    A horses digestive system is made to have small amounts of food digested constantly. If you can make your horse eat all day long or at least any time he wants to and not just for a short time twice a day. You will have a better chance of never having a horse colic or develop ulcers and bad habits from boredom. You will also cut down on waste ( Horses standing on the food and wind carrying it away. Just a few reasons. There are plenty more

    Nice, I tried that with a net I attached to the troff. My mare tossed that troff all over the place and God knows how, bent it in half.🤭

    Awesome idea, and I like the jaw brand on that horse.

    Sorry I did not get back to you quickly. If you have one of those galvanized feet tubs then all you would need is the grid. It evolves a lot of work with the welder so my husband is selling them for a $100. If you don't have a feed tub you can buy them at a feed store. There are many different sizes. to choose from. Mine was $206 . Hope this helps. Åsa

    It's kind of hard to see, but it looks like a bar with a heart side ways, if so then it would be called either a lazy heart bar, or bar lazy heart. When ever a letter or symbol is on it's side they call it "lazy". Like there use to be a big ranch called The Lazy H, and the brand was a side ways H. Then we use to have a brand in Wyoming, that was an unside down heart with a lazy H underneith it.

    @linustheferret  15 років тому

    Yes that is what it looks like. It is a bar and a heart sideways. Thanks so much for the info. That is very interesting.

    It is what my husband did. He welded a ring around all the sharp edges. Bought the grid at a fencing store and the feeders at the Feed store.

    Oh My God I have no idea. We are in Las Vegas and it has not been something we ever thought about. Great question. I know in Sweden it gets cold enough and they use metal grids as well but it might be in a barn and not out on a field.

  • @linustheferret
    @linustheferret  15 років тому

    I thought that too but I am not so sure anymore. I have never seen anything to prove it and when one strand of hay comes out a few more follows and they hardly ever need to go digging for it. I see grazing horses go at it at when there''s very little to eat and they really dig their noses in the dirt. I think that risk way outweigh the risk of colic and boredom by eating only for a short while every day. Ps we have used them daily for many months already. And no problem so far.

    @NewHorizontbf I am in Las Vegas NV and I bought it at Tiberti fence store. I also saw the same things at a large feed store. I would try those kind of places first. They will most likely have them. This kind had openings that are 2" 4" holes. Good luck

    Love this! SO you just buy a metal trough and then buy the metal grid, cut and weld it to fit, and remove any sharp edges? (Or weld something on the edge to prevent any sharp edges?) Love it!

    @linustheferret  15 років тому

    That is so cool. Do you maybe have a picture ? Isn't it nice on a windy day when other people loose hay all over the place? And the biggest factor of all, the fact that my horse does not wait for food for a good 8 hours a day. That is so insane yet that is the norm for most horses.

    Is the tub heavy enough that nobody knocks it over? How do you keep the grid from coming out (I have a very playful Arab who can't stay out of his water, let alone a feed tub). If the grid can't come out, how do you fill it?

  • @linustheferret
    @linustheferret  13 років тому

    No my husband never got around to making them for sale. I wish I could say yes. Hope you can figure out a way to make them. They do work well. :)

    There is also a good method feeding your animals hay on our channel you should check out. It uses a only a cattle panel and is cheaper. It is called How to save time and money feeding your goats round hay bails, it works for other animals too : )

    @patriotsongs I am so sorry I don't know the name of it. It. It came as either 2inch holes or 2" by 4" , Try to call a feed store and ask. If I remember I will ask at our feed store and get back to you.

    Is this homemade or did you buy it? If so, where? The grate looks bought, having nicely rolled edges and all. If homemade where did you get the materials? Thanks, I'm interested in having something just like this!

    I bought it at a fencing company in Las Vegas called Tiberti. I have also seen it at different feed stores in different cities. I don't know what you would call it but I asked for a metal grid with 2 inch openings. The thing I got was 2"by 4". My husband cut it to fit and then welded a metal rod around the sharp edges.

      2'' x 4'' would work well for small animals like goats or sheep, but horses need to get a proper mouthful every bite. Looks like they would starve with this contraption.

    @farmdoll38 I don't know !!!! I have not seen that. It must be the hay itself maybe. Its kind of funny but I am sure it pisses you off royallyy. Have you tried to put eye bolts in the bottom of the bin and then use bungie cords to hold the grid down on the hay? That might work. If you figure it out be sure to tell us all. :) ( And I stare at my horse all day too we are in the same boat LOL)

    @myponypoppy It's obvious you still have a lot to learn about horse health and care, and that you don't have to pay for your own hay.. It's never "mean" to protect a horse from gluttony (laminitis, colic, etc).and to make sure their feed goes inside them. Good hay; is expensive bedding.

    This is a cruel way to feed your horse!!! Don't do it...!!! Please research the risks to your horses mouth, teeth and gums!!! The have very sensitive noses, lips and gums. Feeding your horses through metal should be illegal...where is your common sense???

  • @linustheferret5as
    @linustheferret5as 8 років тому

    once they are used to eating from a slowfeeder they are not at all angry. 😊And it sure beats standing without food for 20 hours a day when your body tells, you need food. I don't think they accidently would bite the steel but I tell you what happened. My horse got thicker hair on his lips from the rubbing against the metal so I went back to slow feeding hay nets. And the nose is happy again.
