This episode concentrates on the Vikings and their inventive craftsmanship, the expansive Carolingians' art of exquisite finesse and richness and the skillful hardworking ingenious Anglo-Saxons. Januszczak shows the Viking skill in making ships and their attacks on Christian centres such as Lindisfarne not only to loot but to defend their own Norse gods.
He visits the Jelling stones that commemorated the Danes' conversion to Christianity. Charles Martel and the Franks belief they were God's chosen people after the defeat of Muslim forces later led to Charlemagne being declared Holy Roman Emperor by the Pope and the creation of the largest empire since the Romans.
Januszczak considers Charlemagne's Palatine Chapel, Aachen, as a brutal and cold attempt to copy the Muslim Mosque of Cordoba. Anglo-Saxon art is represented by the Sutton Hoo hoard. Januszczak concludes that in the Dark Ages it was not the sword but the written word, whether in wood, stone, or what he considers the greatest masterpiece of all art, the Lindisfarne Gospels, that defined the age.

I think I've learned more from Januszczak in two weeks of watching his documentaries than 4 years of Fine Arts. FANTASTIC!
sad aint it! I can say the same thing! I barely paid attention in college but if he was my art history professor Id would have been enthralled completely
says more about you and your dedication than your study.
@@demi3115 Exactly
Love this guy. I've always loved art but some of the deep dives into say the mysteries behind specific paintings and artists or dental records in a London England library clearly demonstrating the impact of sugar in our diet are so enlightening
I have watched some of his videos 2x over and still pick up the jewels.
Waldemar’s Perspective productions are like a combination of travelogue, sociology, psychology, geography, history, and art - all delivered in a style that is entertaining and accessible for the lay person. He gives the viewer the perspective of art history from both the forest and the trees, and as a result makes a strong case for his perspectives on art. It’s how every Art History 101 should be taught.
Agreed!
I adore him!!
Brilliant praise ....thanks
On the cross:
"This is a rather wonky specimen, which is why I like it so much. It's not quite right...so you just want to hug it."
:) I love his quirky humor.
Maybe it reminds him of his own wonky specimen lol
You are without doubt one of the best art historians of all time. Your teaching is in itself an artform. Thank you.
@Chucky Chrysal
Yes, he is outstanding!
We can all thank Professor Waldemar Januszczak for the best, most entertaining, and most informative videos on history, culture, and art, anywhere on the Internet! Thank you!
Waldemar is an absolute treasure as a presenter and spokesperson for all historical subjects. The B.B.C. really has a treasure in him. Don't let him get away!!! Lol
Too jewish
Carl, I could not agree more!

Skip to the end of the video and hit the replay button. Watch the video without ads
It's so annoying. I have to pull the red dot forward just beyond the evil yellow ad dots and then there aren't ads.

Well said
Yes, it is annoying but it is worth it. For me anyway. What is five seconds ?
That metal worker guy is incredible
I love watching this guy-thanks for helping me heal up from rib injury and keeping my brain entertained
I find the writing on ancient gravestones deeply touching and proof of the universality of human emotion…some are very funny, some not all complimentary, and some full of such profound loving grief and the terrible ache of an empty place in the those who outlived the deceased.
Waldemar's enthusiasm is delightful!
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.....................
Memory and projection into a future that might be if we do it right and get some lucky breaks. If the heavens open up. If we are bestowed with grace.
Remains my fave Waldemar documentary. Carving his name in runes...straightening his quiff hairstyle...iconic moments.
And the man is genuinely extremely interesting.
Waldemar's perspective is stellar, magnificent and splendid.
I'm thankful for you sir.
I am a Yank-Half Irish, plus Norwegian/German, out here in Wyoming. Thanks, again, Waldy-what a treat!❇️
You know it's a Waldemar doc if "Wonky" pops up somewhere......as I rewatch these brilliant films I've heard it used several times.
Wonky is Wonky World. :)
The Oseberg ship is amazing.
The many daily life and ceremonial artefacts excavated from the burial is of equally extraordinary high standard!
The museum is definitely worth visiting, if possible...
I’ve never known any of this … so glad I found this channel and Waldemar.
Love these documentaries..I’ve always loved medieval art…well, art, period, but especially this period and I’m mad for illuminated manuscripts.
SO GOOD TO SEE ALL THIS HISTORY and I didn't have to attend a class - or 3 or 4 - THANK YOU THIS ALL TAKES MY BREATH AWAY. so grateful. I struggled to get an education- finding I COULD ACTUALLY do art works, naturally - I could've been somebody like Mr. Greenhouse. wow. at 80 - I am enjoyng being shown beauty beyond compare.
The Sutton Hoo jewellery is astounding. Utterly beautiful and absolutely beyond compare. It always blows me away
Love this guy's work and his contagious enthusiasm. He KNOWS art, from A to Z.
So good people, why did you give up using DVDs? If you download and burn onto DVD hey presto no ads are downloaded with the content!! Then you can watch and enjoy!
Waldemar Januszczak, long time no see, I am now 100% more excited about this documentary!
Thank you for these programs explaining the Art of many ages.
Waldemar, you are Better than any Professor I ever had!!! Your teaching skills are amazing!!! I could watch you all day!!😍👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This man is like a fiery version of David Attenborough! I love it....
Break my heart, why don't you! Wonderful! Jeg laengter hjem til Danmark! Thank you Waldemar!
For all of us Art History lions, this is red meat! You can never get enough of this.

