So I keep hearing this phrase BTM in Hummer videos. I get it stands for brake throttle method. This is something that works very well in the H1 with torsion sensing diffs. I don't get how it works on open diffs? No need for BTM with lockers. Explain, please.
Great question! So BTM in general is definitely a common technique used on the H1, but less so on the H3. This is actually a debated topic amongst H3 owners if it is an effective method. I can say that this method is less effective on an H3 in compared to an H1. With earlier models of the H1, they came standard with torsen differentials which is kind of like an aggressive Limited Slip Diff instead of locking diffs. It wasn’t until later in the H1 model years did AM General offer factory lockers for the H1. Therefore using the BTM method was critical for a lot of H1 owners to keep traction to all 4 wheels so your wheels with the least traction wouldn’t spin fast. All Hummer H3 model years however offered an optional factory option called the adventure package where you could get a rear locking diff if you got a 2006-2008 model or both a front and rear locking diff if you got a 2009 to 2010 model. Using locking diffs is very effective because it ensures that both of the wheels on an axle are spinning even if one has a lot of traction and the other is up in the air. Most of the time H3 owners will just use their lockers if they have an adventure package model or if they put an aftermarket locker in themselves and then they don’t worry about doing the BTM method. However, if you have an H3 with no lockers or only a rear locker, some will try using the BTM method if they encounter a tricky obstacle that they can’t get up. This is often referred to as “The poor man’s locker”. From what I know, this method could give you more throttle control and less spinning and chirping of tires. I think the best use case for this BTM method on the H3 is when you are climbing up a steep hill on the H3 without having a front locker. One weak point on the H3 is the front CV axles. They are known for breaking when a lot of stress is applied to them, as you can see from this video with the Red H3 breaking a CV. If you are trying to climb up a steep hill with a front open diff, one of the wheels is lifted up off the ground in the air due to flex/articulation, it will start spinning fast. If that fast spinning wheel hits the ground hard and comes to a sudden stop because you have a lot of traction (say a rocky surface instead of mud), that could cause the CV to break. So using BTM in this case can help you to slow down that fast front spinning wheel and save your CV from breaking. Personally I haven’t really used BTM before since I was am able to use my rear locker on my H3 Alpha with the Adventure Package. I hope this helps and let me know if you got more questions!

I have another question about my 2006 H3... Is there any way to open the rear door from the inside ? If not.... that's ridiculous ! Thanks in advance !
Unfortunately there is not. Since it is not an enclosed space, like a car trunk, it wasn't required by law to have an emergency handle release from the inside.

@@Snailmailtrucker Glad you were able to get it to work! Yeah technically you can open it from the inside, but that's just because there is enough room to get your hands on the mechanism. Lol unfortunately there isn't an emergency release pull cord or anything to make it easily open. Good look with your setup!
@@Snailmailtrucker Now that you found the rod you can set up a pull cord pretty easily. Use a wire rope clamp and drill a hole above where you want to have a pull. Get your length right and whatever material figured out. String, rope or even a small rod attached and up out the hole. Use a grommet to neaten it and top how ya like it. I have made a few on rides.
Question, I found two types of smokes side makers. One is a led turn signal and the other is just a smoked plastic lens. I picked up the lens because I not the best at wiring. Do you know if I have to buy different bulbs?
If you bought the LED version, you do not need to buy anything. The side marker will have a harness inside of it that you plug into the side marker socket. If you bought a clear/smoked side marker that does not have LEDs embedded into it, you will need a new bulb. The bulb you will need is an Amber 194 bulb. The stock 194 bulb in the H3 is white and uses the Amber side marker to get an amber color. Since you are using clear/smoked lens you will need a 194 amber colored bulb in order to get an amber color to maintain legality.
Glad your clanking sound stopped. I have a H2 hummer with a clanking sound, that I need to tow. Does anybody know of a good shop in the Knoxville area? I was going to take it to the Buick GMC dealer in Knox but was wondering if someone else knows of someone. I’m told it might be a loose bolt on the flywheel or torque converter. :(
I subsribed to your channel. I also have an H2 Hummer. Pretty much factory setup. Can you suggest the best tie rod to upgrade my factory OEM? I knew of this issue and it does concern me when I go off roading.
Some made it others didn't. I would make sure next time. Everyone has a new set of AT tires. Most seem like tires tread were half life. Meaning no tread and time to replace. Once you all got to the 1 mile trail. I was able to see tires and yeah. If most had new AT tires. It would not have been so hard. Man that makes me want to get the 16in tire rode. I think they come normally 14in for h3. I think I read that somewhere. The 16 is said to be thinker and won't break as easily. But wow this is cool.
