1st splash art is just a geniality. Its composition, the colors, the perspective, everything. I liked the illumination before it got too dark and the bg very blurry, but I know by storytelling and its functionality as an splash art its better as it is
He’s (seemingly) using the color blocks as a guideline to adjust the facial proportion. If you look closely, at that step the head (specially the two protrusions on the top of the head) is elongated. The yellow and blue color-block step was just to, again, show guidelines for how he wanted the fact to look without messing around with the rendered art
