As an old rock/jazz/blues bassist, who uses 66's on a Jazz, I knew the results before I watched. I was interested to see how you presented the info. Bravo for the way you did your sided by side clips. Some of the best work I've seen. Even volume, same riffs, placed finger/slap/plectrum/palm mute clips side by side, no lengthy space between the comparison, straight up. Also appreciate you telling folks right up front where to forward to the sound clips. Cheers.
I like my strings old and dead even for slapping. I never changed the strings on my fist bass. They are on there for about 8 years and I will never swap them. My new bass, that is my main bass gets new strings about ones a year. Getting a good slap setup is difficult, but if done right (all the treble you can possibly get + mid contour) I like the percussive sound of totally dead strings that are slapped hard.
It’s definitely a very subjective choice. I know a lot of players personally who never change their strings (unless they break) who get a great sound. While I tend to change my round wound bass strings every month or two I’m the complete opposite with flat wounds which I only change if I have a string break (which hasn’t happened in the 5 years I’ve had them on my P Bass 😂 ). Thanks for checking out the video 😁👍
I listened through headphones. Not better or worse, just different. Depends what sound you're after. I liked the warmth of the old strings, but I'm not a slapper.
Being a huge squire/entwistle/geddy fan I obviously much prefer the sound of the newer strings, there's more top end presence and another thing this vid fails to really capture is just how much tighter the bottom end is with new strings, much better.
Great playing, and thank you for posting this comparison. Even at 8 months old, the old set still sounded rather good to me. And, there’s nothing quite like the sound of a new set of Swing Bass 66’s. Does your Jazz Bass have DiMarzio Model J pickups? If so, those are one of my favorite sets of aftermarket J-style passive pickups. They have what I consider a Jazz Bass-meets-a-Precision Bass tone.
Thanks 🙂👍 I’ve had a few people ask me if they’re DiMarzios in my jazz recently. They’re actually the original stock pick ups (“Pure Vintage ‘64 jazz bass pickups” according to the fender website) that came in the bass with cheap aftermarket replacement covers.
I’ve got a set of Roto Jazz Bass flats on an old Mexican P bass and they sound great, they’ve been on for about 5 years and I can’t see me changing them till they break 👍
definitive you sound more like studio bass when using old strings//no doubt u are spot on all time but old strings feel like u got much more control on bass//new look like super talented bassist that will be insane but still feel a bit unsecure and mute is not 100 perc in //i feel on funk and pick that stand out more so for finger old new both ok /special when mixed in music but for bass listening special on slapping new strings it felt like you are not as good on muting and string controll that in fact you are

Rolling the tone nob one half or a quarter works nice for new stings I just put a set rotos on Thay sound great like that. Good info thank you
Honestly from what I'm hearing they both sound great.
All the money I’ve spent on new strings for 50 years! Lol. If I had invested that money, I’d have some nice retirement funds!

The old strings sounds best.
I agree with you on your assessment. Finger style defo sounded nicer on the older strings:) 👍
Dude the strings on my bass are about 7 or 8 years old! But I like those roto's
i love the bright zzing of new strings
Old strings sound warmer..deep and vintage. I hate the news

Cool I play punk rock with a pick.. hahaha expensive lifestyle here I come
Gosh I like old strings so much ! 😝
For me the old ones please. Joe Dart has been using the same set of Roto Nickels on his Fender Mexican Jazz Bass for 14-15 yeard

I feel old strings sound better 😅
Pluses to both, but the new had a great warmth
I play with a pick and I can't stand new strings. The deader the better! haha
Cool sound, btw!
Try Roto 100 flats. Definitely less surface noise on new strings and generally longer lasting. I’m never going back to rounds again.