Yeah for sure mud tires would be beneficial. I myself have Toyo Open Country M/T tires on my H3. Instead of getting the OEM 16mm tire rods, I would actually reccomend getting the Outfitter Design Hummer H3 Heavy Duty Tire Rods. They are much beefier as they are 1in thick (25.4mm). I have had these tire rods on my H3 for about 5 years now and love them. I haven’t had any trouble on any of the offroad trails that I have went on. Thanks for watching! www.outfitterdesign.com/hummer-h3-tie-rod-kit.html
@@4lowmode thanks. But I thought for 06 to I want to say 08. OEM was 14 and not 16. But either way I'll take the outfitter. ✊🏿✊🏿💪🏿💪🏿👏🏿👏🏿. Thanks for that I appreciate. Yeah I like toya open country AT. They would have dominated those rocks. I'm a big fan of toya tires.
Thanks for the feedback. I am trying to balance it making these videos. When doing technical obstacles, I don't like to have music because you definitely want to hear the vehicles. In other instances I think it adds to the overall production value and cuts out the awkward silence when nobody is talking. I think for the trail riding sequences it helps.
@@4lowmode I definitely understand breaking up awkward silence. I'm just picky 😅. Maybe have it toned down where you can still hear the wind, engine, and tires. It really is a good video though and beautiful trails. I'm not an expert or anything so I hope you didn't take my criticism the wrong way
If you want to DM on instagram @acer4lo or Facebook (Acer Miller) I can take a look at it and tell you what options and factory accessories it has. But anyway I would watch my video on the H3 adventure package on youtube if you haven't already. Also I would test all the 4x4 modes and locker(s) on it. Also I would bring a car scanner tool to see if there is any check engine lights.
I'll keep my 2005 rubicon. don't get me wrong, but these things are to big and heavy for the trails I go on. I got 35's with a 3 inch lift and can go almost anywhere.
TJs are nice, but I kinda Hummers because they are unique and less common to see. The thing about Jeeps is that there is always going to be someone out there that has a Jeep that can out-spend, out-wheel, and out-build you since there is so many of them out there.
Hello 👋 Is it possible to put a h3 5 cylinders 09-10 front differential to a H3t alpha ? I have a hummer H3T alpha 2010 and my front differential doesn’t work any more, what can I do to fix my problem? I tried on looking for all the parts of the differential and fix it but I couldn’t find all of them , and I was looking to put a front differential from a H3 5 cylinders but i don’t know if that’s possible, what can I do in my case?
You can technically put a front diff in from a I5 H3 into your Alpha, but the I5 H3 has a different gear ratio than the Alpha. The I5 H3 comes with a 4.56 gear ratio while the Alpha comes with a 4.10 gear ratio. So you would either need to change front diff ring and pinion to have 4.10 gears or you could change the rear diff to have 4.56 gears. If you want to run larger size tires and go offroad I would reccomend you change the rear to a 4.56 gear ratio. Whatever you do, you need to make sure you are running the same gear ratio in both diffs. Also I would only reccomend you run a 2009 to 2010 I5 H3 front diff because they are made from cast iron. The I5 H3 came with an aluminum diff from 2006-2008 and it is weaker. All Alphas came with cast iron differentials. You can tell the difference between the two pretty easily. The aluminum one will be a grey color and the cast iron one will be a black color.
at 21:43 the problem is the guys standing off to the side not giving the driver any room. if they were in front and not on the outside he makes it easy.
Great video 👍question for you I noticed you have a real vented hood louver on your H3 have you had any issues with it with rain/dirt etc going to your engine?
I haven't had a problem with rain ruining anything in the engine bay. The engine bay really isn't made to be water sealed, so getting mud or water in there doesn't really hurt anything. If you are going through some deep water or mud you get mud and water in there irregardless if you have the real hood louver or not. But yeah the hood louver is an essential upgrade for me because it helps to expell hot air from the engine bay. My H3 gets pretty hot when wheeling so it is very nice to have. Check out Runcool Hood Louvers. They are the ones who make them for the H3.
@@4lowmode Thank you for replying and great that makes sense I been wanting to upgrade my hood louver for a while now I'll look into runcool hood louver 🙏
Great video! Bad luck for the newbies lol Do you know if the rancho lift kits are still available or if they still produce them for the H3's? I can’t find them anywhere...
Rancho discontinued them for the H3 in 2016, so they are hard to come by. I got my Rancho lift kit by literally buying an H3 that already had it installed.
