- Looking for how or when you should use Acetone or Mineral Spirits? In this video, I'll tell you about each product, how to use them, and when you'd want to use one versus the other.
Acetone: highly flammable, aggressive and fast-acting solvent for multiple purposes, volatile (evaporates quickly) without leaving residue, water soluble, dispose by bringing to a hazardous waste facility.
Mineral spirits: flammable, milder and slowly evaporating solvent, less stinky but more toxic, leaves an oily residue, best for thinning paints and stains, created by distilling petroleum so it is not water soluble, dispose by bringing to a hazardous waste facility.

Great video! Glad you touched on flammability, toxicity and disposal. Good examples of using the products. Keep up the good work!
Thank you for this great video. So many people irresponsibly dispose of hazardous waste. I hope your watchers follow your guidance.
Thanks. Well done. I've been wondering about the difference lately.
Hi Melissa! Thank you! excellent information. Happy Mother’s Day 😊
Great vid thanks for all the hints and tips thanks for making and posting 👍
Well researched and explained. Thanks!
Great explanation! Also great that you cover safety and safe disposal of these products. Thank you!
Good info. I get confused by these products as well. The spontaneous combustion is a good point worth remembering.
Nice info and Happy Mothers Day! Just wanted to add, I use Acetone often for my finishing work. Investing in chemical gloves and a chemical mask from the home box stores I can't stress enough, should be under $20 bucks. Breathing the vapors and getting any solvents on your hands is not good. Stay safe :)
Very informative video...I appreciate the knowledge you have about many different products...thanks
What I FANTASTICLY informative video! Thank you so much!!
Very informative and helpful, thank you
Good information. It hadn't occurred to me that I was smelling nail polish remover as I took the varnish off my wood project. Thanks!
Great informative video!
Very good video. Thanks!
Thank you for posting 🤝
very helpful, thanks.
Happy Mother"s Day. Have a great day. Great info.
Useful and nice presentation 👍
Very useful info .. Thanks
Hi thank u so much for your video! Question: If i want to remove an old oil stain from the wooden floor, which one should I choose? Thank u ahead for helping me!
If you lay it out to evaporate, place a piece of hardware cloth or screen over it so animals can't try to drink it, please.
That was helpful.
Thank you!
Thank you so much, you just saved me from a big potential mistake. I wanted to use acetone to remove super glue on my sofa
When painting metal a good cleaner is Brake Clean (Kleen) It's also a great hornet/wasp killer.
Thank you
Thanks Melissa! Just bought a can of acetone to try to degrease and clean the paint on my cars and then repaint them after. Can't thank you enough for me to get a primer before using and hopefully not misusing the acetone.

I used acetone in my wood stainer for a backyard fence and it seems that it made the finish darker? Am I wrong in thinking it did that, or is it because it came out more abundantly by virtue of its thinner form. That is, did I simple have more stain on the wood? Have you noticed it darkens finishes?
Also the big box stores need to sell a small bottle for small projects. The only container I saw was like a half gallon.
I use acetone to remove natural oils from woods like bloodwood before finishing with tung oil. The tung oil won't absorb effectively if the natural oils are left in the outer layers.
That's a great use!
What you recomend to clean a oil base paint to a sprayer tip?
If you use a towel in linseed oil and then you just toss that towel aside it can and often does catch fire all on its own because it generates heat
Can I use Acetone to clean off wax from a piece of furniture before I get ready to paint it? If yes, do I go directly to paint after the acetone has dried? Thanks
Hi I used mineral spirits on my dinning table after a paint stripper but it left awful smell. Can you suggest any product that might help to get rid of the odour?
We love your videos, Melissa, my wife has developed a girl crush!
Happy Mother's Day! I love how you get right into it, tell us the difference -- clearly and in simple language for us budding DIY'ers. Hope the weather in MN is warming up - it finally got warm here in CT. All the best.
Which one would be best to remove fabric backing from PVC?
I work at a textile coating factory. Mineral (or white) spirits is meant for harder solvent works while methyl ethyl ketone could be used more lightly. Spirits is irritant and needs to be used with gloves. Acetone not so much, but please clean your hands with soap and water afterwards.
So helpful to know. Just subscribed for more tips 😀@Motivated Mimi
When removing the adhesive used in caulking strips, an adhesive designed to resist polar solvents since water is a polar solvent, mineral spirits work far better. Gum or any type of gummy material dissolves when scrubbed with it.
Can I use acetone to dissolve standard wood stain and then stain pvc with the mix?
What is better to go through plastic, vinyl or nylon?
Wow. Truly pretty.
Never thought of using acetone for cleaning flux residue. Will give it a try. But I do know acetone affects plastics so I wonder if it would mess up some components having plastic components (not sure which type of plastics it would affect to be honest).
