I believe the Buddha did talk about unconditioned existence. I believe that was the "4 Unanswered questions" pertaining to epistemology posed to the Buddha by his followers. The Buddha did answer like, "This is." and so forth but it seemed nobody could understand and therefore left "unanswered" as in the teachings of the Pali Canon. This latter teachings are usually said for the Arhat training. However, if one looked at the other disciples of the Buddha, especially MahaKasyapa and the Buddha's wife, these two have been with the Buddha for several eons and various rebirths when Buddha was a bodhisattva. MahaKasyapa was said to be about similar to the Buddha's accomplishments, i.e. physically he could even wore the Buddha's clothes and reads the teachings of the Buddha mind to mind when the Buddha held up a flower, MahaKasyapa smiled whereas nobody knew why the Buddha did that. Other than these two, none of the arhats and other bodhisattvas-to-be could not understand when the Buddha talked about unconditioned existence., and in the Pali Canon there is this: 4 Unanswered Questions. Moreover, I believe there is no point for the Buddha to teach what is more than his then disciples can grasped. However, for Yasodhara and MahaKasyapa it was different. I believe they understood, at least a glimpse. In the Mahayana I was trying to find out in Chinese Buddhism, what did they say about the Buddha's 4 Unanswered Questions, according to the Mahayana translation. Dzongsar Jamyang Khyenste Norbu Rinpoche! where are the texts?
