    Here in this video I demonstrate the correct procedures, and tools required to properly perform a valve adjustment on the 2004-2009 series Honda CRF250R dirt bike. In this video, our customer stated he had performance issues and his bike was hard to start. After performing a cylinder compression test, I was able to determine that compression was 0 P.S.I. After performing a leak down test, I was able to determine that the intake valves were leaking greater than 30%. I found out that the intake valves were being held open by about .002-.003" and that was enough to have enough compression leakage to have performance loss. I took a guess after measuring the valve shims that were installed, and was able to get all the intake and exhaust valves to the proper clearance the first time. Sometimes I don't always get the proper clearances the first time, and an additional valve adjustment is required in these particular situations, but my experience pulled through and I was able to restore loss power to my customers dirt bike for an affordable price all in the same day. Standard cylinder compression on these dirt bikes is 57 P.S.I @ 800 r.p.m. Due to the fact these engines are high compression, 12.2:1 compression ratio, cylinder and valve blow by should not exceed 3% or this is typically an indication of valve train or power train damage or wear. If you don't have the proper tools or feel confident performing these procedures, avoid doing a valve adjustment on your own, and use this video for educational purposes. And by the way, the bike ended up starting and running great once taken outside and the carburetor was slightly adjusted. She was doing wheelies!

    The full length video was very helpful. About how long did this all take?

    I just bought. 250X. This will be very helpful. I think it's a neat design by Honda only using a single camshaft.

      Tune it up brotha. Honda technology is superior for a reason. Enjoy your 250x.

    Hey I need help! My 09crf450 won't start unless I bump start it, and when I do bump start it soon as I put it in gear and release the clutch it bogs out an dies ... Could a bad stator be the cause?

    • @michalkimber4779
      @michalkimber4779 3 роки тому +1

      Thats a sign of bad compression, valves or piston

    • @coot114
      @coot114 3 роки тому

      Or somewhere in the carb gettin too much fuel when you give it gas doesn't have enough time to burn it bogs out n dies, not kicking over could also have clogged jet or broken needle jet

    I just got my valves shimmed from the shop got it back , Now when i kick it over it makes a backfire every so many kicks and wont start , Any idea?

      I would verify valve timing and clearances were set correctly. If it ran before and it doesnt now, then it's probably something they did, and if it didnt run and it still doesnt run, maybe it's something else...

    You did a hell of a great job with this video, thank you, my question is how do I go about figuring out which shim I need? I’m doing this very same thing but that’s the part I don’t understand, I am planning on sticking the shims in and going back together and checking it and repeating this until I get to the right specs because it’s the only way I know how 😂 thanks for any help, you’re video alone is a huge help

      @QuantumMotorWorks  11 місяців тому +1

      To figure out the correct shim, you need to measure your valve clearance first when the piston is at tdc, take apart the cams, measure the shims that were out of spec, do the math, install the correct shim, reassemble. The video should explain this in greater detail. Thank you for watching!

    I commented before I finished watching the video. Not sure if that last ship was quite in spec, but then again maybe you have the client a discount? I like the video overall and I’m not trying to be a hater. It would have been nice to see the bike start at the end. My opinion would be different if you showed that.

    Thanks for the very informative video that convinced me not to buy a honda 2021 CFR300L to avoid this pain in the ass, assuming the engine design hasn't likely changed. Figure $80 for a shim kit if you DIY, and a fortune if you must pay a Honda dealer's service department. Problem solved the Honda CFR300L rally ABS is marked off my list of potential dual sport motorcycles to buy. I'll likely buy a Suzuki DR650

      Honda uses a uni cam. It's a good design. Comparing a cfr300 to a drz650 is like apple's to oranges, but I'd definitely get the drz650, you wont be disappointed

      The cfr250l and cfr300l are completely different motors than the R motor shown in this video. The L motors are rock solid reliable and easy to start and much less maintenance. The R motors have a very aggressive design for competition and require more maintenance

      Lol the crf300l valve checks every 10,0000-16,000km lol. My crf250r every 10hrs and if I thrash it on road it doesn’t last 10hrs without backfiring. Only issue with 300L is suspension needs to be binned from day 1

      I think these are 7.48mm

    • @QuantumMotorWorks
      @QuantumMotorWorks  2 роки тому

      Or they could be 9.48mm. I cant recall. You can pull the shims out and measure their diameter

      You're looking for clearance first, If I'm reading your
      question right....
      Then what I would do is just figure out how bad the spec
      is , on your valves, use your calipers to find an appropriate shim.
      I would re-mark my shim supply to SAE, so much more logical and
      easy, the Japanese are getting back at us for using metric
      for this process. lol
