      Why not just buy a replacement part on Ebay? Did that for my old HP Pavilion dv6000 -- with tax less than $10. And, I don't need a microscope to repair the plug.

    Jesus - unless you have actually seen one of these connectors yourself you cannot understand from this video just how insanely difficult doing this is. Everything looks huge on videos through microscopes. The connector is only 1.5mm outer diameter and the micro-coax is insanely thin. Louis - your guys are incredible! Not surprised this was just a one off.

    I appreciate your video, it helped me repair my MacBook. I used a piece of packing tape with the sticky side up and attached to the surface with 2 additional pieces of tape. This method held the wifi connector in place while I opened and inserted the cable. it also made it easy to crimp the tongs back down onto the connector. the sticky surface will also help if your connector comes lose while manipulation the wire into the connector. holding the connector at a fixed focal point, makes working under the microscope a more comfortable experience. thanks

  • @LargeAlbatross

    I'd just like to add, when I was faced with this repair, I bought about 10 of the little buggers, and the final way i figured out how to do it, and it was very easy to do the second one, was to put down a bit of double sided foam tape and put the connector innards up on to the tape and then use a dental pick to open the latch and the little hands of the strain relief. then you can poke the bare wire into the latch and stick the wire down to the tape so it doesn't pull away, and you are free to push down the latch and do up the strain relief. I usually do those on most connectors by folding both side in and pressing down in the middle so it makes an "m" shape and then a squeeze on the sides.

    A little trick I use, some double sided tape aa tape to workbench so doesn't move around. Makes it a tad easier reshaping, naturally can't do other side unless flip & retape, but get the idea. AND yeah, a pain is butt to do these & have lost tons of connectors from flying across the room😄
    Cheers, A

    Magnet holds it down and stops it from flying away. I still haven't found a simple way to open them up except to mess around like you did. I took a file to the end of a fine pair of pliers and carved a triangle groove in each side with a file for re-clamping the tabs. It works well. This happens a lot on drones. It's like they use an inferior method to attach them.

  • @taylorstruna9839
    @taylorstruna9839 6 років тому

    I tried and miserably failed... Ended up applying to much pressure around the connector with tweezers and crushed the circle into an oval.... No more connection.
    I opted to cut the cable down on the area where it is screwed into the hinge and then snipped the cables in the same place off a cracked display, then soldered them together, making new cables with working connections. Much less of a head ache. :)
    But props to you for being able to pull this off!

    Inspired by this video, I successfully repaired a damaged WIFI connector from an expensive recent DELL laptop under 5 minutes with just a pin head.
    steps:
    1) open up the holders of the connector head from the cable using a pin
    2) pull the cable out of the connector
    3) do the same thing if you have a spare connector from a unused antenna cable (outdated laptop or broken screen, etc)
    4) use your hand to push the cable tip into the working connector head
    5) use your finger/finger nail to close the opened holder metals.
    Some people comment on why not just buy a cable, well for a recent DELL laptop, there is no part available, sometimes DELL doesn't have it.

    Yeah, I've tried to do that before too. Try doing it without a microscope. Then try doing it after having cataract surgery. I just wiped the stupid connector off the board and terminated to it directly. It works.

    How do you SPLICE this kind of wire? Am I right that its basically micro-mini coaxial cable, so the inner copper has to be electrically isolated from the outer aluminum (?) silver colored shielding? My three wires running from my Macbook pro base to the display were severed. A new display is almost $400. Would love to splice these three wires again and save the moolah.

    I need this done!! Just replaced the screen assembly on a MacBook Air, all smooth and easy til the very end, when attaching the 2 WiFi antenna cables back to the card, that little gold connector on one of them popped off from the wire. Now what!? Don’t know if I am capable of doing what was done in this video, but it’s exactly what I need to be able to reconnect the WiFi antenna wire to the WiFi card. I finally have a nice, new, working screen and new life in my MacBook, except that now one of the WiFi antenna wires inside isn’t connected... Grrrrrrrrr.......

  • @Hemanth71279
    @Hemanth71279 6 років тому +1

    Hi Louis, my name is Hemanth. I'm from Hyderabad, India. Of late, I've been watching a lot of your training (and Apple-Bashing!) videos and I like most (must admit all) of them! Well, coming to my problem. I had WiFi connectivity issue with my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 GT-N7100. I tried a workaround - to overlay a thin wafer of eraser on top of the WiFi chip so that it sits tightly against the PCB. I know this isn't a decent approach but it never failed thereafter, in that, my phone always lists the WiFi devices, which it wouldn't earlier. So, I'm quite Okay with it since I lack the finesse of the craft of micro-soldering. Alongside this "workaround", I was also trying to fix the antenna, where it was oxidized so badly that it wouldn't pick signal if I move away from the WiFi router. So, I started tweaking around with the Antenna Pin (the spring like pin - the ones made by Harwin, I suppose); this pin comes in contact with the WiFi antenna. In the process, the pin got broken. So, I de-soldered its remaining piece from the PCB and attempted to solder back a similar Harwin Pin in its place several times but with no luck. It got to a point where I lost the entire pad ( I doubt If there was any Or maybe two tiny little "solder blobs" to rest on, Or I may have damaged it by applying the soldering Iron too many times! Don't actually recollect.). Again, as a workaround, I placed a small solder blob (somehow it managed to "stick" to the board) in place of the Harwin pin so that it presses snugly against the WiFi antenna . Now, I also get a decent signal. But I'm not happy with this work because the solder blob a little larger ( a millimeter or 2) causing the back panel from closing properly. My query to you is - Will it be okay to scrape the board in order to solder the antenna pin? I don't know if there's a conducting material beneath that substrate. I thank you for taking your time to read this rather long NOT-STRAIGHT-TO-THE-POINT query!

  • @TetraSky

    Could this be done by just soldering a spliced cable that already has the connector on it, to the old broken cable and cover it up with heatshrink sleeve? Or would that affect the signal?

    • @_PatrickO
      @_PatrickO 6 років тому

      I doubt you can solder a coax that small. It is a center lead, insulator, and then outer conductive sheath. Basically a wire inside a wire. You normally use crimp connectors. As far as I can tell, no inline splice crimp exists for 1.13mm coax cable. Just end connectors. The only real option is to install a new connector because there is no way to join the existing cable to a cable with a connector on it that will fit inside a laptop.