I just love valking around vith Waldemar. This is my new fave series!
Waldemar, you are SO interesting, you bring it all to life, thank you
"Words, letters, inscriptions, they keep appearing in this story, and wherever they appear, they seem to glow with Dark Age urgency." Glow with Dark Age urgency. Out of the darkness appears a glow. A light. A beauty. A wisdom. What an image! What a wordsmith. An artist of words. Waldemar Januszczak, your programme is a piece of art in itself. Thank you for enlightening us in such a delightful manner. This information just flows in without resistance like melted gold.
Man, you almost gave me a heart attack there 😨👉🏻14:51
when you whipped out your FOLDEKNIV in front of the rune stone! 😵
" The twilight begins to work it's magick," Indeed.
Love the metal working artist.
I gave up television because of all the commercials and I refuse to watch anything that has ads this often!!!
I used to spend holidays on Holy Island ..amazing little place
Your documentaries are without comparison.
Thank you so much.
Great presentation. The dark part of the age was/is more knowledge than art.
This channel is better than many with many more subscribers
A great documentary on art and religion!
THAT AMAZING SHIP IS SO BEAUTIFULLY-CRAFTED...it's like a seagoing poem by an Odin-spawned skald.
Stood next to the Oseberg Ship you feel a shiver down your spine.
The sheer size.
It exudes both power and grief simultaneously.
Being a burial vessel.
Thought to have been for a Viking Queen. 👑
This is such an incredible series to watch 🙂 I really learnt a lot
Absolutely the most informative documentaries on the net. I re-watched this one several times.
Aachen's cathedral is actually one of my favourites compared to other cathedrals. 💔
But it's really fascinating how sturdy cuttlefish bones are.
very good, informative, interesting documentary. i like vikings. and i LOVE US CELTS!
Love these presentations by Waldemar !
Curious why the term "illuminated manuscript" was never used? That's what I was taught in art history during my BFA. Wonderful Waldemar doc as always.
I am so happy to find this documentaryl. Thank you very much
Excellent video. I love the Perspective series. Brilliant and inspiring.
MAGNIFICENT!!!
Thank you 🙏❤️🙏
Just one of the best explainers.
Brilliant
I just think this was one of your best
What a magnificent ship!
I like the cloisonné king and the craftsman.
Love watching this incredible chap....he’s simply charming and addictive with his explanations, it’s like art is in his blood
Such an excellent piece. Thank you
Waldemar is my idol
So impresive we do so love you
I am amazed that the presenter is able to touch this unique book with his bare hands. No gloves. He is fortunate, indeed.
That book he's touching is very likely a faithful copy kept at the monastery for sentimental reasons, and not the real deal. The real deal is probably at the British Library, behind lock and key, where you have to handle it with white gloves.
Loving this. Learning a lot.
bloody marvelous.
Conventional history seems to be a long list of wars. How delightful to learn history from a beautiful and enlightened ....perspective!
Making a documentary about the Viking craftsmanship and the Saga without mentioning Iceland is like making a documentary about British pop music saga and not mentioning the Beatles
Well I guess we need another documentary, from, Waldemar!
Aidan and his monks were from Iona. Lindisfarne was a Dalriada Scots' foundation.
Just found your docs, well-done, captivating and intriguing, thank you
So original andv captivating with a very sly sense of humour .I just love this guy
The amount of commercials is insane on this channel
imagine not using ad block
Mr Lag I may. I usually don’t bc I want channels to get paid but I’m starting to reconsider
if you skip a commercial, then there will more commercial coming up and even the lenght of each commercial is growing up, the more often you skip. if you never skip in the first place, they are almost NO commercials.
Julie Worland Thanks, I didn’t know that 🙃
Julie Worland Long live the algorythm shit.
Very well done indeed...
Can u guys stop complaining about the ads and just appreciate the beautiful art and effort they put into this doc? Way better than the cap on TV now...unless you want more sjw bullshit??
Well, this was on tv first - it's a BBC production. All the complaining about the adds is annoying, though. I mean, adblock exists, anyway, and it's very flexible. Watching a couple of ads seems fair in return for good content, but if a youtube channel exploits the ad system and puts in too many (like this one), why should the audience bother watching ads from them at all?
October 2021 ... Still appreciate the docs being offered on UA-cam more than what is offered on commercial TV, sadly even PBS.
As for the ads, yes there are a lot of them. You can down load an ad-blocker (just remember that some of the individuals downloading these videos get paid a miniscule amount for the inclusion of the ad.).
Another fantastic episode. WJ, your writing is much to be envied.
There were Viking mercenaries soldiering as body guards in Constantinople, so what's that about "staying in the harsh north" and all.
Thankyou. How marvellous, how fascinating!
I love it all.
I love that frank cathedral.
I think I have seen all Waldemar's videos once or twice. I hope to discover new ones!
Way to GO --- the Osterberg ship is ..Stunning .....my jaw dropped for half an hour.
I’ve been watching this for about an hour now, however I’m fairly sure I’ve only seen 10 minutes worth of this documentary the other 50 minutes were ads....no point in watching any further, it’s going to take 3 solid days to finish this documentary
The art of the adds, a full documentary with some historical backgrounds on other minor documentaries.
Anyone knows the name of the host. He is great. I wanna know more about him.
Waldemar Januszczak
Great one.
Living in the NW we're surrounded with Vikings!
I really enjoy his documentaries!! I usually don’t care much for European history but he makes it fun and has a wide variety of subjects and I love art… Him and Dr Limpscom make me want to take a course😂👍🏼Keep it coming man I’ll watch … Hello from USA 🇺🇸
Viking artifacts have been found in Texas, Minnesota, and perhaps in Grand Canyon, though I'm not sure of the last.
love the contents But Perspective come on ! ADDs every 3min ????WTF !!
Add ≠ ad
I hate ads, and youtube is peppered with them. So, I decided to get premium. And its cheap and ad free, plus the fact that you get the music function, which is just like Spotify. For the price of Spotify, I get two things. Just telling you, I think its worth it. I pay 9.99 per month and there is never an ad.

