Just had this for the first time this weekend and enjoyed it very much. A pour was $36 at a restaurant. I had no issues with that price for a pour, and I would pay beyond MSRP but definitely not $700+
Just had a pour of ORVW in Vegas. A buddy bought me the pour thankfully, but my thoughts are completely in agreement with yours. Great if you can find it for $70, but not worth a penny more.
This is the sort of bottle that sits on a shelf at a museum, with a price that is significantly more than it is worth. I've had the 12-year and found it good but not amazing, so I'm not going to go on a wild goose chase for it. I haven't had this one yet. If I see it at a bar for a price that isn't ridiculous, I would like to try it since it seems more promising than the others in the Van Winkle line-up, but I'm not going to hunt for it. I suppose I don't "get" the bourbon craze. I like bourbon, but I've never had one that has blown me away to the point that I would search all over the place for it or spend a thousand dollars for a bottle.
Well said Heather! We’re in the same spot. On this particular one, the proof helps a ton, but it’s still nowhere near worth paying up for in our book.
I couldn't agree more. I love bourbon. I *love* great bourbon... but I'm not a sucker, and I don't try to prove my worth by what bottles I have on my shelf. This craze is *insane,* especially considering the availability of truly incredible juice at reasonable prices. The high end buff trace (and similarly hyped) products' following is mostly a nouveau riche bro fad. No thanks. I'll wait it out without paying exorbitant prices. 😊

It’s a shame that the Weller Antique, also 107 proof, has become so hard to find. A decade ago I could buy a handle for $37 any day of the week and it was one of my everyday pours. I’ve had one of these on my shelf, an end of year gift from my students, for years but haven’t gotten around to opening it.
If you had to say, what’s the most you’d pay for any bottle? Purely for the enjoyment of it, not bc guests will get a kick of it, or its collectible. No hype, purely, on the product?
Josh here. For Erin? $150 max for a special occasion bottle, which would likely only be enjoyed with friends or family. For me, $300-350, again likely only enjoyed with friends or family.
I've had pours of the 10 and 12 and wasn't impressed by either and the last time I tasted the 10 it was almost a drain pour and I could not finish it. If I had the opportunity to purchase at msrp I would do so only to have it to trade for something I would enjoy.

How is this poor man’s pappy? It’s still apart of the Van Winkle lineup. I get it, it’s not 15+ yo…but I thought the title meant a blend like Weller 107 + Weller 12.
We only put retail products into the pool for these Monday videos, not blends, and the title is a play on the fact that the “Pappy” designation isn’t actually applied to any products outside of the 15, 20, and 23 year releases. Thanks for watching. Cheers!

This is to me the best Van Winkle. The 12 is not great the 15 is like sucking on a piece of oak. Haven’t had the others but I imagine they are disappointing as well.

I have only had a pour of old rip 10 year. I would love to try the rest, but I will not pay the price for it. maybe one day i will get lucky, but until then not a chance in hell.
I expected this to be the weller blend. Either way, the van winkle line isnt special.
No blends for these Monday videos. It has to be a retail product. In that sense, and for the times we’ve tried the typical blend (of which we’re not fans), Old Rip is probably the best non-Pappy that’s actually Pappy even though it’s kinda sorta Pappy. 😆
