They are not soldiers but policemen of the Imperial Guard Headquarters (皇宮警察本部), a special national police of Japan.
#Japan #Tokyo
Typical of the Japanese.
Smart, efficient, speedy, highly precise, and no-nonsense, no-bullshit. Very well done.
I couldn't have put it better meself.
Coldstream guards: with trumpets blaring in symphony with the beating of the drum........MAKE WAY FOR THE QUEEN'S GUARD!!!!!
Now let’s talk about the tea ceremony..
The stone masonry of the wall is stunning, the way the large irregular stones merge with the huge rectangular stones is amazing. There doesn't appear to be any mortar used either!
The Japanese has perfected the fine art of mixing in the new with the old. It amazes me the contrast of the modern skyline with the traditional architecture of Japan.
I have seen the film "Emperor" about a US general went to see the emperor just a few weeks after Japan's surrender on order of Gen Mc Arthur. The Emperor's guards which had been allowed to use their guns stopped him and his men from entering the palace. He asked the officer he wanted to see him. Then the officer went to phone then he said yes but as soon as he and his men about to enter, the officer stopped them and pointed to him "Only you!" He went alone with the officer into the palace leaving his men outside.
It was only the Lord chamberlain, not the emperor the American general saw inside the palace. It was finally arranged for the Emperor to visit Mc Arthur for talks which could change Japan's constitutions.
Good film this.
Japanese people are really very well behave people. I wish their emperor live long.
I hope one day to have the privilege of seeing this in person. Much respect to our Japanese friends.
I love the giant gate. It's as if they're really worried about a Kaiju attack.
Simple, sensible, practical.
Very Japanese. Very dignified.
Very smart.
Thank you from Japan.
I like it. It shows the utility and functionality of Japanese Culture. No need for fancy showmanship or symbolic protocol. Just get in and get out.
exactly
That timing is very impressive, especially when they can't see what's going on behind them.
Most guards carry automatic rifles or semiautomatic, but I'd say the imperial guards of Japan are the only ones who carry just a handgun. Along with the sergeant that's at the tomb of the unknown soldier in Arlington
They rebuilt just the right amount of old buildings and yes, it's amazing and works very well
Neat, simple and discreet. I like it.
The reason why they don't have rifle means what they are not soldier. They are police officer.
Unlike the British monarchy, they had like Grenadier, Coldstream, Irish, Welsh and Scottish guard who also serve in combat but they working with the PD during Palace guard duty.

Look up videos of the British royal guard or the guards at the tomb of the unknown solider in america. It’s really impressive.
That is an excellent backdrop!
Japan is so beautiful!
It would be cooler if they include some traditional symbol of honour in their uniform, such as a piece of samurai armour.
That was so well done. Does Japan have a tomb of the unknown soldier they guard and change the guard? I'd like to see that.
would've been more symmetrical if there's two doors on both sides that each guard goes in
Nice video of the changing of the guard

Nice and simple, I can respect that, though uniforms could be touched up

Absolutely perfect!
I kinda expected them to have katanas, much like the Vactican guard using halberds. Oh well, the least they could've done though would be to have ceremonial swords.
I am really surprised to note that there is no pomp and show in the ceremony for a country known for all the glamour and style
God Bless. Tradition is what they are sharing
Thanks

After most of the emperors were overthrown in the past, Japanese monarch is last one in the world with a title "Emperor".
Last remaining monarchs are only Kings, Queen, Princes, even a Grand Duke and a Pope (a elected monarch according to history).
Simple and efficient, but I do notice... I am sorry if I am mistaken, but the guards seem to lack a bit of military discipline based on how they move. Are the guards part of the Japanese military, or are they paramilitary?
They should consider slightly shorter pants, all those folds due to the overlength looks really unprofessional.
***** Doesn't look like the clothes fit the men very well.
Maybe its so then, in a combat situation they can rip a piece of fabric off their pants if they really needed to....that or they had a really bad outfitter or they're trying to come across as more....casual? Because if you consider the way they changed the guard, it was far from flashy
EggiTheShadow They're guards, they're not really expected to get into a combat situation, they're mostly ceremonial (I mean if they're like most other nations guards they probably are military but they're not in combat positions at the moment)
***** Yeah, im aware of that, although they are royal guards, they should be able to protect the castle at a moments notice, if they were purely ceremonial what's the point of having them there in the first place
EggiTheShadow Same reason the guards in Moscow guard the tomb of the nameless soldiers as do the guards in the United States, tradition.
There were no real threat to Imperial Family in Japan, people of Japan honour their Emperor so much that there is no need armed guards to protect him and his family, if you read Japanese history, the Imperial Guards ceased to be effective armed soldiers and become more customary gurds since Heian era, and that was more than 1000 years ago, even in turbulence era like Sengoku jidai or civil war era in 1500 doesn`t shake imperial palace peacefull life
So true. Compare to China. So many dynasties. Japan only one dynasty

Unlike the national guards of some countries, these actually look and march like guards.
How long they have to stand to guard before their shift over?
I would love to visit Tokyo! ❤️
that guy who takes over on the left side, isn't he a little short to be a storm trooper?

Very clean.
But I was expecting much higher guard.
There is no exaggeration. I like it
Samurai were abolished in 1868 by the Meiji Restoration.
I was very impressed too
Kanji and Chinese characters are actually very similar. I can understand the confusion.
The Japanese have perfected EVERYTHING pretty much lol
Smart, but I think the Brigade of Guards at Buckingham Palace do a more spectacular job!
muscles guy
Simple but effective.
Thanks.
Quick and to the point.
finally an efficient guard change with no unnecessary crap lol

It is U.F.O
that one guard to the left needs a few ajustments
Professional without looking completely ridiculous.
Like the Brits😂

They should dress them up in traditional military garb, like the Kings Guard, and have them use modern firearms, only instead of red coats it’s samurai armour
Are they not armed???
Very clean and efficient guard change.

Yes. The older one is in Kyoto

No pomp, no circumstance. Nice.
Why isn't they're military the honour guard for the emperor?
Too militaristic after 1945.
They don't sit down? 0:35 do you see that? Standing guards.
haha I enjoyed this :) I felt like I was watching little toy army soldiers switch post in the motion and technique they used, very interesting indeed compared to the way the Russian Kremlin guards change.

So this isn't suppose to be a show? If so, they might as well walk up to them and say, "Hey Tanaka, it's quitting time! High five!"
No, they're not supposed to be entertaining, they're guards and all they have to do is protect the castle
It was not moated, low the rampart, and there were not facilities for the defense in the inside when Imperial Palace was in Kyoto .
The Imperial family is reigning over all the people by trust and influence of the virtue.
