When camping about 15years ago, I was sitting at the edge of a loch, I spotted movement on the ground, on closer look it was a dragon fly that had crashed and gotten sand on its wings and also had a folded wing. Realizing that it could not fly, I picked up the dragon fly and admired its beauty, I then spent the next half hour or so gently removing the sand from its wings and unfolding the the stuck wing. After about 5mins or so after having the sand removed it began to clean its wings further. A few mins later it began to pulse its wings and with what seemed like a burst of energy waiting to explode. It took off and zipped around me a few time before zipping away to eat all those dame Scottish midge's. I cant under state how much I appreciate the Dragon Fly. Well done on the video an amazing look into the biology and behavior of this amazing creature.

I live on a 2 acre clearing in a small (20 acre) woods. Most of the year it is wet, with pools and runoff towards the river, one mile distant. In the summer dozens of dragonflies patrol my property during the day, while bats do the same at dusk. I have never used insecticides or herbicides on my property and the natural grass is dense, green, and weed free! Even in the wettest summer, it is extremely rare to encounter a mosquito and we sit outside all summer with hardly a bite. Whenever I see the dragonflies and bats I greet them and thank both them and God for His amazing natural engineering!

The ecosystem is pretty Amazing! I was thinking while watching this video that it would be a good idea to put those in a pond if you had one. Or maybe the watering whole for Cows.
I also thought it would be a good idea to use their eyes as a design for a digital camera, either for still shots or maybe even motion lenses. It wouldn't have to be sectioned. Just that many little optics for picking up light and sending the information to a centralized visual program or chip with a program.

bless you and your land. stay blessed.
From Cochin, Kerala; 35 years ago - in my childhood - it was the same. there was no "barrier" - inside the house / outside - ppl only had to fear visible threats. Dogs or bigger (humans). Now, with CCTV and street lights - those are gone. Yet, i find myself - and the neighborhood - locked at home - with net guard windows. Natural water bodies needed for the dragon flies are scarce, and mosquitoes, are an invisible menace!
Now people buy poison incense sticks, sprays etc. if they want to have coffee/tea in their gardens. In the past they had natural surgical strikers... now - poison the ecosystem en masse!
Younger generation needs to know and feel the difference these wonderful insects can make. Don't know much about bat patrols at night - but i'll take your word.
      peace!

when I'm cleaning our outdoor ponds, there are often dragonfly nymphs in the mud and plant matter, and I consciously watch for their wriggling; an amazing thing is their ability to climb to the surface of the pile of mud and plant matter, and, on reaching the surface, they seem to unerringly head "downhill" toward the water... just amazing to see an apparently-simple insect larva, perform so intricately!
BTW, one thing missed in the nymph discussion was their "rocket propulsion"; instead of only swimming or crawling after prey, they have the ability to jet away, water-jetting many body-lengths in a second! Truely master predators, in all phases of their life-cycle!

There were dozen types of dragonflies dwelling along the stream laying eggs in water, mating in the sky while flying. As a child I was fascinated by their anti gravity maneuvers, from max speed to zero speed, the can relain stationary in the air then dazz left or right. They are very agile very difficult to catch. Their favorite plays are flying termites.

But apart from that, the animation is completely built in 3D from me.

I experienced a dragonfly resurrection of sorts. While bicycling in France, I passed by a large df which was upside-down on the road. It wasn't moving but was perfectly intact. I guessed that it had been wafted bottoms-up by a car. I picked it up to admire, holding it in my hand upside down for a while. Then, its legs started to move - maybe because it had gotten cold lying there, and the warmth brought it awake. After a minute or two, I turned it over, and it started to vibrate its flight muscles - and thirty seconds later, it was off! Magic.

In Belgium the overpopulation almost killed the butterflies in 50 years, but around 2010 they all collapsed in a few years, some very common species are now impossible to find, when I say "common" I mean you could just watch at the window and see a few of them instantly, and possibly find a hundred in a hour. I suspect a new pesticide and I'm surprise no one is talking about it. The dragonflies are still there as we have ponds around cities, recently they planted many plants for the butterflies but it doesn't change anything for the moment. These common butterflies need nettles to reproduce, there are nettles everywhere, this plants is unkillable, but no more caterpillars on them. I suspect there is a limit for these insects, when the population is too low they are just getting spawn-kill. I also noticed cities think it's a good idea to put flowers near the roads, especially in the middle of roundabouts, I suspect this is a bad idea as it traps the butterflies inside while the cars crush them all day. If it was climatic changes new species should appears from south, but no, butterflies are now very rare. I suppose they still evolve with this strong natural selection but there is possibly a limit with that, they must be very visible to reproduce if they aren't a lot and able to find a plant to put their eggs, these conditions seems too difficult today. I also noticed that there are machines that cut the tall grass at the side of the road in an industrial way, these machines are so fast that the insects do not have time to escape it. I also think they removed the hedges in the giant fields to increase production, so any bug crossing it must travel a long distance with nothing to hide, as the remaining trees are near the roads because the roads are part of the state, farmers can't remove them, the problem is most remaining bugs hide in them and also get crushed by cars. Now that the hedges are removed we even have mudslides... that's getting crazy. Recently they built a complex of new houses in an abandonned field, why abandonned ? Because every few years this space is flooded since decades, we all know that. It was a cool place for butterflies for sure. So in a few years I'm totally sure these house will be flooded... It's 2024 and they still make these mistakes.

"The body of a dragonfly is a masterpiece of aerodynamic engineering". Engineering is the application of science and mathematics to create solve problems or create things that didn't previously exist. This requires a mind and purposeful direction. As a design engineer I quickly learned to appreciate how hard it is to create something new that will actually function - things FAR simpler than a dragonfly or any living creature. "For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse" (Romans 1:20). This is true now more than ever as modern research is revealing the incredible complexity behind every created thing.

To know they are able to predict the movements of their prey is interesting, and yet some say super powers don’t exist 😅😂.

Thanks for this amazing explanatory video of dragon fly anatomy.
I am a lover of nature. Since my childhood, Dragonfly is one of those creatures that fascinate me. I would refer to them as mini helicopters. I even make caricatures drawing cartoons with dragonfly as the actor .

    I've long admired dragon flies.
    Their iridescent colours are beautiful.
I rescued one from my pond that realised it couldn't swim!
After 5-10mins to dry out on a nearby branch, it took off to continue chasing bugs.

I am so thrilled to see this film - just the other day i was in my car driving extremely slow in my RV park when all of a sudden i saw a dragonfly fly up to with about 2 feet in front of my windshield at about 2 feet above the hood of my car❤. What i found fascinating about him was he maintained his position there as i continued to drive - he shifted his position minutely left, right, up and down, seemingly looking right at me! It was the coolest thing 😊. He only briefly stayed with me but long enough to amaze me. No, it's not the first time I've observed a dragonfly before but surely not an experience like that and not with viewing such a nice interesting video of the dragonfly afterwards😊, so this is s gift, too! 😊😊😊😊

I often wonder if that is where the inventor(s) of the helicopter got their idea from, or if not the whole idea, the idea for their shape.