My main use for acetone is very specific. I use it to clean up contact adhesive residue seeping out from the edges after applying teak on melamine boards on my wood working projects. Oddly enough, from my understanding the teak I am using is mostly made of some type of PVC (comes in different thicknesses) but the acetone does not mess up the teak nor the melamine boards.
I have tried it on a different quality of blockboards too. I don't know the actual material its made from but the sellers over in my country call it "gelcoat" or "polyester" boards. I prefer to stay away from it unless a customer wants it (since it tends to be cheaper) because the surface gets easily dented/pressed-in.
use isopropyl at 99% it will clean up flux residue and evaporate entirely itself without effecting the mask or fiberglass pcb or plastics much of the components, acetone will remove any mask probably in seconds.. might be able remove chip markings with it..
Love your vids! Question-I wash my brushes after soaking them in mineral spirits and when I run the water through the brushes to wash them the absorbed mineral spirits ago down my drain. I don’t pour the container of Mineral spirits down the drain but whatever was left in the brush when I wash out the brush is going down the drain. Is that amount going to be dangerous? What would be a better resolution for this? Thank you in advance😊
Water doesn't actually get out mineral spirits, the same amount of mineral spirits will be residual in your brush if you rinse it or not. I'd advise you to use a towel to wipe off your brushes after soaking them in mineral spirits. Good luck!
My order of use is mineral spirits first, lacquer thinner next and as a last resort, acetone. Neither should be inhaled in a closed area as they are all serious health hazards. Because all three can be absorbed through the skin, it is advised to wear nitrile gloves. One can not be too careful with acetone, especially when caring a baby. HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY
Very useful video thanks. So would acetone be best for removing oil paint mistakes?
Yes
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog great, thank you.
Will these products clean latex paint off of concrete?
What is the solvent for varnish?
Queen
10/10
mineral spirits and thinner are same? Right?
i use mineral spirits in my pressure stoves as kerosene substitute. Its waaay cheaper and burns way cleaner.
👍
Good morning and happy Mother’s Day, from a loyal friend . Did I tell ya I hit 1k finally . Thanks fro all your help .
Congrats!
Do you have any ideas for removing motor oil from your garage floor?
I'd try a degreaser like dawn dish soap on it and then baking soda to absorb what's left in the concrete.
Wipe up what you can, then a heavy dose of liquid dishwasher soap with a little water. Then lots more water to wash it off.
I had no idea mineral spirits was toxic, they tell you to use mineral spirits for cooking surfaces like cutting boards and butcher blocks to clean and seal them. 😮 I know acetone is basically finger nail polish remover, I never would’ve guessed mineral spirits were more toxic. Is that dangerous or do you just need to let it evaporate and then it’s safe?
I can't answer for sure and a quick google search didn't tell me a straight answer either. My gut tells me not to use it on food surfaces, but it does fully evaporate. I think if you've been advised by a professional you trust then it might be okay?
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog I have no idea anymore, it seems like a lot of the things professionals have been advising us on we’re completely wrong. Lol. I just remember a long time ago in woodworking class that’s what we used to seal the boards and I’ve often been told that’s what you use to clean butcher blocks and wooden cutting boards. For some reason I always sort of thought of it as something non-toxic since people tell you to use it on food prep surfaces, but I guess people are wrong a lot. 😂 I don’t trust anybody anymore. Lol. I googled it too and I see a lot of places saying that’s what you use on it, it makes me wonder if they meant mineral oil instead of mineral spirits, I don’t know if there’s a difference but it’s kind of scary. Lol
@@ShaneZettelmier I think you're confusing mineral oil (food safe) with mineral spirits.
Hi,,,
Ok I can clean off the mineral spirits with acetone on rusted metal to get ready for paint
Sooo, where might turpentine (the kind from a tree) fit into this conversation?
Can mineral spirit be used to restore hard stiff brushes??
I'd say no. I have tried before, but like I said it doesn't break down dried on paint very quickly at all. I soak my brushes in acetone to get off hard dried paint, but you have to be very careful not to get the acetone into the top of the brush where there's glue that holds in the bristles. I don't let them soak more than 15-30 minutes because I don't want the brush to absorb the acetone up its bristles into the glued area either. This will make your brush fall apart.
@@WelcometotheWoodsBlog Thank you! I just got frustrated and threw the whole darn brush away lol I'll know the next time.
Waow....you are sooo beautiful....
Wo she is really cute!
Highlights, you trying to shake the prego off huh....lol
Lol! No, I get my hair done once every year for my birthday :)
One exciting side effect of inhaling Acetone vapors is permanent damage to your central nervous system
can't stand the smell of white spirit makes me really nauseous
acetone + transmission fluid together makes penetrating fluid for rusted bolts
