  • Lance Reddick felt a little underprepared going into the play "Seven Guitars". He'll never let that happen again.

Terrible ordeal. I was fortunate enough to have a fantastic actor right next to me jump right in and say his lines during Romeo and Juliet. Fantastic Romeo he was. I was Friar, first time ever acting, second day of a 3-day run (small black box theater in community college).
    Couldn't get out 2 LINES:
"So smile the heavens upon this holy act. That after-hours with sorrow chide us not."
Only got out a "So smile!"
Romeo picks it up like I was cheering him up, and we just powered through the remainder of the scene. Still kick myself to this day.

This interview is amazing. I love Lance and empathize with forgetting lines on the spot. I describe it like I was hit in the face by a “psychic jellyfish”. Smack! Brain goes blank.

Same thing happened to me, it's like experiencing a transient ischemic attack (TIA). You brain just goes completely blank and the only thing you can do to rescue yourself is through one's well-practiced improv and adlib skills. Absolutely terrifying.

And the problem is made worse when it’s Shakespeare. There’s no ad-libbing to save you.

@@danyt1232 Exactly! In fact, here's a classic moment where David Tennant describes when it happened to him at the 4:30 mark (2 minutes).

I'm curious as to why a working professional actor chose to break the 4th wall and directly speak to the audience. That is the upper hand actors have over the audience. The audience does not know the lines or action of the show. The majority of the audience is seeing the show unfold for the first time. It is the actors job to figure it out in the moment, as if nothing went wrong, even if the actor does "go up on the lines". Also "going up" does not necessarily mean to forget lines, it actually means to jump over or skip lines in a monologue or dialogue.