All the difference some front lockers would have made up in some of those situations. Oh only if i had unlimited funds, the off-road magical piece that i would create…oofffff... Doesnt hurt to dream :] happy offroading all, and be safe
Should choose some better lines as well as the momentum. Instead of everyone beating themselves up in the same spot, the spotter should have them choose a different line. Instead of going right, go left where there’s less rocks, maybe?
Nope there were some i5s! There were 6 H3s total, 3 of them were i5s (white, maroon, and blaze orange) and 3 of them were Alphas (dark grey, light grey, and black). The white H3 that was with us was basically stock. He just had 33in all terrain tires and also he did not have the adventure package, so no lockers. So your H3 should totally be able to do it if you want to come to a future event!
@@4lowmode Huh! Gotta keep that in mind! Sadly I'm up in Soviet Canuckistan (Canada) so I'm kinda stuck where I'm at right now. Also, silly question, but know any good lift kits for the H3? I know the Rough Country one has been discontinued, but think there's anything else out there that'd work similar? Keep up the awesome work! I'm about to do a Lased Design LED swap on my truck in a week or two! Side note: Awesome footage, glad you guys had a good time, did you ever figure out what was clicking/clunking on your truck by the way?
@@DraccoKnightblade Aw dang that's a far distance. In terms of lift kits, there aren't too many good options, but there are a few. You can do a front torsion bar crank. There is a bunch of videos on youtube on that topics. Also you can do a body lift to your H3. I have a video on my channel on how to do that. Also you can do a rear leaf spring extend shackle lift which is very easy. Lol I haven't figured out what that sound was on my H3 but it did stop when I got back. I still need to get my H3 up on the lift to investigate. But yeah as of now, I am not sure what it is.
@@4lowmode Keep us posted with what was going on with your truck eh? I'm interested to know if those heavier connecting rods or CV axles were the culprit, as I'm looking to upgrade mine to those ones you've mentioned before in other comments. And thanks! I planned on doing a body lift and have watched basically every video you've done on the H3's so far. So few and far between -good- videos on how to do things with this vehicle! Probably going to end up doing a torsion key replacement and lift, and the rear shackle before putting 35"s on. Question, did you have to retune your shift positions or anything when you put larger tires on yours? Or is yours the Alpha and didn't need that sort of thing like the I-5 did (or so I hear.)
So the funny thing I am looking to buy a Hummer and I saw one in camo but when they took that photo from the air it look like the same truck I saw for sale.

I only have 2 inch lift and use Toyo open country AT3 tires but it goes off road pretty well. The Quadra Drive 2 system is really good in that year with limited slip front and rear that can go to 100% lock automatically as needed. I may be able to keep up with the group, is the story I’m telling myself.

Awesome video very cool seeing such big rigs on windrock
Thanks for watching!
So cool love my h3 she dose much more then she should do but I take care of the girl for she good to me
Good to hear! Thanks for watching!
Je suis vraiment passionné par les hummer h2 ça fait 6 ans que je possède une de couleur jaune
We need video about how to repace front panel

@@Quis85 I think the 14mm tires only came on the 2006 models. After that, from 2007 to 2010, I believe they used the 16mm.
Cool video. Just wish there was less music. I like to actually hear the vehicles and everything even on the non offroading parts
I'm not an expert or anything so I hope you didn't take my criticism the wrong way
I found an H3 adventure package. Probably picking it up in a 3 days. Any advice?
If you want to DM on instagram @acer4lo or Facebook (Acer Miller) I can take a look at it and tell you what options and factory accessories it has. But anyway I would watch my video on the H3 adventure package on youtube if you haven't already. Also I would test all the 4x4 modes and locker(s) on it. Also I would bring a car scanner tool to see if there is any check engine lights.
@@4lowmode good video. Informative. Only one real question, any regrets on buying it?
@@warpigprepper7202 On buying an H3 in general?
@@4lowmode yea
buy a jeep instead
What was the clunking noise?????
Great content
12:18 looks like that h2 added front lockers
I'll keep my 2005 rubicon. don't get me wrong, but these things are to big and heavy for the trails I go on. I got 35's with a 3 inch lift and can go almost anywhere.
TJs are nice, but I kinda Hummers because they are unique and less common to see. The thing about Jeeps is that there is always going to be someone out there that has a Jeep that can out-spend, out-wheel, and out-build you since there is so many of them out there.
H2 Hummer my dream car...
so tie rods are a terror with h2s
I didn’t see anybody let air out of their tires!?
Hello 👋
Is it possible to put a h3 5 cylinders 09-10 front differential to a H3t alpha ?
Shawn’s h3 sounded like it was running terrible at the end of the video in that rock crawl
Yep it did because it had a bad timing chain.
