When camping about 15years ago, I was sitting at the edge of a loch, I spotted movement on the ground, on closer look it was a dragon fly that had crashed and gotten sand on its wings and also had a folded wing. Realizing that it could not fly, I picked up the dragon fly and admired its beauty, I then spent the next half hour or so gently removing the sand from its wings and unfolding the the stuck wing. After about 5mins or so after having the sand removed it began to clean its wings further. A few mins later it began to pulse its wings and with what seemed like a burst of energy waiting to explode. It took off and zipped around me a few time before zipping away to eat all those dame Scottish midge's. I cant under state how much I appreciate the Dragon Fly. Well done on the video an amazing look into the biology and behavior of this amazing creature.
Great video with nothing missing from the Dragonflies stunning ability in hunting and flying. The Natural History Museum in London should have this on a continuous loop to show off their Dragonflies.
In Belgium the overpopulation almost killed the butterflies in 50 years, but around 2010 they all collapsed in a few years, some very common species are now impossible to find, when I say "common" I mean you could just watch at the window and see a few of them instantly, and possibly find a hundred in a hour. I suspect a new pesticide and I'm surprise no one is talking about it. The dragonflies are still there as we have ponds around cities, recently they planted many plants for the butterflies but it doesn't change anything for the moment. These common butterflies need nettles to reproduce, there are nettles everywhere, this plants is unkillable, but no more caterpillars on them. I suspect there is a limit for these insects, when the population is too low they are just getting spawn-kill. I also noticed cities think it's a good idea to put flowers near the roads, especially in the middle of roundabouts, I suspect this is a bad idea as it traps the butterflies inside while the cars crush them all day. If it was climatic changes new species should appears from south, but no, butterflies are now very rare. I suppose they still evolve with this strong natural selection but there is possibly a limit with that, they must be very visible to reproduce if they aren't a lot and able to find a plant to put their eggs, these conditions seems too difficult today. I also noticed that there are machines that cut the tall grass at the side of the road in an industrial way, these machines are so fast that the insects do not have time to escape it. I also think they removed the hedges in the giant fields to increase production, so any bug crossing it must travel a long distance with nothing to hide, as the remaining trees are near the roads because the roads are part of the state, farmers can't remove them, the problem is most remaining bugs hide in them and also get crushed by cars. Now that the hedges are removed we even have mudslides... that's getting crazy. Recently they built a complex of new houses in an abandonned field, why abandonned ? Because every few years this space is flooded since decades, we all know that. It was a cool place for butterflies for sure. So in a few years I'm totally sure these house will be flooded... It's 2024 and they still make these mistakes.
If the collapse is in one specific species of butterfly, the host plant is still very common, and the weather hasn't move to out of its natural boundaries, I would guess the most likely cause is a new disease or parasite.
After watching this, I'm left with a profound appreciation for these incredible insects, who's extraordinary abilities not only make them successful in their ecological niche, but also remind me of the intricate balance of nature.
Absolutely mesmerizing explanation as well the Dragonfly Fact. It leaves me speech less . I totally was unaware about the fact that the Lymph spend their hole life beneath the water and hunting like fearsome dragons ... Ohh Thank You ! I would glad to have a channel like this that brings Mother Nature Karisma .

Bit of dragonfly trivia: They can't walk. After reaching their adult (flying) stage, their legs are adapted to hold only. They can't "step" along or walk.
Excellent documentary with fantastic visual production. Thoroughly enjoyed watching it, and time just seemed to fly by. Looking forward to seeing what else you have in your library. I've subscribed too, thanks...
Godness me! one of the best videos I've seen so far in this channel! What a nature masterpiece the dragonfly is. Isn't it?..... This channel should have way more subscribers than these.
Beautiful animation but you have a glaring error around the 40 second mark. Damselflies do not alight with their wings in a horizontal position. Their vertical wings are the quickest visual check to tell the difference between Damselflies and Dragonflies.
My cat sometimes hunts these beautiful creatures 😅. I found a beautiful specimen arriving at its untimely demise in the paws of my capable hunting furry friend
One distinction between dragonflies and damselflies is when they are perched dragonflies hold their wings in an open position, whilst damselflies wings are closed. This is the quickest way to differentiate between the two. In your video both had their wings open. 🙂🇳🇱
Super instructive, and almost perfect! Lions don't live in jungles at all, and black widows are not insects (contrary to what the narration suggests). Other than that, it's technically perfectly done, and more beautiful than ever ❤ Maybe you should have explained that damselflies fold their wings when they land, this is how you can easily spot which is which. It's not visible in the video.
Hey Poney :-) nice to see you! Oh.. with the spider and the insects, you are right. The phrase "king of the jungle" as applied to lions likely originated from a mistranslation of the Hindi word "जंगल" (jangal), which refers to uncultivated land or wilderness rather than dense forest, and was popularized through cultural depictions despite lions not actually living in jungles. So I took it as a common quote and didn't think any further about it ;-)
I live in Newark, NJ. I am about 6 miles west of the annual dragonfly migration rout. I do, fortunately, get some visitors. t keeps me in touch with the seasons. Climate change may slightly shift the rout to the west. I also (foolishly) hope that I will eventually get alligators in the Passaic and Hackensack rivers.
That is not why the Ocelli exist they were originally thought to be a way to detect predator's from above and signal that the dragon fly needs to stop hunting and fly away.
"The body of a dragonfly is a masterpiece of aerodynamic engineering". Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to create solve problems or create things that didn't previously exist. This requires a mind and purposeful direction. As a design engineer I quickly learned to appreciate how hard it is to create something new that will actually function - things FAR simpler than a dragonfly or any living creature. "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse" (Romans 1:20). This is true now more than ever as modern research is revealing the incredible complexity behind every created thing.
O people, an example is presented, so listen to it. Indeed, those you invoke besides Allah will never create [as much as] a fly, even if they gathered together for that purpose. And if the fly should steal away from them a [tiny] thing, they could not recover it from him. Weak are the pursuer and pursued. Quran -Surat Alhaj Verse 73
@@luv2stack😂 had some similar thought. Indeed the original comment lacks respect to the video maker and even to science itself, telling us how evolution works. These mutations are really impressive and the author worked it out in a great way. It's ignorant to say "ah, yes, another creation of god".

Selfcaware dragon fly plays tomb raider.
Now do the migrants....
Show how they aren't a net positive and actually change cultures....

Dont sleep on Wild Dogs' success rate
7:00 Okay I understand how bugs are the prey for dragonflies but why is the greatest threat represented by a masked supervillain?
Why not? 😉
Seems like an overkill for chasing slow moving mosquitoes
0:59 Wow, if they existed today, they could harm a human being or even take a child!
they are the coolest of bugs

Dragonflies mate while in flight. Wouldn’t that be great?

95%? I can see why they got nerf'd in size.
Most lions live on the Savana not the jungle.😁