Your documentaries are simply fantastic! Always so well expressed and may I say, with a flare of energetic enthusiasm. Thank you
Totally brilliant!!!!
beautiful...thank you
At 23:49. Yes, I've seen finer jewelry than what the Anglo-Saxons achieved. They're jewels from T'ang China. Just go to museums with T'ang Chinese bling and you will be amazed. Just as impressive as any Anglo-Saxon jewel--extremely intricate, exquisite, with the finest, tiniest details you will ever see in gold, silver and precious stones. T'ang Chinese jewelry was also made at roughly the same time as Anglo-Saxon jewelry, between 600 AD and 800 AD. You will be mighty impressed.
Well done. Knowing how Viking I am through genetic research gives me a better appreciation for the intricacy of the art.
Viking is not a DNA thing. Viking is an activity. Danes, Norwegians, and Swedes are the majority of people who went viking.
I have seen that garnets are found on the beaches of Scotland. What is the source of the garnets in the wonderful Viking hoards?
Ok, there is very little Viking/pagan artefacts in this documentary; its mostly Anglo-Saxon and Christian
I’m a big fan of Waldemar but the leaving out of Irish and Pictish art in any true detail was disappointing. I can understand the focus on Saxon art, for its out standing quality, but we Irish came a cross as lesser folk.
This is a documentary on Viking art, not Irish or Pictish art. It is not that hard to figure out. Look at the title.
Calling them "barbarians", is an insult.
"Vikings" or norsemen, had the biggest trading markets in the world during that time.
There's even archeological evidence that Europes biggest market city existed in southern Sweden...
They weren't all farmers and raiders. And they didn't live like cavemen at all. They just didn't build christian temples.
23:44 Those are all cut and fitted garnets??? Not fused glass enamel? That is absolutely spectacular! The work involved, my word...
Where Waldemar goes I go.
Interesting, thank you.
thanks for posting.
Thanks!
Magganificent !

To this UA-cam Channel: I really appreciate the content you host here, but there's a reasonable number of ads you can put on a video (2-3 is really the maximum I'll tolerate anyway). If you put in too many, people will lose patience and do one of 2 things: go elsewhere, or use adblock.
Once a channel has used too many adds on a video, I block ads for all videos on that channel. Apps these days make this very easy to do and I doubt I'm the only one with such a system.