I love hummers.I dunno why so Americans complained but it such a cool vehicle
at 21:43 the problem is the guys standing off to the side not giving the driver any room. if they were in front and not on the outside he makes it easy.
This is mostly a H2 fan club, a damn I spent all this money to be cool, now it’s not cool anymore. Trying so hard
@@jasenx8560 Yep! I love mine. There is a great UA-cam video on how to install it onto the H3 by NewRoad Adventures on UA-cam.
@@4lowmode Rancho found 10 plus kits in there warehouse about a year ago . They all sold .
I would NEVER go off-road without Kryptonite tierods.
They are a must. Breaking a tie rod is like the Achilles' heel on a H2 or H3 lol
I remember when wheelin' was tough now people need a spotter to get over a Walmart speedhump
The importance of momentum cannot be overstated. As fast as necessary as slow as possible. Lot of amateurs but they are getting experience.
Awesome video as usual……..didn’t you guys do a badlands trip before this too? Is there gonna be a video for that?
Um we might have, but first I gotta get to the bottom of does the ECP aluminum radiator fit in the H3 with the stock fan and fan shroud.
Blind leading the Blind.
I want to become a member of the hummer club! I have a silver ice 09
All the difference some front lockers would have made up in some of those situations. Oh only if i had unlimited funds, the off-road magical piece that i would create…oofffff... Doesnt hurt to dream :] happy offroading all, and be safe
Thanks for watching!
Should choose some better lines as well as the momentum. Instead of everyone beating themselves up in the same spot, the spotter should have them choose a different line. Instead of going right, go left where there’s less rocks, maybe?
Why is it that the h1 is the only one riding it's breaks up the hill 😅😅😅😂😂
It's the diffs,? Or something else?
guessing all of the H3's that were there were Alphas? I don't see the I5 doing this and I own an I5, H3!
Man I want an h2 so bad, but I can’t sacrifice the interior space of my obs suburban. I’m 6’6 and like to sleep comfortably.
You just have to lighten the weight of the hummer and it becomes the best off road TT.
Sounds like u had differential issues goin
So the funny thing I am looking to buy a Hummer and I saw one in camo but when they took that photo from the air it look like the same truck I saw for sale.
00:45 "So, we left the hotel around 08:00am in the morning"!?!?!? As opposed to 08:00am in the evening???? If you say 08:00 am, it AUTOMATICALLY indicates it's MORNING!!!
lol
Hi Do you need some great lighting for your car to help you better driving, off-road. We're the pro auto lighting manufacturer for nearly 20 year and we're looking for sponsorship!
I just love everything i see, just if GM put a turbodiesel into the H3 back in the day, it will be a car to consider here in spain, where gasoline is 1.60/litre (1gal = 3,7 litre, so 1 gal = 7 $) why europe why???? I just love this things toó much, but i'm so poor 😂😂😂
Tie rod seems to be the weakest link in hummer trucks
Who would've though 21+" rims and mall crawler tires would be crap off-road......Lockers before trinkets guys
That was cool. Wish I could join one of these trips.
The screetching lunatic at 5.45 of the video, Someone throw a broken tie rod at it. My god. My Tj ruby walks threw this without issue.
Can anyone pin the location? Off roading + Rain = Goosebumps & adrenaline
Some of those guys have no wheeling common sense
Some of the drivers were brand new and it was their first time going offroad.
@@4lowmode Well tell him to get a jeep
Especially this girl yelling.....
I have a hummer 🥱
Post some videos, let’s see you do it. 😉
Not sure you should be running an off-road channel, if you are calling a tie rod a "TIRE ROD". 🤯
Yeah man you are a lot cooler than I am. You can get back to your jeeps now.
11:20 Minute that he is the worst driver, he does not want to learn and does not want to lag behind them, such is a problem for the groups
grand cherokee is a grocery getter not an off road rig.
Haha yeah you definitely don't see many of those offroad.
Hello. I have a 2005 jeep grand Cherokee with 5.7 hemi, Quadra Drive 2 with front and rear limited slip and center diff locks in 4 low.
My goodness all the control freaks ruin the fun makes it seem like a chore 😂
My hell most of these H2 drivers need to learn how to drive my hell. One of the most frustrating off road videos to watch so many people who don’t have a freakin clue how to use their vehicle
I love the H3's, but damn...they are SO far away from being a Jeep. SOOOooo far!
I think only the hummer h1 can survive sa difficult obstacle,,,, because the h1 is not heavy,, ,so can climb easily,,,,not like the h2 and h3 its very heavy type suv.,,the body is heavy,
The best Hummer offroad is a H3 with a Solid Axle Swap conversion. That makes extremely capable offroad.
