the turning point of the war.

Founding father Patrick Henry proclaimed to the First Continental Congress in 1774, "The distinctions between Virginians, Pennsylvanians, New Yorkers, and New Englanders, are no more. I am not a Virginian, but an American."

Lee's loyalty to Virginia is also based on the reality that he would not be welcome there anymore if he fought for the Union.

Interesting that the map of “Virginia” which Lee called home does not include the portion of the state that would become West Virginia in 1863. At the start of the Civil War, the state Lee called home, included that territory.

If Lincoln was so opposed to secession, then why did he welcome the secessionist state of West Virginia to join the Union? You can't have it both ways Mr President.

History says that Lincoln “agonized” over the decision to allow West Virginia to succeed for the very reason you cite. There is a statue “Lincoln Walks at Midnight” in front of of our state capital of Lincoln dressed in his night clothes portraying the contradictory dilemma of his decision.

William Dean because West Virginia was willing to come back to the country as they were committed to being a part of the union and didn’t really care about slavery. Abraham Lincoln wanted the states to come back as he wanted to preserve the union however they knew that wasn’t going to happen so in West Virginia seceded from Virginia who succeeded from the union Lincoln was open arms to bring them back. As a new state.

      Dennis H
The decision was made that no new states would be chartered during the war. The Union wasn’t going to sanction additional possibilities for the Confederacy to grow.
But since counties in Northern Virginia did not agree with Virginia’s secession vote the section of Virginia was given separate statehood.
Rules change if the ones making the rules say so.

Who associates Abe with Washington? I surely don't. Washington fought for independence from Great Britain, Lee fought for independence for his home Virginia and the Confederacy. I would much rather compare Lincolns actions similar to king George the 3rd especially in regards to taxation and rights.

Boba Think of it as committing treason against the Yankees who had a very Hamiltonian vision of the United States the south thought that the Hamiltonian vision of the United States was going to be pushed upon them by the Yankees. The Yankees just the south thought were going to make Southerners slaves of free blacks they were going to enter Mary with free blacks and they were going to therefore be under black control and not only that they were going to be under the sovereignty of the national government of which they did not agree with they agreed with state sovereignty rather than national sovereignty because before the United States became known as the indivisible nation it is today it was seen as a confederation of sovereign states rather than an indivisible nation with the national sovereign government. The south did not believe in big government. Therefore it was the south that committed treason against the Yankees they did not want to be tied to the Yankees. And yes they were guilty of treason against the national government they agreed with state sovereignty. Yet Lincoln was willing to pardon The south to the full extent except Confederate leaders. I think Confederate leaders were meant to be stripped of their title. And speaking of which although slavery cause the war the fight over slavery was between the anti-slavery Republican Party in the proslavery Democratic Party. the rest of soldiers north and south fought over the issue of secession rather than slavery. I wish people would be willing to forgive the south and stop fighting against the south just because they have their monuments and flags and such. The monuments in flux may have been put up press black people ( at least that’s what people say ) and they may have been put up as symbols of the myth of the lost cause. What’s important is not only half black people have had their freedom but they have had for over 50 years there a full equal rights as American citizens that’s what’s important therefore they should put all that stuff behind them. Alot of Southerners look at them as reminders of how they fought because they were loyal to their home state. And how they saw their states as sovereign. Therefore it was not all about slavery just because slavery started it.

President Lincoln violated the first five of the Constitutonal Amendments in order to proceed with the war. No wonder a former "president", the African Muslim illegal alien from Kenya, Mohammed Obama ,who lied, cheated, and stole his way into an already corrupt presidency admired Lincoln so much and openly bragged about it. They were two of a kind except Lincoln was a native born
      American.

It seems that people don't understand the definition of the word, 'State'. That WAS your country, at that time. Don't believe it?
Explain why each one had their own military regiments. Why weren't they all titled as United States Army? By the same token, the Confederate's forces were constructed the same way. The Cross of St Andrew's flag, with the stars was the adopted battle flag for the Army of Northern Virginia. It wasn't the Confederate National flag. We are misguided through history by opinion, rather than actual facts of the times. The states created the federal union, not the other way around.

In 1900 - 1930 Robert was the most popular name for boys in America. Why not U. S. or Abraham ? U.S. Grant was known by his men as the butcher and Abraham threw many newspaper men and politicians into jail so he would not have the dissent. When you win it makes everything right.

It's too bad Lee couldn't follow the example of other fine Virginia military officers like William Terrill, George Thomas, his old commanding officer Winfield Scott, and his own cousin Samuel Lee. Those men loved Virginia as much as Robert did, but they still had the integrity to do the right thing and stay loyal to the Union. What a shame their stories are not as well known as his.
